Presence sensors are better when an automation must know that someone remains in a room; motion sensors are better when a brief movement event is all that matters. A motion sensor can turn on a hallway light when you walk past, but it may report “clear” after you sit at a desk or fall asleep. A presence sensor, usually using 60GHz millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar, can continue reporting occupancy from tiny movements such as breathing or a small posture shift.

For many homes, the most dependable design is hybrid: use PIR motion for an immediate trigger and mmWave presence to keep the room occupied until it is genuinely empty. The right choice depends on the room, power source, privacy expectations, controller, and how much calibration you are willing to do.

Motion is an event; presence is a state

What a motion sensor reports

A motion sensor answers a short-term question: Did something move through this area? Most residential models use passive infrared (PIR), which notices changes in infrared radiation as a warm body crosses its detection zones. Some products also use ultrasonic or microwave sensing. A PIR unit is excellent at detecting a person entering a hallway, crossing a doorway, or approaching a camera zone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its output is normally an event followed by a timeout. After detecting movement, the sensor reports motion for a configured period; if no new movement crosses its zones, the room becomes “clear.” That behavior is efficient for lighting and security triggers, but it does not prove that everybody has left.

What a presence sensor reports

A presence sensor answers a different question: Is somebody still here? MmWave radar analyzes reflections to detect very small movements, including breathing and subtle body shifts. It can therefore maintain an occupied state while a person is reading, working at a desk, watching television, or sleeping.

Manufacturers use different state names and timeout logic, so “presence” is not an industry-wide accuracy guarantee. It is an occupancy-oriented signal that must still be installed and calibrated correctly. Walls, furniture, moving curtains, fans, pets, and reflections can affect the result.

Aqara summarized the distinction in 2025: “A presence sensor detects very subtle human presence, including small movements like breathing, whereas a motion sensor detects larger movements, like someone walking.”

Why lights switch off while you are sitting still

A PIR light automation often has this sequence: motion detected, light on, countdown starts, no large movement, countdown expires, light off. Waving an arm may restart the timer, but the underlying problem remains. Replacing the PIR with a presence sensor, or adding presence as a second condition, allows the automation to distinguish “no recent motion” from “nobody is in the room.”

How the sensing technologies differ

PIR: simple and efficient

PIR sensors divide their view into zones and detect changes between those zones. They generally need a moving heat source, which makes them predictable for people walking across the field of view. They use little power and are commonly battery-operated. Detection can be weaker when a person walks directly toward the sensor, sits outside the active zones, or is masked by furniture.

MmWave radar: sensitive to small movement

MmWave devices transmit radar signals and interpret their reflections. They can detect a stationary person’s minute movements and, on advanced models, track more than one target or divide a room into software-defined zones. Continuous radar processing usually requires more power than a basic PIR circuit, so many mmWave products use mains power. Battery-powered hybrids are emerging, but their quoted runtime depends on reporting intervals and other laboratory assumptions.

Ultrasonic and microwave motion sensing

Some motion products use ultrasonic or lower-frequency microwave techniques rather than PIR. These can detect movement without relying on a temperature contrast, but behavior varies by model. Check the manufacturer’s specified range, mounting restrictions, and sensitivity controls instead of assuming that every non-PIR device behaves like an mmWave presence sensor.

Presence versus motion: practical trade-offs

Decision axis Presence sensor, often mmWave Motion sensor, often PIR
Automation question “Is somebody still here?” “Did somebody move through this area?”
Best locations Bedrooms, offices, living rooms, and desk or sofa zones Hallways, entrances, driveways, and simple security triggers
Stillness Can detect subtle movement and maintain occupancy May time out when a person remains still
Power Often continuous power; battery hybrids are emerging Frequently battery-powered
Setup More placement and calibration sensitivity; zones may require a hub or app Simpler placement and lower configuration burden
Privacy Radar-based products can avoid cameras PIR also avoids cameras
Typical trade-off Better occupancy continuity, with higher cost and power needs Lower power and simpler deployment, with less reliable still-occupant detection

Aqara’s category guidance lists presence detection up to 8 meters and motion detection typically 4–7 meters. Treat those figures as manufacturer guidance, not universal limits: field of view, mounting height, firmware, room geometry, and the exact model change the usable area.

Choose by room and automation goal

Hallways, stairs, and entrances

Use a PIR motion sensor when the objective is to start a timer as someone passes. A wide viewing angle reduces blind spots, and battery operation keeps installation simple. Presence sensing is usually unnecessary unless the area is also used as a waiting or seating space.

Home office or desk

Choose presence sensing if lights, ventilation, or climate control must stay active while you work without moving. Mount the sensor so the desk and chair are inside its intended zone, then tune sensitivity and timeout to prevent detection of movement through an adjacent doorway.

Living room and television area

MmWave presence is useful when occupants sit quietly for long periods. A PIR can still provide the quickest “room entered” trigger, while presence prevents the lights from switching off during a film. If the sensor supports zones, define the sofa and television area separately from the doorway.

