All three have documented Android TV client paths relevant to Google TV, but there is no universal winner. Jellyfin is the clearest fit if you want a server and official client with no subscription requirement. Plex and Emby offer their own client and paid-feature ecosystems; check each service’s current terms and confirm the app works on your specific Google TV device before choosing.
What you are comparing
Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby are software platforms for organizing and playing a personal media library through a server and client apps. They are not Google TV hardware or accessories. For a television running Google TV, the relevant compatibility evidence is the availability of an Android TV client; that does not establish that every app version or feature behaves identically on every Google TV model.
Jellyfin’s official client directory lists an Android TV and Fire TV app. Plex’s support index includes Android TV/Fire TV material, and Emby has dedicated Android TV documentation. Jellyfin also maintains broader client documentation.
How the options differ
Jellyfin: no subscription required for the server or official clients
Jellyfin’s official client directory states: “no subscription of any form is required to use the Jellyfin server or any official client.” That makes it the most straightforward option in this comparison if avoiding a subscription is your deciding requirement. The statement does not establish that every possible third-party service or setup has no cost.

Plex: check the feature you need against current plan terms
Plex documents Android TV support in its support index and maintains a separate Plex: Free vs Paid guide. Consult that guide for current feature eligibility rather than relying on old price or feature summaries. The support index is a map of support topics, not proof of playback behavior on a particular Google TV model.
Emby: compare Android TV documentation with Premiere features
Emby publishes Android TV client documentation and an Emby Premiere overview. Check both to see how the client path and any paid features match your needs. The cited pages do not establish a universal device-level experience or a head-to-head performance result.

What to verify on your Google TV device
An Android TV client listing is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that your particular combination of hardware, media, and network will work as you expect. Before moving a library or paying for a feature, check the app listing on the exact device and try a representative sample of your media.
- Confirm the app is listed and installable on your specific Google TV television or streaming device.
- Test the file types you actually watch, including their audio tracks and subtitle formats.
- Test playback over the network you will use day to day, including from the server location you intend to keep.
- For Plex or Emby, verify the exact feature you want is included under the applicable current plan and region.
Why there is no universal winner
The official pages establish client documentation and licensing information, not a controlled comparison using the same Google TV model, media files, and network. They therefore do not support a general ranking for interface quality, stability, speed, privacy, or ease of setup. Treat those as setup-specific questions: trial the apps on your own device and library, and decide based on the results you observe.
