PlayStation parental controls work best as a layered system: an adult family manager creates a separate child account, sets limits for that account, and reviews activity and requests. On PS5, parents can restrict age-rated games and online content, communication, privacy, web browsing, playtime and spending. The PlayStation Family app, PS5 settings and web account-management tools provide ways to manage supported controls. These settings can reduce risks, but they are not a guarantee: PlayStation warns that unrated content may not be covered, and parents remain responsible for supervision.

What are PlayStation family accounts and parental controls?

A PlayStation family is an account-management structure, not a single child lock on the console. An adult becomes the family manager, creates a separate account for each child using the child’s date of birth, and configures restrictions for that child account. PlayStation describes this as a way to tailor a child’s online experience to their age and maturity.

The child account is important because controls attach to the account, rather than simply limiting everyone who uses one console. A child who plays while signed in to a shared adult account may not be using the managed child profile to which the restrictions apply. Give each child their own account and make sure they complete email verification and sign in to that account.

The family manager can manage settings through PS5, web-based Account Management and the PlayStation Family app. Supported account settings carry across devices, so a change made through one supported route can affect the child’s account on another. The available controls and menu labels can vary by console generation, device and country or region; check what is shown for the child’s account and location rather than assuming every screen is identical.

How do I set up parental controls on PS5?

Start with separate accounts, then set restrictions for the child account and secure the adult account. PS5 offers family-management controls, while web Account Management and the PlayStation Family app provide other ways to manage supported settings.

  1. Use an adult account as the family manager. The adult account should be the one managing the family, not the account a child uses to play.
  2. Create a separate child account for each child. Enter the child’s date of birth accurately. Age information is part of how age-oriented settings are applied.
  3. Have the child complete email verification and sign in to the managed account. Check which account is active when the child uses the console; restrictions associated with one account do not mean every user profile has the same settings.
  4. Choose restrictions that fit the child. Set limits for games and apps, online content, communication, privacy, web browsing, playtime and spending as appropriate. Presets provide an age-oriented starting point, and individual controls can be customized.
  5. Secure the adult account and limit easy workarounds. PlayStation documents options to disable new-user creation and guest login, set a login passcode on the adult account, and set a system restriction passcode.
  6. Review settings and requests over time. Children’s needs change, and a request to access a game, use communication in a game or have extra playtime gives the family manager a chance to consider a specific exception.

Settings can be managed using PS5 settings, Account Management on the web or the PlayStation Family app. Exact paths and labels may differ by device, software version and region, so use the family and parental-control options displayed on the device rather than relying on a menu path that may not match your console.

What can parents restrict on a child account?

PlayStation’s controls cover several different kinds of access. A useful setup treats each category separately: blocking an age-inappropriate game does not automatically settle who can message a child, what the child can share, or how much they can spend.

Control area What it can help manage What to keep in mind
Games and apps Access according to age levels for PS5 and PS4/PS3 games and apps. Presets are age-oriented, but parents can customize individual settings. A child may request access to a restricted game.
Video and web content Access to Blu-ray and DVD content, web browsing, and online-content age filtering. Some online-content filtering is available only in certain countries or regions.
Communication Text messages, voice chat and communication features within games or connected services. A child can request an exception for communication in a particular game. Linked third-party apps and services may have their own settings.
User-generated content Whether a child can share or view content made by players, including screenshots, video clips, broadcasts, in-game creations and free-form profile text. Preset in-game messages are treated differently from free-form text and other user-generated content.
Privacy and contact Who can send invitations, messages or friend requests, see trophies, or send voice or chat invitations. The family manager can decide how much of the child’s privacy settings the child may change.
Playtime Play schedules and the amount of time a child can play, with an option to change the remaining time for the current day. The Family app can show recent playtime and let a parent respond to an extra-time request.
Spending Monthly spending from the family manager’s wallet by a child account. The documented default monthly spending limit is 0. A spending limit is a cap, not universal approval of each individual purchase.
Virtual reality Access to PlayStation VR or VR2. Check the controls available for the child’s device and location.

Can I block chat and messages on my child’s PlayStation account?

Yes. PlayStation provides communication and user-generated-content restrictions, as well as privacy controls that can limit who may contact a child. These settings are related but not identical: restricting communication can block sending or receiving certain content, while privacy settings help govern which players can initiate contact or invitations.

When Communication and User-Generated Content is set to Restrict, PlayStation says the child cannot send text messages or voice-chat with other players, share their own user-generated content, or see another player’s user-generated content. The restriction also covers linking selected third-party services and apps that provide communication or user-generated-content features. Examples of affected content include screenshots, gameplay clips, broadcasts, in-game creations and free-form text in profiles.

