Claiming a PlayStation Plus monthly game adds it to your library, but it is not the same as buying it: you need an active PlayStation Plus membership to play it. Free-to-play downloads are different, and most do not require PlayStation Plus.
What claiming a PlayStation Plus monthly game means
PlayStation says you can add monthly games to your library and download and play them while you have an active membership plan. In other words, “claiming” gives you access under the membership condition; it does not make the game a permanent, unrestricted purchase. See PlayStation’s PlayStation Plus games FAQ.

The game remains associated with your library, but you cannot play a claimed monthly game while your membership is inactive. PlayStation’s guidance describes loss of access to play; it does not establish that every game’s library display, save data, or entitlement state behaves identically.
What happens when PlayStation Plus ends
If you cancel, benefits do not stop immediately when paid time remains. PlayStation says they continue until the end of the previously purchased payment period. After the subscription ends, access to monthly games and other Plus benefits ends. The PlayStation Plus cancellation guidance lists monthly games, online storage, and online multiplayer among the benefits you lose access to.

How claiming and downloading work
PlayStation adds new monthly games each calendar month. Its support instructions treat adding a game to the library and downloading it as separate steps:
- PS5: Open PlayStation Plus, select Benefits, then Monthly Games, and choose Download.
- PS4: Open PlayStation Plus, select Monthly Games, then choose Add to Library and Download.
You can also select games for remote download in a browser or the PlayStation App. Because adding to the library and downloading are distinct in PlayStation’s instructions, you do not need to finish downloading during the offer window if you have already added the title to your library. Follow the PlayStation monthly-games instructions for the current interface.

Not every free PlayStation Store game is a monthly game
“Free game” can refer to different kinds of access. The membership rule for a claimed monthly game should not be applied to every game that costs nothing to download.
| Game category | What to expect |
|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus monthly game | Play requires an active PlayStation Plus membership; access ends when the subscription ends. |
| Free-to-play Store game | Most do not require PlayStation Plus. Check the individual game’s Store listing for any specific requirements. |
| Extra or Premium Game Catalog or Classics Catalog game | Access depends on your membership plan, and some titles have service end dates. Catalog access is separate from claiming a monthly game. |
PlayStation explains that most free-to-play games do not require PlayStation Plus. For Catalog and Classics Catalog games, check the current plan terms and any listed removal date rather than assuming they follow monthly-game rules.
