For repeatable screenshots of signed-in web pages, Playwright is usually the easier starting point: its official guide documents saving and reusing authenticated browser state with storageState. Puppeteer can also capture authenticated pages, but you establish the site’s session through its actual login flow and manage the browser context yourself. Both support page and element screenshots; choose based on your authentication method and whether you need Playwright Test’s integrated visual assertions.
How the authentication workflows differ
Playwright: save and reload browser state
Playwright’s documented workflow is to sign in once, save the browser context’s state, then load that state into contexts used for later tests. The saved state can include cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey/WebAuthn-based authentication. Session storage is not included in the standard state file; applications that depend on it need custom save-and-restore handling. See the Playwright authentication guide.
Verify that login has actually completed before saving state. A redirect or delayed cookie creation can otherwise leave you with a file that exists but does not represent a usable session. Playwright recommends storing authentication files in a dedicated directory and adding that directory to .gitignore. Treat the file as a credential: it may contain cookies and headers that let someone impersonate the account. If the state only needs to exist during a run, a test output directory is another option.
Puppeteer: establish the session in a browser context
Puppeteer browser contexts isolate cookies and local storage. Create or select a context, perform the site’s real login flow there, wait for the authenticated page, and capture from its page. The cited BrowserContext API documents context cookie operations, but the cited material does not establish a matching serialized storage-state workflow like Playwright’s.

Page.authenticate() is for HTTP authentication, not a general-purpose web-app login. It supplies HTTP-auth credentials and enables request interception behind the scenes, which may affect performance. It does not automatically fill a site’s login form or create the site’s application session. See the Puppeteer Page API.

For a project centered on reusable signed-in state or Playwright Test visual baselines, Playwright has the more directly documented path. If your existing automation is Puppeteer-based, it can still capture authenticated content; implement and verify the session in the context that will take the shot. Do not infer a universal speed or reliability winner from these API differences.
Build a reproducible authenticated screenshot
The examples below use Playwright Test because it has a documented state-reuse flow. Replace the example login URL, selectors, and destination with those for your application. The selectors must identify stable elements in your own site.
1. Install Playwright Test
In a Node.js project, install the test runner and its browser binaries:
Recommended Free Tools
npm init -y
npm install --save-dev @playwright/test
npx playwright install
2. Sign in once and save state
Create tests/auth.setup.ts. Wait for an element that proves the account is signed in, not merely for a URL change:

import { test as setup, expect } from '@playwright/test';
setup('authenticate', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/login');
await page.getByLabel('Email').fill(process.env.TEST_EMAIL!);
await page.getByLabel('Password').fill(process.env.TEST_PASSWORD!);
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Sign in' }).click();
await expect(page.getByRole('navigation', { name: 'Account' })).toBeVisible();
await page.context().storageState({ path: 'playwright/.auth/user.json' });
});
Set TEST_EMAIL and TEST_PASSWORD in your local environment or CI secret store; do not hard-code credentials. Add playwright/.auth/ to .gitignore so the state file is not committed.
3. Configure tests to load the state and capture
In playwright.config.ts, make the setup project run first and configure the capture project to use the saved state:
import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
testDir: './tests',
projects: [
{ name: 'setup', testMatch: /auth.setup.ts/ },
{
name: 'chromium',
use: {
...devices['Desktop Chrome'],
storageState: 'playwright/.auth/user.json',
},
dependencies: ['setup'],
},
],
});
Then create tests/capture.spec.ts. Keep the destination and readiness check specific to the page being captured:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('captures the signed-in dashboard', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/account/dashboard');
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Dashboard' })).toBeVisible();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/dashboard.png', fullPage: true });
});
Run the suite with npx playwright test. Ensure the output directory exists or create it in your project setup. If the page relies on session storage, add application-specific code to restore it before navigating; the standard storageState file does not include session storage.
Equivalent Puppeteer capture pattern
This example performs the site’s form login in the same page context that captures the page. Adapt the selectors and authenticated-state check for the application. Install Puppeteer with npm install puppeteer; its package provides a browser download as part of installation in the standard setup.