Preset in-game messages are treated differently from free-form messages, so do not assume that restricting communication removes every in-game signal or preset phrase. A child can request an exception for communication in a particular game; the family manager can review that request instead of opening up communication more broadly by default.

For contact and privacy, parents can manage who can send online-play invitations, see trophies, send messages or friend requests, and send voice or chat invitations. Depending on the configuration, the family manager can set privacy options, allow the child to change selected options, or let the child manage them while retaining visibility and notifications.

How do playtime limits and the Family app work?

The PlayStation Family app is a free mobile tool for managing key parts of a child’s PlayStation experience, including playtime, spending, messaging and privacy. It also gives parents a way to view selected activity and respond to requests from a phone.

The app can show whether a child is online, the game currently being played and playtime from the past week. Parents can receive or review requests for extra playtime, access to a restricted game, or permission to use in-game communication, then approve or decline. These features make it easier to handle a specific request without treating every restriction as all-or-nothing.

Playtime controls include schedules, and a family manager, parent or guardian can change “Playtime for Today” through the app or PS5. That option is useful when a one-day adjustment is appropriate; it does not require treating the regular schedule as a permanent change. The app’s activity view is a snapshot of the information PlayStation makes available, not a substitute for talking with a child about what they play and who they interact with.

Can I limit PlayStation spending?

Yes. Purchases made by a child account are paid for from the family manager’s wallet, and the family manager or an appointed guardian can set a monthly spending limit. PlayStation’s guidance documents a default monthly limit of 0, which means a parent should review the setting rather than assume that a child can spend simply because a payment method is associated with the adult account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A spending limit controls the amount a child account may spend from that wallet during the month. It should not be described as a universal request-and-approval prompt for each purchase: the documented control is a monthly cap and wallet arrangement, not guaranteed item-by-item parental approval. If the goal is no child-account spending, check that the limit remains at zero and review the account’s settings periodically.

Can my child request access to a blocked game?

Yes. When a child tries to access a restricted game, they may be able to send a request for the family manager to review. The manager can allow or decline it, making the restriction a controlled decision point rather than a promise that a title can never be considered individually.

Parents can also receive requests for extra playtime or permission to use communication in a particular game through the Family app. Consider the specific game, the child’s age and maturity, and the requested feature before deciding. An exception for one game or activity does not mean every other restriction has to be changed.

Can my child bypass PlayStation parental controls?

Controls are harder to evade when a child uses a separate managed account and the adult account and console are secured. PlayStation documents measures that reduce common routes around restrictions: disable new-user creation and guest login, set a login passcode on the adult account, and set a system restriction passcode.

Also verify that the child is signed in to the managed account and has completed email verification. If a child can switch to an unrestricted account or use guest access, account-level restrictions may not provide the intended protection for that session. Review the accounts available on the console and the family settings after changes to the console or household setup.

No control set can promise that a child will never encounter unsuitable material or behavior. PlayStation says not all content is rated and parental controls may not apply to unrated content. Its terms place responsibility on a parent or legal guardian to monitor the child’s access to PlayStation Network and communications. Talk with children about the platform’s Code of Conduct and how to block and report players, and review third-party apps or services linked to the account because they may have separate communication and content controls.

What do PlayStation parental controls not guarantee?

They are a set of useful boundaries and supervision tools, not a complete filter for everything a child can see or do online. Age ratings and online-content filters can help restrict rated material, but unrated content may not be covered. Regional availability also matters: some online-content age filtering applies only in certain countries or regions.

Likewise, restrictions on PlayStation communication do not necessarily configure the privacy or safety settings of every linked third-party service. Parents should review services the child connects and consider whether those services add chat, sharing or user-generated content. The platform’s own settings, age ratings and requests can support family decisions, but they cannot replace ongoing supervision and conversations about safe play.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use PlayStation parental controls without the Family app?

Yes. PlayStation also provides family and parental-control management through PS5 settings and web-based Account Management. The app is an additional phone-based option for supported settings and requests, not the only way to manage the family.

Do PlayStation controls filter every website or online video?

No. The controls include web-browsing and online-content options, but availability can depend on region, and PlayStation warns that unrated content may not be covered. Treat filtering as one layer of protection rather than a guarantee that every item is screened.

Will restricting communication remove preset messages in games?

Not necessarily. PlayStation distinguishes preset in-game messages from free-form text and other user-generated content, so the communication restriction should not be read as removing every preset message.

Can a parent let a child manage privacy settings?

The family manager can choose to control privacy settings, allow the child to change selected settings, or let the child manage them while retaining visibility and notifications. The available choices depend on the privacy configuration for the child account.
