Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf a Playwright screenshot test passes locally but fails in CI, first compare the CI’s actual screenshot, expected screenshot and trace. A different operating system, browser build, headless environment or page state can change the render; the title alone cannot identify which caused a particular failure. Match the environment and make volatile content deterministic before relaxing the comparison or updating a baseline. Playwright’s visual comparison guidance specifically warns that rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode.
Start with the failure artifacts, not the threshold
Download the expected image, actual image and diff image from the CI report. Look at the shape and location of the difference before changing the test.
- Broad changes across text, spacing or wrapping point toward different rendering conditions, such as fonts, browser build or platform.
- A localized change around a timestamp, avatar, rotating banner or live region suggests volatile content or data.
- A completely different page may mean the test captured the wrong state: navigation, loading, authentication or a network request did not finish as expected.
- No usable screenshot or a browser launch error is an execution problem, not a pixel-comparison problem. Check the test report and browser logs.
Do not overwrite the expected image merely because the CI run failed. A baseline update can hide a real regression as easily as it can record an intentional design change.
Compare the local and CI rendering environments
Record these conditions for both runs. Some are explicitly identified by Playwright as possible sources of rendering variation; the others are useful variables to compare when diagnosing a mismatch, not proof of the cause.

| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Operating system or container image | Different platforms can render fonts and browser content differently. |
| Playwright package version and installed browser build | A package and browser installation that are out of sync can make runs unlike one another. |
| Browser project | Different browser projects can produce distinct output. With multiple projects, keep the corresponding snapshots distinct. |
| Headless or headed mode, viewport and device scale | These affect the conditions and pixel dimensions of the capture. |
| Fonts and whether they have loaded | Font differences or late font loading can alter glyphs, line breaks and layout. |
| Locale and time zone | Compare these when dates, numbers or other localized content is visible. |
| Test data and network responses | Live or uncontrolled responses can change what the page displays. |
| Hardware and power conditions | Playwright lists hardware and battery versus power-adapter conditions among possible rendering factors. |
By default, Playwright snapshot names can include browser and platform information. If the team intentionally compares several browsers or platforms, configure and maintain the appropriate project-specific baselines rather than comparing unlike renders.
Make CI use a consistent Playwright environment
The most reliable starting point is to create and compare visual baselines in the same environment. If a baseline was made on a developer’s Mac or Windows machine and CI renders on Linux, generate or review the baseline in the CI environment instead—or deliberately maintain separate baselines for each environment you test.

- Align the Playwright package and browser. Use the browser installation associated with the Playwright version in your project rather than assuming another locally installed browser is equivalent.
- Use a Playwright container in CI. Choose an image tag aligned with the installed Playwright version; do not rely on a floating or mismatched image as a reproducible environment.
- Install dependencies and run tests consistently. Playwright’s CI guide shows this basic JavaScript sequence:
npm ci,npx playwright install --with-deps, thennpx playwright test. See the Playwright CI guide for setup details for your runner. - Keep visual runs reproducible. The CI guide recommends setting workers to
1for stability. Teams using powerful self-hosted runners may choose to parallelize, but parallelism by itself is not evidence that it caused a screenshot mismatch; sharding is another documented way to scale.
Playwright’s current CI guidance says browser caching is generally not recommended: restoring a cache can take as long as downloading the browsers, and Linux operating-system dependencies cannot be cached. If you do cache browser binaries, the guide says to key the cache to the Playwright version.
Control dynamic page content
toHaveScreenshot() already waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the result. It also disables CSS animations, transitions and Web Animations for the capture by default: finite animations are fast-forwarded and infinite ones are canceled, then resumed afterward. These safeguards do not make live data or every changing element deterministic.

- Use fixed test data, seeded values or controlled network responses rather than relying on changing production content.
- Wait for the page state that actually matters, such as a specific element or completed data load, before capturing.
- For an intentionally variable region, mask only the relevant locator or use a screenshot stylesheet to hide or normalize that region.
- Avoid broad masking that could conceal a real layout or content regression.
The PageAssertions API reference documents screenshot masking and stylesheets along with the screenshot assertion options.
Use traces to find state and network differences
A screenshot shows pixels, but not the sequence of actions and responses that produced them. Playwright recommends the Trace Viewer for CI failures; its timeline, DOM snapshots and network requests can reveal whether CI reached a different state or received different data. The best-practices guide says to use the Trace Viewer instead of videos and screenshots for CI failures.

- Configure tracing on retry in the Playwright Test configuration, or record a trace for a local reproduction.
- Open the failed trace and inspect the actions leading up to the screenshot, the DOM snapshot at capture time and relevant network requests.
- If the page state differs, fix the test’s waits, setup, test data or request handling rather than changing pixel tolerances.
- If the browser will not launch, set
DEBUG=pw:browserin CI to collect browser launch logs, as described in the CI guide.
Set visual tolerances only for understood differences
The screenshot assertion offers threshold for perceived color differences and maxDiffPixels or maxDiffPixelRatio for the number or proportion of differing pixels. These options allow differences; they do not fix the environment or explain why the page changed. Use them only after reviewing the diff and deciding that the variation is harmless. Keep the allowance as narrow as practical, and avoid raising a global threshold to silence unexplained failures.
The same API supports scale: 'css' when you want one output pixel per CSS pixel. scale: 'device' captures device pixels, which can produce larger images on high-DPI displays. Check that the intended scale and viewport are consistent between baseline generation and CI.

Update a baseline only after review
For an intentional visual change, run Playwright with --update-snapshots, inspect the resulting images and commit the reviewed baseline alongside the change. Do not have CI automatically update expected snapshots to make a failing test pass: that removes the comparison’s ability to flag unexpected changes.
Troubleshoot common CI screenshot failures
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Most text and layout differ between local and CI | OS, fonts, browser build, headless mode, viewport or device scale | Compare the environment checklist and reproduce in the CI container. |
| Only a date, image or live region differs | Dynamic content or uncontrolled responses | Stabilize test data, control the response, or mask/style only the known variable region. |
| The screenshot shows a loading, error or logged-out page | Page state, navigation, authentication or network request | Inspect the trace’s actions, DOM snapshots and network requests; fix the setup or wait condition. |
| Browser fails before the test captures | Browser installation, OS dependencies or launch configuration | Align the package, container and browser installation; use DEBUG=pw:browser for launch logs. |
| A small, reviewed rendering difference remains | Known, acceptable variation | Use a narrowly scoped tolerance or mask, documenting why the difference is acceptable. |
| The interface changed intentionally | Stale expected image | Review and commit a deliberately updated snapshot. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a website screenshot without managing a browser runner, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return an image or PDF; its API accepts common screenshot-API parameter names, which can simplify switching.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for options and response details. For example, this cURL request captures a URL to a WebP file:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
