Our verdict on Amazon MemoryDB
Amazon MemoryDB is a fully managed, durable in-memory key-value database for applications that need low-latency reads, fast writes, high throughput, and data durability. It is compatible with Valkey and Redis OSS data structures, commands, APIs, clients, and tools, and supports web and API access. MemoryDB stores data in memory while using a distributed, Multi-AZ transactional log for durability and recovery. It fits teams that want managed Redis or Valkey-compatible infrastructure with clustering, snapshots, failover, and scaling included.
The published plans show two purchasing options. On-demand nodes have no long-term commitments or upfront fees, with charges varying by node type and usage. Reserved nodes use one-year or three-year terms and offer no-upfront, partial-upfront, or all-upfront payment options. There is no free plan. Automatic Amazon S3 snapshots can be retained for up to 35 days, while horizontal and vertical scaling support shards and replicas. Buyers should compare expected node usage and commitment needs before choosing between the two plans.
MemoryDB’s strongest distinction is the combination of Redis and Valkey compatibility with durability, recovery, and data capabilities beyond basic key-value storage. Security features include TLS encryption in transit, AWS KMS encryption at rest, and ACL- and IAM-based authentication and authorization. Native JSON document support and vector search support application patterns involving structured documents and embeddings. Integrations include Amazon VPC, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, SNS, S3, AWS Controllers for Kubernetes, Bedrock, and SageMaker. Choose MemoryDB for durable managed workloads that fit the AWS ecosystem; avoid it when a free plan is required or when TTL is needed in active-active Multi-Region deployments.
