In Windows 11, “primary monitor” and “main display” refer to the same role: the display you designate as the main one in Settings. That setting is separate from arranging screens, choosing whether to extend or duplicate them, and deciding where taskbars appear. To change it, open Settings > System > Display, select the display you want, expand Multiple displays, and choose the main-display option. Its exact wording or availability can vary by Windows build.

What changing the main display does—and what it does not

Setting a display as the main display assigns it that role in Windows. Microsoft’s current multi-monitor guidance confirms where to select a display and find the main-display control, but does not specify every shell or app behavior affected by the setting. In particular, it does not establish that every app window, desktop icon, or notification will move to the selected screen.

Keep three separate choices in mind:

  • Main-display role: which connected display is designated as main.
  • Projection mode: whether Windows uses one screen, duplicates content, extends the desktop, or uses a second screen only.
  • Taskbar behavior: whether the taskbar appears on multiple displays and how app buttons appear on those taskbars.

Microsoft’s multi-monitor support guide covers the display-selection, arrangement, and projection workflows.

How to choose the main display

  1. Connect the displays. Open Settings > System > Display and confirm Windows detects each screen. If a screen is missing, expand Multiple displays and select Detect.
  2. Select Identify. Windows shows a number on each physical screen. Match those numbers to the display tiles in Settings.
  3. Select the tile for the screen you want to designate as main.
  4. Expand Multiple displays and select the option to make the selected display the main display. The precise label or control may differ by Windows 11 build.

Use this setting when you want to change which connected screen has the main-display role—not when you want to change which screens show content or how the screens line up.

Arrange displays separately so the pointer moves correctly

The display numbers identify screens; their tile positions determine how Windows models their physical layout. If your left-hand monitor is shown to the right of the other tile, the pointer may cross between screens in an unexpected direction.

  1. In Settings > System > Display, select Identify to confirm which tile belongs to each screen.
  2. Drag the display tiles to match the screens’ physical positions, such as side by side or with one screen above the other.
  3. Select Apply.

This changes the arrangement, not which display is designated as main.

Projection choice What it does
PC screen only Uses the PC screen only.
Duplicate Shows the same content on each display.
Extend Extends the desktop across displays so items can be moved between them.
Second screen only Uses the second screen only.

Microsoft describes these choices in its Windows multiple-monitor guide. Choose a projection mode based on which screens should show content; changing the main-display role does not select a projection mode.

Configure taskbars independently

If your goal is to show taskbars on more than one display or control which app buttons appear on them, change the taskbar settings rather than relying on the main-display setting. Windows provides Show my taskbar on all displays and controls for combining buttons on other taskbars. The available taskbar behavior can distinguish the primary display from the display containing a window.

Microsoft documents these multi-display taskbar controls in its Windows taskbar settings guide and taskbar configuration documentation. These controls address taskbar visibility and buttons; they do not establish a setting for moving the taskbar to another screen edge.

What happens when a monitor is disconnected or a laptop is undocked?

Disconnecting a display is a separate event from changing the main-display selection. Microsoft says that when a computer is undocked, windows on its external monitor are minimized, and when it is docked again, Windows restores them to their previous positions. Display settings also include options to remember window locations based on monitor connection and to minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected. See Microsoft’s multi-monitor support guide.
