They serve different devices and workflows, so there is no established accuracy winner. Google’s documentation describes Now Playing as a Pixel phone feature, not a native Pixel Watch feature.
Can you use Google Now Playing on a Pixel Watch?
Google documents Now Playing as a Pixel phone feature. It does not identify Now Playing as a built-in Pixel Watch feature. Pixel Watch support for music apps does not mean the watch runs the phone’s passive song-recognition service. See Google’s Now Playing instructions and Pixel Watch music-app guidance.
If you want to identify a song by initiating a lookup on your wrist, Shazam is the documented choice: Shazam and Apple describe support for Wear OS devices. Availability may depend on the watch model and region, and Apple does not provide a model-by-model Pixel Watch compatibility list in its Android Shazam instructions.
How the two song-identification workflows differ
| What you want to do | Better fit | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Recognize nearby music without opening an app | Google Now Playing on a Pixel phone | It can identify music in the background and show results in notifications, including while the phone is locked. |
| Start recognition from a Pixel Watch | Shazam for Wear OS | Open Shazam on the watch and initiate a lookup. The official sources do not establish that watch use duplicates the phone app’s unattended Auto Shazam behavior. |
| Keep identifying while using other Android apps | Shazam Auto Shazam on Android | Auto Shazam can continue matching music as you switch apps and save results to the Shazam library. This is documented for Android; continuous unattended operation on the watch is not established. |
| Review previously identified songs | Either | Google documents Now Playing history and favorites; Shazam saves identifications in its library. |
What happens when the phone is offline?
Now Playing starts with an on-device song library. Google says that when it cannot recognize a song locally, it may send a short digital audio fingerprint for a cloud search; it does not send raw audio or background conversations. The details are in Google’s explanation of Now Playing.

Shazam handles offline identification differently: on an offline Android device, it can create a fingerprint and match it against Shazam’s catalog after the device reconnects. The song must be in that catalog. Apple explains this in its offline Shazam guidance.
How to identify songs with each option
Use Now Playing for automatic detection on a Pixel phone
Enable Now Playing on your Pixel phone to let it recognize nearby music and display results. For a manual search, Google also documents options including the Now Playing app, Quick Settings, a widget, or a lock-screen shortcut. The available controls can vary by phone and software version; consult Google’s current instructions.

Use Shazam for a lookup from the watch
- Open the Google Play store on the watch and check whether Shazam is available for your device and region.
- Install Shazam, open it on the watch, and start a song identification when music is playing nearby.
- Use the Shazam app’s library to review saved identifications. For Android phone use, Apple also documents tapping the Shazam button for a lookup and enabling Auto Shazam when you want matching to continue while switching apps.
Apple’s Shazam Android and Wear OS guidance describes Wear OS support, but does not promise identical hands-free behavior across watches.
Is there an accuracy winner?
No directly comparable recognition test or shared success-rate statistic is established by the cited product documentation. Both tools can identify songs and retain results, but that does not show that one is more accurate. Choose based on where you want the lookup to happen: automatically on a Pixel phone, or when you trigger Shazam on a Wear OS watch.

Can you relay Pixel phone recognition to the watch?
A third-party Google Play app called Now On Wrist says it relays songs recognized by a phone to a Wear OS 3.0-or-higher watch. Its listing says it requires a phone with ambient recognition enabled and a compatible watch. This is a developer-described bridge, not a native Google Now Playing feature, and it is not necessary to use Shazam directly. Check the current app listing for compatibility and availability before installing.