Bedroom

Presence detection can keep nighttime lighting, climate, or safety automations active while someone is sleeping. Avoid aiming a highly sensitive sensor through a wall into another bedroom, and test whether bedding, fans, or a moving curtain produce false occupancy.

Outdoor approaches and security zones

For a driveway, porch, or gate, a motion event is usually the useful signal for a light or camera. Outdoor temperature changes, sunlight, rain, and moving vegetation can make indoor-style presence products unsuitable unless the model is explicitly rated for that environment.

  • Multi-purpose: ideal for use in living areas, entrance areas, passage areas as well as in wet rooms such as basements, toilets, bathrooms.

Designing a hybrid automation

A hybrid arrangement uses each technology for the job it handles best: PIR supplies a fast transition from vacant to active, and mmWave supplies a slower, occupancy-oriented decision. This reduces the delay that can occur when a presence sensor takes time to classify a new target while avoiding the premature shutoff common with PIR-only lighting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Trigger quickly with motion. Turn on the entry light or start the room automation when PIR reports motion.
  2. Confirm or maintain occupancy with presence. Keep the room in an occupied state while mmWave reports a target in the configured zone.
  3. Use a deliberate clear delay. Require both no recent motion and no detected presence for a grace period before switching lights or climate control off.
  4. Separate zones where possible. Exclude a hallway, doorway, or neighboring room from the seated zone so activity outside the room does not hold the room open.
  5. Add manual override and recovery. A wall switch or app control should be able to force the light on or off when sensing is temporarily wrong.

Do not set the clear delay so short that normal classification time turns the lights off. Conversely, an excessively long delay wastes energy after the room is empty. Adjust it to the room’s use: a passageway can clear quickly, while a bedroom or office needs a longer grace period.

Placement and calibration checklist

  1. Map the actual occupied area. Mark the chair, sofa, bed, and doorway where people spend time. Compare that map with the sensor’s stated field of view and maximum range.
  2. Mount at the recommended height and angle. Follow the model’s instructions rather than assuming a ceiling, wall, or shelf position is interchangeable.
  3. Keep the target zone unobstructed. Large furniture, cabinets, partitions, and appliances can block or reflect radar and can create PIR blind spots.
  4. Check adjacent spaces. Test whether the sensor sees through an open doorway or thin partition. If it does, create a zone mask or move the sensor.
  5. Test stillness. Sit, read, and lie down for longer than the planned light timeout. Confirm that the occupancy state remains active.
  6. Test exits. Leave the room, close the door as you normally would, and measure how long the system takes to clear.
  7. Test environmental changes. Run fans, move curtains, and check pets or robot cleaners. Adjust sensitivity, zones, or mounting if those conditions create false positives.
  8. Document the final settings. Record firmware, sensitivity, timeout, zones, and controller pairing so you can restore a known-good configuration after a reset.

Power, privacy, and maintenance

Battery planning

PIR is usually the easier technology for long battery life because it can sleep until an event occurs. MmWave processing and frequent occupancy reports consume more energy. A hybrid battery product may reduce that gap, but quoted life is conditional. For example, the FP300’s stated maximum is up to three years in Zigbee mode and two years in Thread mode under the manufacturer’s laboratory assumptions; treat those as planning figures, not a guarantee.

Install battery sensors where replacement is safe and accessible. A sensor above a stairwell or behind a fixed cabinet may be cheap to install but expensive to maintain. Enable low-battery alerts in the controller and test that an alert is generated before the cell is exhausted.

Camera-free sensing

Both PIR and radar sensors can provide occupancy automation without recording images. That does not mean every implementation is private by default: review what the hub stores, which accounts can access occupancy history, and whether cloud processing is optional. Local processing is preferable when available, especially for bedrooms and work areas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintenance

Keep lenses and sensor openings clean, check that a moved shelf has not entered the field of view, and re-test after furniture changes. Firmware updates can alter sensitivity or expose new zone controls, so recheck automations after updating.

Matter, Thread, Wi-Fi, and hubs: what you actually need

Thread is transport; Matter is the control protocol

Matter is an application-layer protocol that uses IP networking over transports such as Wi-Fi or Thread. Thread is a low-power mesh network, not a synonym for Matter. A product can carry a Thread logo and still require a manufacturer-specific integration rather than offering Matter commissioning.

Home Assistant’s documentation gives the practical warning: “Don’t assume Matter support when you see a Thread logo on a device.” Confirm the Matter logo or the manufacturer’s explicit compatibility statement for the exact model and region.

Border routers and controllers

A Thread sensor needs a Thread-capable border router or equivalent network infrastructure. A Matter device also needs a Matter controller in the ecosystem where you intend to automate it. Depending on the platform, that may be a compatible smart-home hub, speaker, display, or Home Assistant installation. Pairing one device does not automatically make every other controller in the house able to see it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a manufacturer hub is required

Some presence products expose only basic states through Matter, while advanced zoning, AI classification, or multi-target controls remain in the manufacturer’s app and hub. The FP400 is an example: its custom zones are configured in Aqara Home with a compatible hub, and Aqara strongly discourages direct third-party Matter setup without that app because feature availability is limited.

