If Probably Stolen crashes, opens to a black screen, or returns to the Steam Play button, start with a restart and Steam’s file-integrity check, then compare your PC with the game’s listed minimum requirements. The right next step depends on when the failure occurs and whether Windows or Steam shows a specific error. Use a simple before-and-after record as you work through the list: what you saw, what you changed, and whether the next launch behaved differently. Make one change at a time where practical. If several settings, programs, and files are changed together, it becomes much harder to tell which observation mattered. If the game does open after a step, note whether it reaches the menu, loads a save, or fails later; “it launched” does not necessarily mean a sleep-transition or save issue has also been resolved.

- The screen stays black and does not recover: Return to the launch checklist rather than waiting indefinitely based on the demo note. Record how long it remains black, whether the game window responds, and whether the issue happens before or after the menu.

These cases are easy to conflate because they can all look like a dark display at first glance. Ask whether the game window has appeared, whether any menu or scene is visible, whether the rest of the display is black or only the unused margins, and whether the game responds after the transition. Do not delete your save folder as a general troubleshooting step. Keep a separate backup of the original save before experimenting, and test a new game separately. If the new game works but a transferred save does not, that comparison gives you useful information without sacrificing the original progress.
