Our verdict on ArcMutate

ArcMutate is mutation testing software from CloudDev for JVM development teams that want to identify weaknesses in automated test suites. It extends PIT mutation testing with support for Java, Kotlin and Groovy, while Android support is available as a beta feature. The product fits teams working with JUnit 4, JUnit 5, Spring Test, Mockito, MockK or Robolectric, and supports Linux, Windows, macOS and self-hosted deployment.

Its main strength is the depth of its mutation analysis. The feature set includes extended, extreme and chained-call operators, subsumption analysis, mutant exclusions, test statistics and quality gates. Incremental analysis uses history files to avoid repeating unnecessary work, while parallel execution and JUnit 5 acceleration address execution efficiency. Teams can also use Git-based pull-request mutation testing, with surviving-mutant annotations surfaced in GitHub pull requests. Spring and Spring Boot support, Kotlin and Groovy operators, and reactive, predicate and stream-related operators give ArcMutate a wider JVM focus than a tool limited to basic Java mutations.

Pricing is structured around a free plan and paid access. The Base plan costs $8 per user per month, billed monthly, and includes extended operators, subsumption analysis, mutant exclusions, test statistics, Maven and Gradle support. Pro costs $12 per user per month and adds Spring, Kotlin, Git, GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure integrations, incremental analysis and priority support. Startup provides Pro access for eligible startups, while Open Source offers free licenses for open-source projects. ArcMutate is a strong fit for Java-focused teams building mutation checks into CI; teams needing production-ready Android mutation support or a non-JVM focus should look elsewhere.
