Our verdict on Apache Impala
Apache Impala is an open-source distributed analytic database for interactive SQL queries across Hadoop ecosystem data. It is designed for data analysts, engineers, and organizations operating large-scale data platforms, with support for BI-style workloads over HDFS, HBase, Amazon S3, and Apache Kudu. Impala runs as a cluster of daemons on Linux and provides access through impala-shell, Hue, JDBC, and ODBC.
Its strongest fit is an existing Hadoop-oriented environment that needs SQL access across shared metadata and varied storage. Hive-compatible SQL and shared Hive Metastore metadata help it work alongside Apache Hive, while support for Parquet, ORC, Avro, text, RCFile, and SequenceFile covers several common file formats. The storage integrations extend across HDFS, HBase, Amazon S3, and Kudu. Apache Ranger adds authorization with table and column privileges, and Kudu support covers updates, deletes, upserts, and continuously arriving data.
Apache Impala is free and open source, but its deployment model places responsibility for running the software on the organization. The platform focus is Linux and self-hosted, so it suits teams already operating cluster infrastructure more than buyers looking for a vendor-hosted SaaS product.
