Printer accessories add capacity, handle specific media, automate two-sided printing, organize finished jobs, or replace worn parts. You only need one when it solves a problem your printer does not already solve—and it must be approved for your exact printer model. Check the complete model name and the manufacturer’s accessory part number before buying.
What printer accessories do
“Printer accessory” can mean optional hardware, a connection item, a recurring supply, or a service part. These categories do different jobs, so start by identifying the task you need to solve.
Paper trays and feeders
An additional tray or feeder increases the amount of paper the printer can hold. Depending on the printer and accessory, it may also let you keep different sizes or types of paper loaded at once, reducing reloads and paper swaps.
Capacity and media support are model-specific. For example, HP lists optional 500-sheet and 1,500-sheet feeders, as well as a custom-media cassette for A6 paper, for its LaserJet Enterprise 600 M601/M602/M603 family. Those specifications do not establish compatibility with other printers. HP’s M601/M602/M603 accessory list describes the options for that family.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Duplexers
A duplexer enables automatic printing on both sides of a sheet, but only on a printer designed to accept that assembly. Before buying one, check whether automatic duplexing is already built in; if it is, an add-on is unnecessary. HP documents model-specific duplexers and automatic duplex assemblies in its M601/M602/M603 accessory list and another printer family’s documentation.
Envelope and small-media feeders
A dedicated feeder can make frequent envelope or small-media jobs easier, but it is not a universal printer feature. HP lists a feeder that holds up to 75 envelopes for named LaserJet families. A Lexmark guide describes a small-media feeder for envelopes, 10 × 15 cm (4 × 6 in.) photo paper, and other small cards. These are examples for particular models, not compatibility promises for printers generally. See the relevant HP accessory list or Lexmark user guide.
For occasional use, a printer’s standard multipurpose feed path may be sufficient. Check the manual for your exact model to learn which media and loading methods it supports. HP’s model documentation is one example of model-specific guidance.
Output stackers, mailboxes, and finishers
These accessories handle pages after printing. A stacker adds output capacity; a mailbox can separate jobs into bins; and a finisher may automate tasks such as stapling. They are most relevant when an office needs to sort or finish substantial output without doing everything by hand.

For its M601/M602/M603 family, HP lists a 500-sheet stacker, a five-bin mailbox, and a stapler/stacker that staples up to 15 sheets. Those figures apply to the named family, not to printers as a class. See HP’s accessory list.
Automatic document feeders
An automatic document feeder (ADF) feeds multiple-page originals into a compatible multifunction printer for scanning, copying, or faxing. It is a document-handling feature, not an add-on that every print-only device can accept. Confirm the capabilities of the specific multifunction model in its manufacturer documentation.
Connectivity accessories and cables
A cable or print-server accessory is useful only when it fits the printer’s ports and the way you intend to connect it. First check whether the printer already has the required USB, Ethernet, or wireless connection and whether a suitable cable came with it. An older HP printer family’s list includes a specific USB cable and print-server device, illustrating that these options are model-dependent; see HP’s M601/M602/M603 accessory list.
Consumables and replacement parts
Ink and toner cartridges are recurring supplies. Drums, feed rollers, fusers, transfer rollers, and maintenance kits are service parts for particular printer designs and usage requirements. They are not universal upgrades: identify the exact item and part number in the documentation for your printer before ordering.

Some manufacturer parts lists show supplies and service components by printer family and part number, such as OKI’s B513dn accessories page. Its listed capacities and service lives apply to those listed items and that printer—not to other models.
Paper and specialty media
Paper is essential, but supported sizes, weights, and types vary by printer and by tray. Manuals may document envelopes, photo paper, or cards for a particular model; do not assume that another printer, tray, or feeder supports the same media. Check both the printer manual and the specifications for the tray you plan to use. The Lexmark small-media guide illustrates how specific the supported-media details can be.
Which accessories are worth buying?
Choose based on a recurring task or a clear limitation, not simply because an accessory is available for your printer.
You reload paper often or switch paper types
Consider an extra tray or feeder if the printer supports one and its capacity or media separation would save time. Verify the supported paper sizes, media types, capacity, and allowed tray combinations in the printer documentation; adding a tray can affect which configurations are supported. Manufacturer examples include the HP M601/M602/M603 options and another HP family’s documentation.

You need automatic two-sided printing
Check the printer’s specifications first. If automatic duplexing is built in, you do not need a separate duplexer. If it is absent, buy an add-on only if the manufacturer lists the exact duplexer for your model. See HP’s model-specific accessory list and family documentation.
You print envelopes or small media frequently
Look for a compatible dedicated feeder if your printer’s manufacturer offers one. For occasional jobs, the multipurpose feed may be enough; check the manual to confirm the supported media and loading procedure. HP’s accessory list and Lexmark’s small-media feeder guide show why support must be checked by model.
You manage high-volume office output
A stacker, mailbox, or finisher can reduce manual handling when jobs need more output capacity, separation, or stapling. Check the printer’s supported configurations and the accessory’s specific function before buying; these specialized add-ons are not interchangeable across models. HP’s M601/M602/M603 list gives examples for that printer family.
You have a connection problem
Match any proposed cable or print-server accessory to the printer’s available ports and your network setup. If built-in Ethernet or Wi-Fi meets your needs, an additional connection device may not be necessary. Check the model’s port and network details before ordering; HP’s older family list illustrates model-specific connectivity options.

You see print defects or a maintenance alert
Use the printer’s documentation or on-device guidance to identify the service part required. A maintenance kit may include components such as a fuser and feed rollers, but kit contents and requirements vary by printer family. Match both the part number and any model variant. HP’s accessory list, family documentation, and OKI B513dn parts page provide model-specific examples.
You print occasionally
For routine printing, the main relevant purchases are usually supported paper and the correct replacement ink or toner. Optional hardware is worthwhile only if you have a specific need it addresses. Manufacturer lists identify supplies by printer and part number, as shown in HP’s list and OKI’s B513dn page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check compatibility before ordering
- Record the complete printer model. Include the full model name and any regional variant shown on the printer or in its settings.
- Find the manufacturer’s accessory or supplies list. Use the page or manual for that exact model rather than relying on a listing that names only a broad brand or product family.
- Look for a built-in version of the feature. Check duplex printing, network connectivity, and existing paper capacity so you do not buy a function you already have.
- Confirm the accessory’s specifications. For trays and feeders, check supported media sizes and types, capacity, and supported configurations. For cables, check connector and interface. For finishers, confirm the function and supported printer setup.
- Match the manufacturer part number. For cartridges and service parts, use the exact code. Similar-looking parts can differ by printer family or voltage variant; consult the HP accessory list, HP family documentation, or OKI’s model-specific list as applicable.
- Check current availability. Product lists can change. HP notes that ordering information and availability may change on its M601/M602/M603 accessory page, so confirm current details with the manufacturer or seller before purchasing.
What to compare when choosing between options
When your printer supports more than one solution, compare the factors that affect whether it will work for your job and setup:
Quick Recap
- Function: Does it add capacity, handle a particular media type, automate duplexing, connect the printer, or finish output?
- Compatibility: Is the exact printer model and configuration explicitly listed?
- Capacity and media: What quantity, paper sizes, or media types does the manufacturer specify for that accessory?
- Existing features: Does the printer already provide the same function?
- Setup and upkeep: Does the item need installation, configuration, or periodic replacement?
- Total cost: Compare the current price and any additional parts or supplies needed for your setup. Manufacturer specifications establish functions and capacities, but the cited documentation does not establish a current, cross-product price comparison.
