- Versioning, lifecycle rules, webhooks, and cross-region replication

Our verdict on Alarik
Alarik is an open-source object storage server that implements the S3 protocol. It is aimed at developers, self-hosters, and small to mid-market teams managing application files, media, backups, logs, and other unstructured data on local or private infrastructure. The browser-based management console, bucket policies, access controls, multipart uploads, range reads, and object versioning cover the core needs of an S3-compatible storage server. Alarik is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license and can run through Docker or native builds on Linux and macOS.
Its ecosystem fit is a clear strength. The S3-compatible API supports AWS SDK, s3cmd, rclone, and other S3-compatible tools, reducing the need for product-specific client workflows. Webhooks with retries can connect storage events to surrounding applications, while replication to S3-compatible targets supports cross-region storage patterns. Lifecycle rules and delete markers add useful control for retained and removed object versions. These capabilities make Alarik a practical fit for teams that want familiar S3 interfaces without placing storage entirely in a hosted service.
The tradeoff is operational ownership. Alarik is deployed as self-hosted software, so the team choosing it is responsible for running and maintaining the storage environment. Optional multi-node clustering and Reed-Solomon erasure coding provide a path to more distributed deployments, but they also suit teams prepared to manage infrastructure rather than users seeking a fully managed service. Support is provided through documentation. Choose Alarik when open-source licensing, private deployment, S3 compatibility, and storage controls matter; choose another option when hosted operations are the priority.
