The Model Context Protocol (MCP) Puppeteer reference server is archived and no longer actively maintained. That status applies to the reference server—not to Puppeteer’s screenshot APIs, which remain documented.

There is no controlled head-to-head test in the sources cited here for fidelity, speed, output size, or reliability, so none of those dimensions establishes a winner.
What Playwright MCP can capture
The dedicated tool is browser_take_screenshot. Its documented parameters include target, type, filename, fullPage, and scale. It can capture the visible viewport, a target element, or the full scrollable page. A full-page capture cannot be combined with an element target.

- Formats: PNG, JPEG, and WebP. If
typeis omitted, Playwright infers the format from the filename extension; without a filename extension it defaults to PNG. - Scale: CSS pixels are the default. Choose device-pixel scaling for a higher-resolution image.
- Response: omit the filename to return the image inline in the tool response. The server can omit image responses with
--image-responses=omit.
Playwright MCP also uses accessibility snapshots to expose structured page content and references for interaction. Screenshots are useful for visual layout, canvas or chart content, and documenting a bug; use a snapshot to locate and interact with elements. The official guide puts it this way: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use browser_snapshot to get refs to interact with.” See the screenshot tool documentation and getting-started guide.

What Puppeteer MCP and Puppeteer provide
The archived MCP server
The Model Context Protocol project’s reference Puppeteer server is archived. In a response dated May 29, 2025, a project maintainer said it was no longer actively maintained and recommended checking the alternatives in its README. Its historical tools included puppeteer_screenshot, but do not assume that this wrapper exposes every option in the current Puppeteer library. Check the MCP servers README and maintainer status discussion before relying on it for a new deployment.
The Puppeteer library
Puppeteer remains a distinct choice for code you own. Its current guide documents Page.screenshot() for a page and ElementHandle.screenshot() for an element. Its API options include an output path, full-page capture, clipped regions, image type, quality where supported, and transparent-background behavior. Which one should you choose?
Choose Playwright MCP for a new MCP screenshot workflow
It has a currently documented installation path and a purpose-built screenshot tool with documented viewport, element, and full-page capture. It is a particularly natural fit when an assistant needs both visual inspection and structured accessibility information to find page elements.

Choose Puppeteer APIs for an existing Puppeteer codebase
If your team already writes Puppeteer scripts, use its page and element screenshot methods directly rather than adopting the archived MCP wrapper by default. Puppeteer’s documentation points to chrome-devtools-mcp for MCP browser automation and debugging; that is a separate server, not the archived Model Context Protocol Puppeteer reference server. Use the archived Puppeteer MCP server cautiously
It may remain relevant to an existing setup, but its archived status makes it a poor default for a new MCP deployment when ongoing maintenance matters. Historical issue reports include individual users’ setup problems; they do not establish how often those problems occur or prove that every installation is unreliable. Set up Playwright MCP
The official installation page lists Node.js 20 or newer and an MCP client as prerequisites. Its standard setup invokes npx with @playwright/mcp@latest; the browser downloads automatically on first use. Follow the current installation instructions for the configuration format and client-specific steps.
