Choose a PlayStation 1 optical-drive emulator (ODE) by motherboard revision first, then by storage interface, drive-retention requirements and installation skill. XStation is the straightforward microSD replacement for compatible PS1 boards; TerraOnion MODE costs more but adds SATA and USB options; ArcStation is the documented solderless choice; and PSIO is the main option when keeping the original optical drive matters. Published hardware and service prices range from $44.99 for an installation service to $259.99 for a MODE listing, before shipping, tax, storage and any console repairs.
What a PS1 ODE changes
An ODE replaces or intercepts the console’s CD subsystem. Instead of reading a pressed disc with the aging optical mechanism, the console loads a legally obtained disc-image file from solid-state storage. Depending on the design, the original drive is removed from the data path or remains usable alongside the ODE.
This is useful when a laser is unreliable, when you want faster access to a library, or when you want to avoid repeatedly handling valuable discs. It does not remove the need to identify the correct motherboard, prepare storage correctly or obtain image files lawfully. There is no software-only PS1 method that performs the same job; the options discussed here all require hardware installed inside the console, with different soldering demands.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Compatibility starts with the motherboard
Model names such as “fat” and “PSone” are not precise enough for ordering. Read the SCPH label on the console and identify the motherboard revision inside it. ODE boards use revision-specific flex cables, brackets or installation points, so a unit that fits one SCPH family may be unusable in another.

Board families named by the current products
| ODE | Documented PS1 coverage | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| XStation | Specific PS1 motherboard models matched by its installation boards and flex cables | Check the manufacturer’s compatibility list for the exact SCPH and board revision; the original CD path is disabled. |
| ArcStation | PS1 fat and PSone | PSone VMC and gamepad-reset features are unavailable without soldering. |
| TerraOnion MODE | PU-18 500x/550x PS1 family for the PS1 kit | The PS1 kit is not a universal fit for every SCPH revision. |
| PSIO | Many models through PU-22 | Compatibility varies; verify the exact board and current firmware requirements before buying. |
If the seller’s compatibility page does not explicitly list your board, stop before ordering. A return is not a substitute for a matching flex cable or installation board.
How the four main options differ
XStation: focused microSD replacement
XStation is designed as a replacement for a worn optical drive. It loads compatible disc images from a microSD card and supports multi-disc games. Its installation boards and flex cables are matched to particular motherboard revisions, and the installation is considered reasonably straightforward when the correct quick-solder board (QSB) is used. The trade-off is that the original CD drive is disabled rather than retained.
For a buyer who wants a PS1-only setup, broad compatibility within the listed models and a simple microSD workflow, XStation is the most direct choice. You still need to solder the board, and inexperienced work around the console’s DSP pins can cause permanent damage.

ArcStation: solderless, with PSone feature limits
ArcStation is listed as a solderless ODE for PS1 fat and PSone consoles. It loads games from an SD card, supports region-free play, and documents CUE/BIN, ISO and single-BIN images. A disc-queue function is documented for changing discs in a multi-disc title.
The product listing specifies a 1GB-or-larger card formatted as FAT32 or exFAT and recommends A1 or A2 low-latency cards. On PSone, virtual memory card (VMC) and gamepad-reset functions are unavailable unless you add soldering. That makes ArcStation the clearest choice when avoiding solder entirely is more important than having every convenience feature on a PSone.
TerraOnion MODE: more interfaces, higher cost
MODE’s PS1 kit is specified for the PU-18 500x/550x family. It supports microSD, SATA and USB storage, giving you more ways to build a library than a microSD-only design. ConsoleMods describes an installation approach similar to XStation and notes that the original optical-drive path is replaced.

MODE is attractive if you also value SATA or USB flexibility, or if you want an ODE platform used across more than one supported console family. It costs more than the PS1-focused alternatives. Current comparisons also report PS1 CD-audio glitches in the firmware available at the time of the comparison, so check firmware notes and user reports before treating it as the safest choice for audio-heavy games.
PSIO: retain the physical drive
PSIO combines a cartridge with an internal board. Its design can retain the physical optical drive while loading images from the cartridge, which is the key reason to choose it over XStation or MODE. It supports many models through PU-22, but compatibility is not uniform.
Availability is difficult, and the platform has firmware DRM requirements and documented compatibility issues. If keeping the CD drive is essential, verify that your exact board, cartridge and firmware path are supported and that you can obtain the hardware before planning an installation.

