For phones and other USB-powered personal devices, a power bank is usually the better fit. For an outage plan that includes AC-powered electronics or larger loads, a portable power station is generally more useful. Neither choice guarantees a set runtime: check usable energy, output limits, device compatibility and how you could recharge it. Medical equipment needs a device-specific backup plan confirmed with the device maker and care provider.
How the two options compare
| Consideration | Power bank | Portable power station |
|---|---|---|
| Best suited to | Phones and similar USB-powered personal devices | A wider mix of outage needs, including some AC-powered electronics or larger loads, if the specific unit supports them |
| Output to check | USB port type and output compatibility for the device | Available ports, continuous wattage and any surge requirement; an AC outlet alone does not establish compatibility |
| Runtime | Depends on usable energy, device draw and conversion losses; no universal runtime is established | Depends on usable energy, device draw, conversion losses and output limits; no universal runtime is established |
| Recharge options | Check the model documentation for supported sources and recharge time | May be rechargeable from an outlet, vehicle or compatible solar panel, depending on the model; verify supported sources and recharge time in its documentation |
| Medical-device suitability | Must be confirmed for the specific device and charger | Must be confirmed for the specific device and charger; an AC outlet does not guarantee support |
The CDC recommends planning backup power for personal devices, appliances and medical equipment. Its guidance says people experience about four hours of power loss per year on average; that is a broad average, not a forecast for your next outage or a sizing target. Large-scale disaster outages can last longer and may be life-threatening for people who depend on home-use medical devices. CDC power-source guidance
Choose based on what you need to run
Choose a power bank for personal USB devices
If your priority is keeping a phone or another compatible USB device charged, a power bank matches that job. Check that its port and output meet the device’s requirements. Do not assume that a phone-focused bank can run equipment requiring AC power.
Choose a portable power station for a wider mix of loads
A portable power station may be more useful when your plan includes AC-powered electronics or larger loads, but the category name is not a guarantee that a particular unit can run a particular device. Check the unit’s manual and specifications for port type, continuous output and any startup surge the device requires. Stored energy and output capability are separate constraints: a unit can have enough energy on paper but still be unable to supply the power a device needs at startup.

Estimate how long backup power may last
Start with the devices you actually need and how long you expect to use each one. Estimate their energy use over that period, then compare the total with the battery’s usable capacity, usually expressed in watt-hours (Wh). Account for conversion losses, especially when the battery’s stored energy must be converted to a different output type. Also confirm that the unit can deliver the required continuous power and any surge.
There is no universal runtime figure for either category. The sources cited here do not provide a head-to-head product test or a one-size-fits-all capacity threshold. Use the exact device and battery specifications to estimate your own needs rather than treating a capacity label as a promise of hours.

Plan how to recharge during the outage
A stored battery only supplies power until its usable energy is depleted. Before relying on one, check its documentation for supported recharge sources and times. A model may support an outlet, a vehicle or a compatible solar panel, but availability and compatibility vary. A solar panel must be compatible with the specific station, and its usefulness depends on whether you can access the panel’s charging source during the outage.
Make a separate plan for medical equipment
If a medical device is essential, do not select backup power by outlet type alone. Ask your care provider about outage procedures and confirm battery, output and charger compatibility with the device manufacturer. The FDA’s medical-device charging guidance advises using manufacturer-provided charging accessories, checking them for damage, and charging where the device is visible and away from flammable materials. The American Red Cross power-outage guidance also covers preparing for outages.

Understand the safety difference from a fuel generator
A battery power bank or portable power station is not the same as a fuel-burning generator. The EPA says battery-powered generators and solar power stations are available and do not give off fumes. Fuel-powered portable generators emit carbon monoxide: never use one indoors, and operate it outdoors and away from buildings. The CDC checklist calls for at least 20 feet of outdoor-rated extension cord for a generator. EPA power-outage and indoor-air-quality guidance and CDC power-source guidance

A practical selection checklist
- List the specific devices you want to keep running and their required output types.
- For each device, check connector, continuous wattage and any surge requirement against the battery’s specifications.
- Estimate total energy use for the duration you need, compare it with usable capacity and allow for conversion losses.
- Identify a realistic recharge source for the outage and verify model-specific compatibility and recharge time.
- For medical equipment, confirm the plan with both the device manufacturer and care provider.
