Our verdict on ACRA

ACRA is an open-source Android library that developers embed in applications to capture exceptions and crash reports. It gathers contextual device, application, configuration, logcat, and stack-trace information, making it suitable for Android projects that need control over report contents and delivery. The Apache-2.0 license supports use by solo developers and teams across company sizes, while deployment is centered on Android applications rather than web or desktop software.

Its strongest capability is configurable report collection. Developers can add custom variables and debug traces, choose dialog, notification, toast, or silent reporting interactions, and send reports through HTTP, email, or custom implementations. ACRA can also submit reports when an application has not crashed, and a stack-trace hash helps identify repeated traces. When connectivity is unavailable, reports are queued and sent after a later restart. Optional report limiting and scheduling plugins provide additional control over collection behavior.

ACRA is a client library rather than a complete analysis service, so teams must connect it to a report receiver and backend for storage and analysis. Self-hosted receiver scripts and multiple backend options support developer-operated deployments, while hosted backends can also be used. This approach suits teams that want customizable Android reporting and are prepared to manage or select the receiving system. Teams needing cross-platform coverage, built-in integrations, or an all-in-one crash analysis product should consider an alternative. Documentation and community channels provide the listed support routes.
