For most travelers making a personal copy of files, an external portable SSD is the simpler choice: connect it to a compatible computer or mobile device and copy the files. Choose a portable NAS-style device when wireless access or sharing among several devices matters enough to justify extra setup. Neither device, by itself, is a complete backup strategy: keep another copy somewhere separate from the device you carry.

What “portable NAS” means—and why the setup matters

A NAS (network-attached storage) makes files available over a network rather than only through a direct USB connection. But “portable NAS” can describe very different products: a conventional network drive that expects a router and wall power, a battery-powered wireless card-copy drive, or a compact device with Wi-Fi and a user-supplied SSD.

For example, Synology’s BeeStation setup calls for power and an Ethernet connection to a router. That is a useful illustration of a home-oriented NAS workflow, not a rule for every NAS. Review coverage describes the StationPC PocketCloud as a battery-powered device with Wi-Fi 6 and an M.2 NVMe 2280 slot, and the UnifyDrive UT2 as a Wi-Fi 6 device with NVMe storage. Those details are model-specific, and current regional availability is not established.

How the options compare for a trip

Travel need External portable SSD Portable NAS-style device
Accessing files Usually connects directly to one compatible host over USB. May offer wireless access; exact protocols, apps and host support depend on the model.
Power and setup Typically gets power through its host connection; check the device and host requirements. May have its own battery or need external power. Network and app setup vary by model.
Using several devices Usually move the drive between hosts, or connect it to a host that can share files. Can be more convenient when several devices need access at once, if the model supports simultaneous access.
Capacity and cost Capacity is set by the drive purchased. May include storage or require a separately purchased SSD. Compare the complete ready-to-use cost.
Travel durability Ratings vary by model; check the exact product’s drop and ingress specifications. Also varies by model; the device, battery, and cables may add bulk.
Backup workflow Supports direct file copying or host backup software. May support network-based workflows, depending on setup and software.

When an external SSD is the better fit

Pick a portable SSD if you can connect it to a compatible computer or mobile device and mainly need a straightforward place to copy files. It avoids depending on a travel router or a NAS app, and it is a natural fit for one person moving files between trips, shoots, or work sessions.

Samsung’s manufacturer specifications for the Portable SSD T7 list USB 3.2 Gen 2, capacities of 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB, a weight of 72 g, AES 256-bit hardware encryption, and advertised transfer speeds of up to 1,050 MB/s. That speed is a product maximum, not a guarantee for every host or copying situation. Samsung’s buying guide lists the T7 Shield as IP65 rated and drop resistant, while the T7 is listed as drop resistant; check the exact model and capacity before relying on a rating.

When a portable NAS is worth the extra setup

A portable NAS-style device is worth considering when wireless access or sharing files among multiple devices is central to the trip. It may let devices reach the same storage without repeatedly unplugging and reconnecting a drive. Before choosing one, confirm how it is powered, whether it creates its own Wi-Fi network or needs an existing network, which apps and file systems it requires, and whether simultaneous access is supported.

Some devices are designed for a more specific travel task than general network storage. Western Digital’s older My Passport Wireless SSD overview describes an SD card reader, one-touch card copying, wireless file access and manufacturer-claimed battery life of up to 10 hours. That figure is an old product claim, not current independent battery testing; present availability and software support are not established.

Photographer copying camera cards without a laptop

Look for a device specifically designed for card copying, with an SD reader and a workflow that can be completed without a computer. The older WD wireless drive is an example of that design, but its overview does not establish current sales or support. Verify those details for any product you consider.

Group sharing files on the trip

Consider a portable NAS-style device if several people need access at once and you can accommodate its power, network and app requirements. If reliable power or network setup is uncertain, a direct-attached SSD is likely to be the more straightforward workflow.

Check these details before you travel

  • Host compatibility: Confirm the drive or NAS works with your computer, phone, camera or tablet, including its ports, file system and required apps.
  • Power and network: Establish whether the device runs from the host, has a battery, needs a wall outlet, or depends on a router or Wi-Fi setup.
  • Capacity and total cost: Include any separately purchased M.2 SSD, cable, adapter or other required accessory in the comparison.
  • Durability and security: Check the exact model’s resistance ratings and encryption options. A feature listed for one product should not be assumed for another.
  • Software support: Confirm current app availability and support, particularly for older wireless products.
  • Test the workflow: Before leaving, copy a small set of files, disconnect and reconnect as needed, and open the copied files from the destination.

Keep a second copy, not just another device in your bag

An SSD or NAS can hold a useful copy, but one device traveling with you is still only one location for your data. Maintain another copy separately from the device you carry—ideally somewhere that will not be lost in the same incident—and check that files open after copying. A network feature or a larger capacity does not, on its own, establish that a second verified copy exists.
