Our verdict on Apache Ozone
Apache Ozone is open-source distributed object storage for data lakes, AI/ML, cloud-native applications, and big-data environments. It is designed for teams that need to operate storage across clusters using Docker, Kubernetes, bare-metal, or virtual-machine infrastructure. Access is available through an S3-compatible REST API and S3 Gateway, Hadoop-compatible ofs and s3a interfaces, a native Java API, and command-line administration. Its architecture separates metadata management from physical data storage.
Ozone fits environments built around the Hadoop ecosystem and related data platforms. Published integrations include Hive, Spark, Flink, Iceberg, Trino, Impala, Ranger, Knox, Kerberos, Prometheus, Grafana, Oozie, Hue, HBase, and DistCp. Security and governance options include Kerberos authentication, native ACLs, Apache Ranger authorization, volume and bucket quotas, and point-in-time read-only bucket snapshots. The Recon web interface provides monitoring, while replication and erasure coding address different storage-protection needs.