Home Assistant’s Aqara integration lists the P2, FP1E, and FP300 among certified Aqara devices and states that Aqara Matter devices communicate locally. Compatibility still depends on the exact model, firmware, region, and controller. Verify all four before purchase.

Common problems and fixes

Lights turn off while someone is present

  • Replace the PIR-only condition with a presence condition, or add a mmWave sensor to maintain occupancy.
  • Increase the clear delay while the sensor classifies a seated or sleeping person.
  • Reposition the sensor so the chair, bed, or sofa is inside the active zone.
  • Check for a depleted battery or a disconnected hub that is leaving the automation with stale data.

Lights stay on after everyone leaves

  • Inspect the presence zone for a fan, curtain, pet, robot vacuum, or reflection that is being interpreted as a target.
  • Reduce sensitivity or mask the doorway and adjacent room.
  • Run an exit test and set a maximum occupancy hold or fallback shutoff appropriate to the room.

Motion is detected only when walking sideways

That is typical of PIR zone geometry. Rotate or reposition the unit so people cross its zones rather than approach the sensor head-on, or use a second sensor to cover the blind direction.

The sensor pairs but advanced features are missing

Check whether you commissioned it directly as Matter instead of through the required manufacturer hub. Confirm the firmware and region, then consult the model’s integration matrix. Basic motion or occupancy may work while custom zones, illuminance, or multi-target data remain unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery life is far shorter than expected

Review the mode in use, report frequency, signal strength, and automation polling. Thread and Zigbee runtimes can differ, and laboratory figures assume defined reporting behavior. Reduce unnecessary reports, improve network coverage, and replace the cell only after verifying that the device is not repeatedly reconnecting.

A buying checklist

  • Define the signal: Do you need an instant movement event, a persistent occupied state, or both?
  • Measure the room: Compare the usable range and field of view with the real seating, sleeping, and doorway positions.
  • Choose power deliberately: Use battery PIR where wiring is difficult; plan continuous power for demanding mmWave coverage when practical.
  • Check integration layers: Verify Matter support separately from Thread support, and identify any required border router, controller, or manufacturer hub.
  • Confirm feature exposure: Ask whether zones, light level, multi-target tracking, and presence states are available in your chosen platform or only in the vendor app.
  • Plan privacy: Prefer camera-free sensing and understand where occupancy data is processed and retained.
  • Plan recovery: Include manual controls, battery alerts, and a fallback shutoff for incorrect states.

Room-by-room recommendation

Room or area Recommended starting point Reason
Hallway or stair Battery PIR motion sensor Fast entry trigger, low power, and little need to track still occupants
Entryway Wide-angle PIR; add presence only if people wait there Motion handles arrival; presence is useful for a bench or reception area
Office MmWave presence, optionally paired with PIR Keeps lights and climate active while a worker remains seated
Living room Hybrid PIR plus mmWave PIR reacts quickly at entry; presence prevents shutoff during quiet viewing
Bedroom Carefully zoned presence sensor Tracks sleeping or resting occupants, but needs testing for fans, bedding, and adjacent rooms
Driveway or porch Outdoor-rated motion sensor Movement is the useful event; indoor presence specifications may not apply outdoors

Bottom line

Pick a motion sensor when your automation needs to react to movement through a zone, especially in hallways, entrances, and simple security rules. Pick a presence sensor when the automation must remain active while somebody sits, reads, watches television, or sleeps. For rooms where both fast response and reliable occupancy matter, combine PIR and mmWave, then calibrate zones and clear delays.

Before buying, verify the exact range and field of view, power assumptions, Matter certification, Thread infrastructure, controller support, and any manufacturer hub required for advanced features. Those details often determine whether the sensor behaves as expected more than the word “presence” or “motion” on the box.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a presence sensor detect a person who is completely motionless?

MmWave sensors detect very small movements such as breathing and minor posture shifts, not an abstract human outline. Performance depends on placement, range, target angle, firmware, and environmental interference, so test the actual room rather than assuming guaranteed detection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need both Matter and Thread for a smart sensor?

No. Thread is a low-power network transport, while Matter is an application-layer protocol. A Thread device is not automatically a Matter device. Check the exact model’s Matter support, then confirm that your home has the required Thread border router and Matter controller.

Will a PIR sensor work if I sit at a desk?

It may not. PIR generally needs movement across its detection zones, so a still occupant can time out. Increase the automation timeout, reposition the sensor, or use a presence sensor to maintain the occupied state.

Are mmWave presence sensors safe for bedrooms?

They are camera-free radar sensors, but privacy and comfort still depend on the product and installation. Review data handling, keep the sensing zone inside the intended room, and test sensitivity around beds, fans, curtains, and neighboring spaces.

Why does a presence sensor need calibration?

Radar reflections and room geometry vary. Calibration sets detection distance, sensitivity, and zones so the sensor recognizes the chair or bed without treating a doorway, moving curtain, fan, pet, or adjacent room as occupancy.
