Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are planned as Nintendo Switch 2 exclusives for 2027, and their first reveal introduces an open world of windswept islands and ocean. That could signal an important direction for the series, but it is too early to say the games will “change Pokémon forever”: the announcement leaves most gameplay details and long-term implications unanswered.
What are Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves?
They are the next announced entries in the Pokémon video game series. The Pokémon Company describes a shared premise: an open world of windswept islands and a vast ocean, where Pokémon have developed unique ecosystems. Players will team up with Pokémon to tackle obstacles, including forces of nature. When are they coming out, and what system do they require?
The games are planned for a simultaneous worldwide release in 2027, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2. The official sources reviewed give no exact release day or month. Nintendo’s U.S. product page currently lists Pokémon Winds as a digital edition with a 2027 release date; it does not establish a price, preorder date, physical edition, or bundle. Which Pokémon have been revealed?
The three announced first partners are Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua. Their types, abilities, and official descriptions provide the first concrete look at the new region’s Pokémon:

How are Winds and Waves different?
So far, the confirmed difference is the protagonist outfit shown for each version. The official press release describes a light-colored wide-brim hat outfit for Winds and a blue cap outfit for Waves. It does not establish other version-exclusive content.

Could these games change Pokémon forever?
That is an interpretation, not an official promise. An open world built around islands and ocean is a notable premise, and the mention of environmental obstacles suggests the setting may matter to how players explore. But the reveal does not explain the systems behind that idea, so it cannot yet show whether the games will reshape the series or establish a lasting new formula.

Switch 2 exclusivity is another meaningful change for players: these games are announced for that console, not the original Switch. Whether the platform decision or open-world design influences future Pokémon games is unknown. The announcement supports calling Winds and Waves a new direction worth watching—not a confirmed permanent transformation.

The Pokémon Company says the main theme heard in the first reveal video was recorded by the NHK Symphony Orchestra. Key details still to be announced include the exact release date, price, preorder timing, whether a physical edition or bundle will be offered, full gameplay systems, version-exclusive content, starter evolutions, and the roles of Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu. Those gaps limit what can responsibly be said about the games today; they are not evidence that a particular feature will or will not appear.
