Strong podcast interview questions give a guest room to tell a specific story, explain a decision, or rethink an assumption. Start with what listeners should take away, research what the guest has already shared, then prepare a short, flexible outline—not a script to read from.
How to prepare questions for a podcast interview
1. Decide what the episode promises listeners
Before writing questions, finish this sentence: “After listening, someone should understand, feel, or be able to do ___.” A focused promise helps distinguish questions that serve the episode from interesting but unrelated detours. The University of Illinois’ SIIP and Share guide recommends deciding what story or insight you want to uncover before drafting questions.
2. Research the guest and find a fresh angle
Review the guest’s biography, work, and previous interviews. Note a claim worth clarifying, a decision or turning point, a topic that has received little attention, and what listeners may reasonably want explained. Spotify for Creators advises hosts to show familiarity with a guest’s work and use earlier interviews as research rather than repeat them. Turn that research into a specific starting point: instead of “Tell us about your career,” ask about the choice, problem, or moment that connects directly to this episode’s promise.
3. Build a story arc
A useful outline can move from accessible context to the central issue, then through tension, choices, consequences, lessons, and what may happen next. The Illinois guide suggests considering the issue, where the heat or conflict lies, and its future impact. The sequence is a guide, not a requirement: a guest’s answer may reveal that a later question belongs earlier.

4. Write short anchor prompts
Give each question one main idea. Ask for a concrete example, process, decision, or turning point, and avoid embedding the answer or assuming how the guest felt. “What did you notice at that point?” gives the guest room to describe their experience; “You must have felt betrayed, right?” supplies a conclusion they may not share.
5. Prepare follow-up cues, not a second script
Keep a few brief prompts nearby: “What happened next?”, “Can you give me an example?”, “What made that difficult?”, and “What changed your mind?” Use them when an answer raises a useful thread. Greg Bresnitz, a podcast interviewer quoted by Spotify for Creators, describes following up when a guest says something that piques his interest so he can get the full thought.

6. Leave room to listen
Let the guest finish, then follow an unexpected detail if it helps listeners understand the subject. Return to the outline if the conversation drifts away from the episode’s purpose. A flexible outline preserves structure while allowing the conversation to sound like one.
7. Close with reflection and a useful next step
Near the end, ask what the guest hopes listeners remember, whether an important question is still missing, and where listeners can learn more about their work. These prompts give the conversation a clear landing without forcing a particular answer.

How many questions should you prepare for a 30-minute interview?
There is no universal number. For a 30-minute conversation, Descript’s 2026 guide suggests preparing five to eight main questions, while Riverside’s 2026 guide suggests six to ten open-ended questions. Treat both as planning advice, not a research-backed threshold. The right number depends on how long answers run, how much follow-up the topic needs, and how much time you reserve for the opening and close. Prepare more possible prompts than you expect to use, then prioritize the few that serve the episode’s promise.

How to turn a generic question into a stronger one
| Less useful prompt | Stronger direction | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| “Tell us about yourself.” | Ask about the moment, choice, or problem that begins the episode’s particular story. | It gives the guest a clear point to start from and connects the answer to the listener’s reason for tuning in. |
| A yes-or-no question such as “Was that difficult?” | “What made that difficult?” | It invites explanation instead of ending the exchange at yes or no. |
| “You felt alone when that happened, didn’t you?” | “How did that experience affect you?” | It does not dictate the guest’s feelings or assume what they will say. |
| A question already answered in earlier interviews | Refer to what the guest has said before and ask what remains unclear or has changed. | It shows preparation and makes room for a fresh answer. |
What makes an interview question work?
- Open rather than closed: “What changed?” is more likely to invite an explanation than “Did anything change?”
- Guest-specific rather than generic: Connect the prompt to something the guest actually did, said, or experienced.
- Story-seeking rather than abstract: Ask for a moment, example, decision, or process that listeners can follow.
- Neutral rather than leading: Do not plant an emotion, motive, or conclusion in the question.
- Flexible rather than scripted: Keep the outline in view, but let a worthwhile answer shape the next question.
Optional tools for question preparation
Podcastools describes a free, profession-aware question generator and advises users to review its suggestions. Treat generated prompts as drafts: check that they fit the guest and episode, and remove assumptions or questions the guest has answered repeatedly. Riverside’s interview-planning template and Descript’s guide discuss adjacent recording, editing, transcription, and production workflows; those tools are optional and not necessary to develop a strong question outline.
