Gremist asks Geralt to find pimpernel, make spirit at an abandoned distillery, and recruit Fritjof. Complete the three favors in any order, return to Gremist, then come back the next day to finish the quest and claim its rewards. The pimpernel errand includes an optional succubus encounter: accepting her help lets Geralt take the plant without killing her.
How to start Practicum in Advanced Alchemy
Find Gremist at Gedyneith on Ard Skellig. You can hear about him from Otto Bamber near Oxenfurt or Yolar at Gedyneith, or simply encounter him directly. Gremist initially refuses to teach Geralt, but agrees to consider it if Geralt completes three favors.

The quest is listed as a secondary quest with a suggested level of 24. Its three errands—finding pimpernel, making spirit, and recruiting Fritjof—can be completed in different orders, so choose based on which location is most convenient or which encounter you are ready for.
How to get pimpernel
Search the woods using Witcher Senses and investigate what happened to the missing apprentice. The trail leads to a succubus and a choice: kill her, or accept her help. A druid may urge Geralt to kill her, but the walkthrough describes that as a choice, not a requirement.

Accept the succubus’ help
If Geralt agrees to her help, she leads him to her cave and permits him to take the pimpernel. This is the direct way to complete the errand without killing her.
Kill the succubus
Geralt can instead side with the druid and kill the succubus. The available walkthrough confirms this branch but does not establish a unique reward for choosing it, so do not assume it grants an additional item or benefit.
How to make spirit at the abandoned distillery
Travel to the abandoned distillery on Hail Hill. Deal with the hostile occupant or occupants, then inspect the shack for the distiller’s instructions. Find the mash near the machinery. The useful sequence, based on Dagfin’s letter, is:
- Put the mash in the evaporator.
- Light the fire under the evaporator.
- Turn the right lever first, then the left lever, to cool the condenser.
- Collect the spirit.
The letter’s exact lever instruction reads: “Cool the the condenser. FIRST turn the right lever, then the left. NOT the other way around.” It also says to discard rotten malt in the stream. One walkthrough reports that getting the lever order wrong may not ruin the batch as long as the right-then-left sequence is eventually completed; treat that as guide-reported behavior, not a verified guarantee.

How to recruit Fritjof and protect the ritual
Find Fritjof in Blandare. He agrees to help Gremist if Geralt helps him perform a rain ritual. Go with him to the ritual site and defend him from foglets as they attack in waves. Fritjof’s wolf also helps in the fight. Once the ritual finishes, Fritjof agrees to accompany Geralt to Gremist.

When to return to Gremist
After completing all three favors, go back to Gremist. The quest objective is to wait until the next day; the detailed walkthrough likewise says to return after a day. Speak with him at the follow-up to resolve the quest and receive the reward.
Practicum in Advanced Alchemy rewards and unlocks
The quest overview lists a reward value of 240, plus five each of sulfur, alcohest, han fiber, and saltpeter. It also lists access to Gremist as a supplier. A separate walkthrough and GameBanshee report 80 XP at each of the three errand stages and another 80 XP at the final reward, while the quest overview lists 240. Those sources account for experience differently, and the discrepancy is unresolved; the figures should not be treated as a settled total.
Completing the quest also unlocks longer-term access to Gremist. A detailed walkthrough says he can sell alchemy supplies, a large amount of Potion of Clearance, and play Geralt in Gwent: Skellige Style.
Which order should you do the errands in?
The quest guide allows the three favors to be completed in varying order. There is no required sequence to preserve: choose the route that suits your current location and readiness. The meaningful decision is in the pimpernel investigation, where Geralt can accept the succubus’ help rather than kill her.
