Our verdict on 86Box

86Box is a low-level x86 emulator for operating systems and software designed for IBM PC systems and compatibles from 1981 through PCI-era designs. It is suited to users preserving, studying, or running older PC environments, including MS-DOS, older Windows versions, OS/2, Linux distributions, BeOS, and NEXTSTEP. The project runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS hosts and is distributed under the GNU General Public License version 2 or later.

Its main strength is hardware-level configurability. Virtual machines can include emulated processors, video adapters, sound cards, network adapters, storage controllers, SCSI peripherals, and other components. Multiple machines can be managed through the built-in manager, while local networking connects 86Box machines and hosts on the same network. MIDI output can use the host, FluidSynth, or emulated Roland synthesizers. OpenGL shader effects and configurable shader parameters add display customization without changing the emulator's narrow focus on vintage PC hardware.

The trade-off is that setup depends on obtaining the required ROM dumps, including system BIOS files. That requirement makes 86Box better suited to technically confident users who want detailed control over period hardware configurations than to anyone seeking an immediate, simplified way to run legacy software. Its desktop coverage is clear and broad across Windows, Linux, and macOS, but its purpose remains specific: IBM PC-compatible systems from early x86 machines through Pentium-era designs. Choose 86Box for configurable vintage PC emulation and multi-machine networking; choose a different type of emulator for consoles, mobile devices, or less hardware-specific use cases.
