Choose PDF only after checking the export application’s current guidance and the recipient’s requirements: the available authoritative sources do not establish chart-specific PDF behavior or settings.
At a glance: match the format to the destination
| Format | What the specification establishes | A practical fit |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Lossless raster images; supports optional alpha transparency. | A bitmap workflow or chart intended for a known pixel size. |
| SVG | Vector and mixed vector/raster graphics that can scale to different display resolutions. | A chart that must remain sharp as its display size changes. |
| PDF-specific chart export behavior is not established by the sources cited here. | Use when the recipient or publishing workflow requires PDF, after confirming current export guidance. |
When to export a chart as PNG
PNG is a raster format: the image is represented as pixels. The W3C’s PNG Third Edition Recommendation describes it as a lossless, portable, compressed format for static and animated raster images. PNG supports indexed color, grayscale and truecolor, optional alpha transparency, and sample depths from 1 to 16 bits. The sample-depth range is a format parameter, not a comparison of chart quality or file size. W3C PNG Third Edition, published 24 June 2025.
PNG is a sensible choice when a destination expects a bitmap or when the chart will appear at a known display size. Because it is raster, decide on pixel dimensions for the intended use; enlarging it beyond those dimensions can make its edges and text look less crisp. PNG’s specification includes online viewing and progressive presentation among its design goals, but that alone does not guarantee how a particular website or application will handle an exported chart.
Use PNG when transparency is needed and the receiving workflow supports it: the format explicitly allows alpha transparency. Check the exported result in its destination, especially if precise appearance matters.

- Pages are white and blank (unlined writing paper) allowing more freedom to practice writing, penmanship, drawing, sketching, and creating lesson plans
- The easel paper pad provides a sturdy writing surface and a convenient place to take notes during presentations
- Chart paper serves as a great teacher tool for modeling letter formation and writing skills
- The flipchart paper pad also makes an excellent resource for at-home learning environments; Use for writing to-do lists, meeting agendas, or quick notes
- Two top hole punches allow for hanging of the chart pad in classrooms and offices
When to export a chart as SVG
SVG is an XML-based language for vector and mixed vector/raster graphics. It can represent shapes, images and text, and is specified to scale to different display resolutions. That makes it a strong choice when a chart needs to be resized while remaining crisp. See the W3C SVG 2 Candidate Recommendation Snapshot, dated 30 July 2026.
SVG’s scalability does not guarantee identical rendering in every application. If fonts, fine details or exact appearance matter, open the exported file in the actual receiving application and check it there. SVG can include raster images as well as vector content, so an export containing embedded raster material may not behave like an all-vector chart when enlarged.

When to choose PDF
Choose PDF when the receiving workflow, publisher or recipient asks for it, but verify the exporting application’s current PDF instructions and the destination’s requirements first. The cited evidence does not establish PDF-specific behavior for chart exports, so it cannot support claims here about how PDF preserves chart text or graphics, what settings to choose, or how it compares with PNG and SVG for fidelity.
If no one requires PDF, decide between PNG and SVG based on whether the destination expects pixels or needs the chart at multiple display sizes. If PDF is required, test the export in the intended workflow rather than assuming a particular result.

A quick decision process
- Identify the destination. Check whether the chart is going into a website, document, slide deck or another application, and follow that workflow’s format requirements. Test compatibility if it is uncertain.
- Decide whether the chart will be resized. For multiple display resolutions or changing sizes, SVG’s specified scalability is useful. For a bitmap destination, export PNG at dimensions suited to its intended display size.
- Check transparency needs. PNG explicitly supports optional alpha transparency. For SVG, verify how the particular export and receiving application handle the chart.
- Follow PDF requirements when applicable. Confirm the recipient’s requirements and the exporter application’s current documentation, then inspect the result in the target workflow.
