To capture a nested chat history at its top in Playwright, set scrollTop to 0 on the element that actually scrolls, then take the screenshot. A nested panel is not necessarily controlled by the document’s scroll position.
Reset the chat history’s own scroll position
Replace the illustrative test ID below with a stable locator for the scrollable history element in your application. The code moves that element to its top and captures the element as it is currently displayed.

Make sure you have the right element
Inspect the chat page and identify the element whose scrollTop changes when you scroll the message history. Do not assume that document, the page, or an outer layout container owns the scroll. Prefer an application-provided test ID or a role-and-name locator that uniquely identifies the history region.

If you do not have a test ID, use the locator that matches your DOM. For example:

Choose what to capture
Choose the screenshot method according to whether the chat history alone or its surrounding interface matters.

Playwright describes fullPage: true as capturing the full scrollable page. It does not mean that an independently scrolling inner panel is automatically reset or expanded. See Playwright screenshots documentation.

When to use wheel scrolling instead
Direct assignment to scrollTop is concise for a normal scroll container. If the application responds to wheel events or loads messages as the user scrolls, use Playwright’s mouse wheel input and wait for the application’s own loading signal before capturing.

Handle lazy-loaded or virtualized history
Some chat applications fetch older messages when the history reaches the top, or render only the messages currently near the viewport. In those cases, moving the scroll position to zero may trigger an update or may happen before the desired messages are present.
- Locate the actual scroll container and confirm its current
scrollTop. - Move it to the top using
scrollTop = 0, or use wheel input if the application relies on wheel handling. - Wait for the application’s specific loading indicator, message count, or other reliable completion signal.
- Check that the desired messages are present and the container remains at the top after the update.
- Capture the viewport or element that includes the evidence you need.
The loading trigger, virtualization behavior, and appropriate wait condition are application-specific; Playwright’s general API documentation cannot determine them for a particular chat implementation.

Troubleshooting
- The screenshot still shows the bottom of the conversation: Verify that your locator targets the element whose
scrollTopchanges during manual scrolling. The document and chat panel may scroll independently. - The screenshot is correct but older messages are missing: The app may load history on reaching the top or virtualize off-screen messages. Wait for its loading signal and confirm the messages are rendered before capturing.
- The wheel event appears to do nothing: Ensure the pointer is over the chat panel and that it is visible and able to scroll. Wheel input follows the page’s event handling; use direct
scrollTopassignment when the element is a standard scroll container. - The element screenshot cuts off the desired content: A locator screenshot captures the selected element’s visible area at its current scroll position. It is not a request to expand the inner panel to all its scrollable content.
- The full-page screenshot does not show the whole chat history:
fullPage: truecovers the page’s scrollable area, not necessarily an independently scrolling nested panel. Control the panel separately or capture the desired visible state.
