Our verdict on Ambient CI

Ambient CI is an open-source, self-hosted continuous integration system for building and testing software in isolated virtual machines. It is particularly suited to teams developing Rust projects on Linux that want project code separated from network access during builds. YAML project files define pre-plan, plan, and post-plan actions, while built-in actions cover Rust formatting, linting, documentation, builds, and tests. Custom executable actions can also be included in the project source tree.

Its standout capability is isolation. Project code runs inside a virtual machine without network access, while pre-plan actions can download dependencies before the isolated build. Secrets are exposed only to post-plan virtual machines, which keeps them separate from the main build phase. Persistent dependency and incremental build caches can reduce repeated work, and artifact collection and publication actions support outputs from completed plans. CPU, memory, disk, cache, artifact, and time limits are configurable, giving administrators control over resource use.

Ambient CI is a focused choice rather than a general-purpose hosted CI service. The published setup requirements call for Linux, Intel-based hardware, QEMU, and KVM, and the software is described as alpha-stage, incomplete, and subject to inconvenient changes. Its self-hosted model fits teams that can maintain their own runner environment and value VM isolation, YAML configuration, caching, artifacts, and secret separation. Teams seeking a hosted service, broader platform coverage, or verified pull-request integration should choose an alternative.