If your site uses HTTP authentication rather than an application login form, Puppeteer’s page.authenticate({ username, password }) may fit that specific case. Do not use it as a substitute for the site’s normal sign-in flow.
Make captures stable and appropriately scoped
- Wait for meaningful readiness. Wait for a signed-in marker and the content that matters, not just navigation completion. Applications may render data after the document loads.
- Fix the rendering inputs. Use the same viewport, device scale, browser version, account state, and target URL for comparable captures. The screenshot APIs expose options such as output path and scale; consult the Playwright Page API or Puppeteer screenshot guide for the API details.
- Choose the capture region deliberately. A normal screenshot is suited to the visible viewport; request full-page output when the whole document matters. For a focused component, use Playwright’s locator/element screenshot capability or Puppeteer’s element screenshot API. Puppeteer documents that an element is scrolled into view if necessary.
- Control dynamic content. Animations, rotating data, clocks, and personalized content can change between runs. Stabilize these in the test environment or wait for the relevant state before capturing.
Visual regression testing with Playwright Test
If screenshots are test artifacts rather than just files to inspect, Playwright Test can compare a page against a stored baseline using toHaveScreenshot(). Its documented assertion waits until two consecutive page screenshots are identical, then compares the last one against the baseline. The assertion is available only with the Playwright test runner, not as a standalone feature of the browser automation API. See the PageAssertions API.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBaseline comparisons are most useful when the browser, viewport, authenticated account, and page data are controlled. A changed screenshot may signal an intentional UI update, an unstable page, or a genuine regression; review the diff rather than treating every mismatch as a product defect.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
The cited official documentation does not provide a controlled, same-workload performance or reliability comparison between Playwright and Puppeteer. Timing depends on the browser and version, login mechanism, page behavior, waits, and screenshot scope. Benchmark your own route and flow if runtime matters, keeping those inputs constant. Puppeteer’s HTTP authentication helper enables request interception, which may affect performance; that note applies to that helper rather than every Puppeteer capture.
For either library, operational effort includes browser installation, session setup, secret storage, handling expired credentials, and maintaining stable capture conditions. A failed login can still produce an image of a login or error page, so assert an authenticated marker before saving the screenshot.

Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot API rather than a browser automation test, ScreenshotNeo takes a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. It accepts the cookie/consent banner like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response includes X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client.

Common problems and fixes
The screenshot shows a login page
The state may have been saved before login finished, may have expired, or may not cover the storage mechanism the application uses. Verify the signed-in marker before saving and after loading state. For session-storage authentication in Playwright, implement explicit save-and-restore handling.
The state file is missing or tests start before setup
Run the authentication setup before dependent tests. In Playwright Test, declare the setup project as a dependency of the project that loads the state, as in the configuration above. Confirm the configured path matches the path written by the setup step.

The state works locally but not in CI
Check that credentials are available as CI secrets, the state file is created in the current job, and the site accepts the CI environment’s session. Do not commit a local state file as a shortcut; it can grant account access.
The capture is blank, incomplete, or inconsistent
Wait for an application-specific ready element and the content to appear. Use a fixed viewport and choose viewport, full-page, or element capture based on the intended output. A navigation event alone may not mean client-rendered content is ready.
Puppeteer HTTP authentication slows a capture
Page.authenticate() enables request interception according to the Page API. Use it only when the site actually requires HTTP authentication; for a form-based login, use the site’s normal sign-in flow instead.

Does Playwright’s storageState save sessionStorage?
No. Session storage needs custom save-and-restore handling.
Can Puppeteer capture one element instead of the whole page?
Yes. Its ElementHandle screenshot API captures an element and scrolls it into view if necessary.
Does Playwright’s screenshot assertion work outside Playwright Test?
No. The documented toHaveScreenshot() assertion works only with the Playwright test runner.
