On a stock PlayStation Classic, each game has its own virtual memory card with up to 15 save slots, plus one separate Reset-button resume point. Original PlayStation memory cards cannot be inserted, and the console’s stock menus cannot change a game’s region. That last point matters because nine games on the international 20-game list are PAL versions, which run at 50 Hz and can feel slower than their NTSC counterparts.
The distinction is simple once you separate the systems: the virtual card stores saves made through a game’s own save menu; the resume point snapshots your current emulator session. The region is part of the game build Sony included, not a lock imposed by the mini console. This guide explains what each feature does, what happens when you change games or discs, and what unofficial modifications can—and cannot—change.
How do memory cards and save states work?
They are two different save systems. A virtual memory card holds a game’s ordinary in-game save files, while a Reset-button resume point lets you return to the suspended session where you left off. Sony documents both features in its 2018 PlayStation Classic FAQ and launch coverage.
Virtual memory cards: saves made inside a game
Each preloaded title has its own virtual memory card, with up to 15 save slots, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment. In practice, use the game’s own save option—at a save point, in a menu, or wherever that title permits—to create a traditional save. You can manage the title’s card from the console’s main UI. It is not a single card shared across all 20 games.

Sony’s term is “slots,” not the “blocks” used to describe original PlayStation cards. Original PS1 cards held 15 blocks of about 8 KB each, but that does not establish a conversion between those blocks and the Classic’s slots. Some original games use more than one block for a save; how that maps to the Classic’s 15 slots is not specified. Treat Sony’s stated limit as 15 slots per title rather than assuming a particular number of original-style saves will fit.
Deletion is permanent on stock firmware. Sony’s Justin Massongill said in the PlayStation Blog FAQ that deleted saves cannot be recovered. The Classic has no recycle bin or official cloud backup, and it does not connect to the internet.
Resume points: a snapshot of the current session
Press the physical Reset button on the console to leave a game and return to the main menu. Sony says this creates a restore point or Resume Point for that game; when you launch it again, you can return to that point. This is separate from the game’s virtual-card saves, and it is useful for resuming in the middle of a section rather than returning to the game’s last save location.

The stock system provides one resume point per game. It is an emulator save state, not a memory-card file, so do not treat it as a second in-game save or a portable backup. Sony’s public explanation does not establish how a stock resume point behaves through power loss or after unofficial changes to emulator settings. If the progress matters, make an in-game save as well whenever the game permits.
Can you use original memory cards with the PlayStation Classic?
No. The PlayStation Classic has no physical memory-card slot, and original PS1 cards are not compatible with it. Sony also says that only the PlayStation Classic’s included controllers are compatible; original PS1 and PS2 controllers and DualShock 4 are not supported by the stock console.
The front USB ports are for the Classic controllers, not a way to plug in an original memory card. The official mini controllers reproduce the original digital pad and do not have analog sticks or vibration. The console comes with two USB controller ports, but that does not make them general-purpose peripheral ports.

This differs from original PlayStation hardware. A PS1 memory card works with a PS1 and in the PS1 memory-card slots on a PS2; a PS2 MagicGate card does not work in a PS1. Those compatibility rules apply to the original consoles, not the Classic. Also separate card compatibility from save compatibility: a card itself is not region-locked, but game saves are usually tied to a disc’s product code. A save from one regional build may not appear in another build of the same game.

The cause is the regional version of the game installed on the console. The international 20-game list is not made up entirely of NTSC releases: Sony’s 2018 FAQ identifies nine PAL titles, which use 50 Hz timing rather than the 60 Hz associated with NTSC versions. The Classic’s stock firmware does not provide a region switch.
The nine PAL games on the international list are:
- Battle Arena Toshinden
- Cool Boarders 2
- Destruction Derby
- Grand Theft Auto
- Jumping Flash!
- Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
- Resident Evil Director’s Cut
- Tekken 3
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
Sony described the remaining titles on that list as NTSC versions of their original releases. The distinction is about the disc build supplied for each game, not a regional lock on the Classic’s HDMI output or on the console itself.
PAL games were authored around 50 Hz television timing. On the Classic, that can make motion, input cadence, and—in some titles—music tempo feel slower than a player expects from an NTSC version. IGN’s December 2018 guide characterized PAL games as running at around 80 percent of NTSC speed and called out Tekken 3 and Cool Boarders 2 as sluggish. That is IGN’s description of the experience, not a universal Sony performance specification; the precise effect varies by game.
The Classic outputs games in 4:3 and supports HDMI at 720p or 480p. Those output resolutions do not convert a PAL game into an NTSC game. In particular, there is no stock “Settings > Change Region” option. Region controls seen in later PS4 or PS5 PlayStation Classics catalog emulations belong to those products, not this mini console.

How to change regions on your PlayStation Classic
There is no supported stock-firmware procedure. The region is baked into the preloaded game build, so owners seeking NTSC timing must use an unofficial PCSX menu route or a community modification. These methods are not Sony features, and the published accounts do not establish whether forcing NTSC on a stock PAL title preserves that title’s virtual-card saves or resume point.