Published prices and the real installation budget
The following are listed asking prices, not an average installed cost. They were current catalog or manufacturer listings in 2026 and can change with stock, exchange rates and taxes.
| Item | Listed price | Stock or scope |
|---|---|---|
| XStation hardware | $119.99 | Stone Age Gamer catalog listing |
| XStation plus installation bundle | $179.99 | Stone Age Gamer catalog listing |
| XStation installation service | $69.99 | Service listing; hardware purchased separately |
| TerraOnion MODE | $259.99 | Stone Age Gamer listing marked out of stock |
| MODE installation service plus bracket | $44.99 | Service listing; hardware purchased separately |
| ArcStation | €150 | Product page marked out of stock; November 2026 restock announced |
| TerraOnion MODE plus PS1 kit | €222 | Manufacturer listing marked out of stock when crawled |
Add shipping, regional tax or VAT, an SD or microSD card, and any console repair or replacement parts. A $69.99 service fee does not mean a complete $69.99 installation; it is the labor component shown by that listing. Likewise, a €150 or €222 out-of-stock listing is not a guaranteed checkout price or delivery date.
Use this compatibility checklist before ordering
- Record the console identity. Read the SCPH model and open the console only as far as you can safely inspect the motherboard. Photograph the board markings so you can compare them with the ODE’s fit list.
- Match the board, not just the shell. Check whether your board is one of the revisions listed for XStation, the PU-18 500x/550x family required by the PS1 MODE kit, ArcStation’s PS1 fat or PSone coverage, or PSIO’s supported range through PU-22.
- Choose your drive policy. Select PSIO if retaining the physical drive is a requirement. Treat XStation and MODE as replacements that disable or remove the original optical-drive path.
- Assess your soldering ability. XStation and MODE require soldering. Fine-pitch DSP work can lift pins when excessive heat or force is used; beginners should use an experienced installer. ArcStation is the documented solderless route, subject to its PSone feature limits.
- Plan storage. ArcStation requires at least a 1GB SD card formatted FAT32 or exFAT and recommends A1/A2 low-latency cards. XStation uses a prepared microSD structure, including a
00xstationfolder containing firmware and game files. Use a reliable card and keep a backup of its contents. - Confirm image formats and disc changes. Check whether your library uses CUE/BIN, ISO or single-BIN files and how the chosen ODE handles disc queues. A multi-disc title may require selecting the next disc from the ODE menu rather than swapping a physical CD.
- Confirm stock and return terms. Several listed products or configurations were out of stock. Do not pay for installation until the installer confirms that your exact console revision and the hardware you are supplying are supported.
Installation: what the work involves
Professional installation
Professional labor is sensible when you have not performed fine-pitch console soldering. Give the installer the exact SCPH model, motherboard revision and ODE model. Ask whether the quoted service includes a bracket, flex cable, firmware setup, testing and return shipping; the published service prices do not establish that every service includes all of those items.

DIY installation
DIY work requires an appropriate soldering station, magnification, flux, ESD precautions and a way to verify continuity before powering the console. Follow the model-specific installation guide rather than a generic PS1 teardown. Do not force a flex cable or scrape traces to make a board fit. If a DSP pin lifts, stop and repair the board before applying power.
After installation, test the console with a known-good image, verify menu navigation, memory-card saves and audio playback, then test a multi-disc title. For an ODE that disables the original drive, confirm that you understand the change before permanently closing the console.
Preparing games and storage
Use lawful disc images
An ODE does not grant permission to download copyrighted games. Create or use images you are legally entitled to use in your jurisdiction, and keep the original discs or proof of ownership where local law requires it.
Organize the card for the ODE
Format the card exactly as the product documentation specifies. ArcStation accepts FAT32 or exFAT and documents CUE/BIN, ISO and single-BIN formats. XStation’s guide requires the 00xstation folder with firmware and game files. Keep filenames simple, avoid duplicate game names and eject the card safely to reduce corruption.
Multi-disc titles
For XStation, use its documented multi-disc support. ArcStation’s documented disc queue lets you queue the next disc from the menu. Create a clear folder structure and test the disc-change operation before starting a long game; a correctly named image that is not indexed by the menu can look like a compatibility failure.
Common problems and fixes
The console does not boot after installation
- Power off and reseat every flex cable and connector.
- Inspect for solder bridges, lifted DSP pins and damaged pads under magnification.
- Confirm that the board revision matches the installed ODE hardware.
- Restore the original drive or reverse the installation only after checking the model-specific guide.
The menu cannot see games
- Verify the card format: FAT32 or exFAT for ArcStation.
- Check that XStation’s
00xstationfolder and firmware files are in the required location. - Confirm that the image uses a supported CUE/BIN, ISO or single-BIN layout.
- Test a second known-good card; low-quality or failing flash media can mimic software errors.
Audio or disc changes fail
- Check that the image includes its cue sheet and track files where required.
- Update firmware only through the product’s documented process.
- For MODE, consider the reported PS1 CD-audio glitches when deciding whether the current firmware is acceptable.
- For PSone ArcStation installations, remember that VMC and gamepad-reset functions require soldering and are not available in the solderless configuration.
Which ODE should you buy?
- Choose XStation when you have a listed motherboard, want a PS1-focused microSD setup and do not need the original CD drive.
- Choose ArcStation when solderless installation is the priority and your PS1 fat or PSone is supported. Accept the PSone VMC and gamepad-reset limitations unless you are willing to add soldering.
- Choose MODE when SATA or USB storage and broader platform flexibility justify a higher price, and you have checked current firmware behavior for CD audio.
- Choose PSIO when retaining the physical drive outweighs the inconvenience of firmware DRM, availability problems and more complicated compatibility checks.
In every case, the motherboard check is the first purchase decision, storage preparation is part of setup rather than an optional extra, and the listed hardware price is only one component of the finished project.
