If a Playwright screenshot is blank after a click, wait for the page state the screenshot needs—not merely for the click to finish. For a full document navigation, wait for the destination URL and then assert a meaningful destination element. For a client-side route or in-page update, assert the expected content directly before capturing.
Use a wait that matches what the link does
A Playwright click waits for the target to be actionable and, when it triggers navigation, for navigation to happen and the page to start loading. That does not prove the content you want to capture has rendered. Choose the synchronization point based on the behavior under test.
Full document navigation to a known URL
Wait for the main-frame URL, then check for a destination-specific element before taking the screenshot. For example, with Playwright Test and TypeScript:

});Replace the example page, link name, URL pattern, and heading with the values for your application. The URL wait confirms the expected address; the locator assertion confirms that meaningful destination content is visible. Locator assertions retry while checking their condition, so they are a better readiness check than assuming that navigation alone means the page is ready.

Register the URL wait before clicking
If the navigation may happen quickly or you need to establish the wait before triggering it, run the URL wait and click together:

Client-side route or in-page content update
For a single-page application, the URL may change without a new document load, or the URL may not change at all. In that case, wait for the new page state rather than treating a navigation event as proof that the content is ready:

Playwright’s click actionability checks establish that the click target is unique, visible, stable, enabled, and able to receive events; they do not assert that a later application update has appeared.

Why the screenshot can be blank
The title alone does not establish the cause. A common possibility is that the screenshot is taken after the click returns but before the intended content is ready. Playwright is designed to act when elements become actionable, which is distinct from waiting for every application-specific render step.
- The destination has not rendered yet: navigation may have started, but the expected content is not visible. Add a destination-specific locator assertion.
- The click did not lead to the expected destination: inspect the current URL and confirm what the link is supposed to do.
- The page is poorly hydrated: an action can appear to do nothing when client-side code is not ready. The Playwright navigation guide describes poor page hydration as a likely explanation in that scenario, but it is not a diagnosis for every blank capture.
- A different page received the navigation: if the link opens a new tab or window, the page object being captured may still refer to the original page. Check whether the link is expected to open another page and capture the page that actually received the destination.
For exact API behavior, check the documentation version that matches the Playwright version installed in your project. The navigation guide uses the /next/ documentation path, whose details may differ from a released version.

Waits that are poor generic fixes
page.waitForNavigation(): the Page API marks it deprecated and says, “This method is inherently racy, please use page.waitForURL() instead.” UsewaitForURL()when the condition you need is a main-frame URL.waitUntil: 'networkidle': the API defines this as no network connections for at least 500 ms, but discourages using it for tests and recommends relying on web assertions instead. Network quiet is not a universal guarantee that the particular UI content you need has rendered.page.waitForTimeout(): Playwright says to use it only for debugging; timer-based tests can be flaky. A fixed sleep may be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one, without proving the destination is ready.
For visual comparisons, use a screenshot assertion after readiness
If you are writing a Playwright Test visual comparison, expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the result with the expectation. Use it after the post-click URL or content condition has been met; otherwise, a visually stable blank page could be mistaken for the intended state. Screenshot assertions are a Playwright Test runner feature, not a general replacement for selecting the right post-click wait.
Troubleshoot a wait that does not resolve
- Check the address: inspect
page.url()after the click. If it did not change, determine whether the link should navigate, update an application route, open another page, or reveal content in place. - Check the expected content: confirm that the locator in
toBeVisible()exists on the destination and represents the state you want. A wrong selector or heading name will keep the assertion from passing. - Match the wait to the behavior: use
waitForURL()for a known main-frame URL, and a locator assertion for an SPA or in-page update. - Check which page you capture: if the expected behavior is a new tab or window, verify that your test is capturing the page that opened. The correct handling depends on the application’s behavior.
- Investigate hydration: if the click seems to do nothing even though the target is actionable, check whether the application has finished attaching its client-side behavior.
- Check your installed version: consult the documentation for your Playwright release when an API or behavior differs from the current or next documentation.