Unofficial PCSX menu with a USB keyboard
IGN’s December 5, 2018 guide, citing Retro Gaming Arts, described a route that does not require the add-games modification. It depends on a compatible USB keyboard; keyboard support is picky, so a keyboard that fails to open the menu does not mean the region setting is absent.
- Connect a compatible USB keyboard to a controller port and start the game.
- Press Escape to open the PCSX menu.
- Open Options and change Region from Auto to NTSC.
- If available in the menu, enable the FPS display and check whether it reports approximately 60 frames per second.
IGN reported that a Corsair K60 RGB worked in its account, while lower-end Logitech and Mac keyboards it tried did not. That is not a compatibility guarantee for every keyboard. IGN also warned that the trick’s effects on the console and save files were uncertain. Treat the change as an unofficial experiment, not a supported repair.
PCSX menu after an add-games modification
Android Central’s James Bricknell described a second path in May 2019, after installing add-games and hidden-menu modifications. The steps below apply to that modified setup, not to the stock game menu.
- Launch a custom or added game.
- Press X, then press Select + Triangle to open the PCSX menu.
- Open Options and set Region to NTSC.
- Press Square four times to return to the game.
Bricknell reported that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3, an added game rather than one of the stock 20, changed from 45–50 FPS to 58–60 FPS after the region change. That is one author’s observation on one modded game, not a benchmark for the Classic’s preloaded library or a guarantee of the same result on PAL titles.
What happens to saves if you change a game’s region?
Do not assume a save will transfer between regional builds. PulseGeek’s 2026 explanation of general PS1 save headers notes that SLUS and SCUS commonly identify North American releases, while SLES and SCES commonly identify European releases. A save associated with an SLES build will generally not load in the corresponding SLUS build unless the game explicitly supports cross-region loading.
That is a general PlayStation save-compatibility rule, not a test of changing the region setting on a stock Classic title. The specific behavior of its virtual-card slots and Reset resume point after forcing NTSC has not been established. Keep PAL and NTSC saves separate, make a clean in-game save on the build you intend to use, and avoid relying on a resume point after changing emulator settings.

What changes if you use AutoBleem or another USB modification?
Community modifications can add games, alternate launchers, memory-card tools, and extra save-state features. They are separate from Sony’s stock save system. A modded Classic may offer more flexibility, but the exact card and save behavior depends on the launcher, emulator core, and how the game is started.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →AutoBleem’s published feature list describes shared memory cards, per-game folders for games and save states, a Memory Card Manager/Editor, and custom cards that can be attached per game. Its version 0.5 notes say custom cards are hot-swapped when a game loads; the Sony UI editor continues to show the internal card, while the hidden PCSX menu shows an attached custom card. These are community project descriptions, not guarantees about stock firmware.
AutoBleem 0.7.1’s August 12, 2019 changelog says its MemoryCardManager could copy and delete saves between cards, that cards were copied to and from RetroArch when a PS1 game started in EvoUI, and that a new PCSX build included QuickSave/Load. The same changelog warns that AutoBleem resume points are not supported in RetroArch when launching PS1 games from EvoUI via Square. Do not assume that one launcher’s quick-save can be loaded by another emulator path.
Basic Bleemsync USB boot outline
Retronauts’ 2019 Bleemsync guide describes a USB workflow that begins with a compatible drive and a FAT32 format. The Classic can be picky about USB devices; community notes say older, low-power USB 2.0 drives in Player 2 often work better than USB 3.0 drives. This is setup guidance from the community, not a guarantee that a particular drive will boot.
- Format a compatible USB flash drive as FAT32 and name its volume
SONY. - Copy the Bleemsync folder structure to the root of the drive.
- With the console unplugged, insert the drive into controller port 2.
- Power on the console and follow the modification’s own setup directions.
Some later setups use an OTG cable on the rear power path after kernel-level modifications. NTFS and exFAT support belongs to certain modified configurations, not a stock FAT32 boot. Do not apply those filesystem expectations to an unmodified console.
What else should you know before changing hardware or saves?
The Classic is an offline mini console with 20 games stored internally, no disc drive, and no official way to add games. Its two controller ports are intended for the included pads. Sony’s stated power requirement is a 5 V USB source supplying at least 1.0 A; the USB cable is included, but the USB AC adaptor is not.

Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid originally span multiple discs. When a virtual disc ends, press the console’s Open button to advance to the next disc. Open does not create a save; in-game progress still goes to that title’s virtual memory card, so save through the game when possible before changing discs.
One other caution applies to modded setups: community reports mention adapters for using other controllers, but Sony’s compatibility statement is limited to official PlayStation Classic controllers. Verify an exact adapter’s compatibility with the Classic rather than assuming that support for original PS1 or PS2 hardware carries over.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do memory cards / save states work?
A memory-card save is created by the game and is meant to be loaded through that game’s own save system. A save state captures the emulator session at a particular moment, which is why it can resume mid-action but is less portable across emulator settings.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use my PlayStation memory card in another PlayStation?
An original PS1 memory card works in a PS1 and in the PS1 memory-card slots on a PS2. A PS2 MagicGate card is not a substitute for a PS1 card in a PS1.
Can I use a PAL save with the NTSC version of a PS1 game?
Usually not: regional builds commonly use different product codes, and saves are associated with those codes. PulseGeek’s 2026 overview notes that cross-region loading is rare unless a specific game explicitly supports it.
Does the PlayStation Classic have a disc tray?
No. The console has no disc drive; the Open button advances between virtual discs in supported multi-disc games such as Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid.
