Coach Andrew Brunette said the team wanted Ufko playing significant minutes after his play tapered in the season opener, rather than sitting out.
Why did the Predators send Ryan Ufko down?
Brunette described the move as a way to get Ufko more playing time and help him regain confidence and adjust. The coach said, “I thought his play tapered a little bit,” and added, “We don’t really want him sitting out. We want him playing.” He said the Predators wanted Ufko to “go play big minutes and do his thing down there.” Those remarks are the coach’s explanation of the assignment, not an independent evaluation of Ufko’s performance. Nashville’s transaction announcement confirmed the move; the team’s October 2 practice report provided the context.
Where did Nashville assign him?
Ufko was assigned to the Milwaukee Admirals, Nashville’s AHL destination for this move. This was an assignment, not a trade or release. Brunette said, “we’ll see him again at some point,” but did not give a date or timetable for a possible return to Nashville.
What was Ufko’s roster status before the move?
Ufko had appeared in Nashville’s season opener the day before the assignment, playing alongside captain Roman Josi, according to the team’s practice report. He was also among nine defensemen on the Predators’ 23-player opening-night roster announced September 28. The October 2 transaction followed the opener; it was not one of the team’s September training-camp cuts. The opening-night roster announcement listed the 23 players.

Who could take his place against Dallas?
Nashville’s October 2 practice report named Ilya Lyubushkin, Jack Ahcan and William Trudeau as possible defensive options for Saturday’s game against Dallas. The report described candidates, not a confirmed lineup, so it does not establish which player—if any—replaced Ufko in that game.
