Our verdict on Apache TomEE
Apache TomEE is an open-source application server for developers and organizations running enterprise Java applications on their own infrastructure. Built on Apache Tomcat, it adds Jakarta EE 10 application server functionality and is available for self-hosted deployments on Windows and Linux. It fits teams that want a Tomcat-oriented foundation with enterprise Java capabilities rather than a managed application platform.
TomEE’s distribution model is a practical strength. Web Profile, MicroProfile, Plus, and Plume flavors let teams select a server aligned with their application scope, while the MicroProfile flavor adds MicroProfile support. The server also includes configurable containers and resources through properties or XML, remote EJB services, and EJB client support. For applications that require clustered sessions, Tomcat clustering provides session clustering and high-availability configuration. This combination gives Tomcat-focused Java teams a broad set of Jakarta EE deployment options without moving away from an open-source server model.
Deployment and development workflows are another important part of TomEE’s fit. Applications can run inside the launching JVM through embedded TomEE execution, and Maven supports server provisioning, start and stop operations, deployment, and undeployment. These capabilities suit teams that prefer build-tool-driven environments or need a server that can be incorporated into Java application processes. TomEE is less suitable for organizations seeking a managed service, an administration-console-led experience, or a platform centered on broad integrations. Teams choosing it should be comfortable operating self-hosted Java infrastructure and selecting the distribution that matches their Jakarta EE and MicroProfile requirements.
