Google has confirmed that Pixel HiLight will gain more capabilities, including message notifications from favourite contacts, but it has not announced a release date or named the messaging apps involved. A September 29, 2026 report based on Android 17 QPR2 Beta 5 code also points to additional colours and messaging support. Those details are beta evidence, not features that every Pixel owner can use yet.
What new features are coming to Pixel HiLight?
Google’s August 13, 2026 Australia announcement says HiLight will eventually show message notifications from favourite contacts. The announcement does not specify when the function will ship, which messaging services will be supported, or whether all supported Pixel models will receive it simultaneously.
Tech Advisor reported on September 29 that Android 17 QPR2 Beta 5 code suggested an expansion from calls to messages and four additional colours. The report described the current palette as teal, yellow, pink, purple and white, while inferring possible blue, red and green additions from a screenshot. Because this is an interpretation of beta code rather than a published Google specification, neither the final colour list nor the messaging behaviour is confirmed.
What HiLight does on supported phones today
HiLight is a built-in light cue that appears when the phone is face down. Google documents two functions:

- Favourite-contact calls: a selected colour identifies calls from chosen contacts. Google says this works with Phone by Google and WhatsApp.
Google’s support documentation does not currently list message alerts as a generally available HiLight function.

HiLight is part of the phone’s hardware and software experience. A generic case, notification accessory or separate configuration tool cannot add it to an unsupported Pixel.

How to enable and configure HiLight now
- Open Settings.
- Tap System, then HiLight.
- Turn on the Gemini and/or calls options you want; these options are enabled separately.
- For a favourite-contact colour, update the Contacts app to its latest version, open the contact, and assign the available colour there.
HiLight is enabled by default with modes such as Flip to Shhh, Bedtime and Do Not Disturb. Changing HiLight behaviour for one of those modes can also change ring or vibration notifications while that mode is active.
If HiLight does not appear for a call
Check whether flash notifications are enabled. Google states that enabling flash notifications prevents HiLight from displaying for incoming calls. Also verify that the call is arriving through Phone by Google or WhatsApp, the contact is configured as a favourite, and the relevant HiLight call setting is on.

It is a planned capability, not a confirmed universal feature. Google has publicly used message notifications from favourite contacts as an example of what will be added over time. The company has not published an app list or technical requirements. The Android 17 QPR2 beta report indicates that Google is testing messaging support, but beta code can change or be removed before stable release.
When will the HiLight update arrive?
No public ship date has been provided. The August 13 announcement promises additional capabilities over time, while the September 29 beta report only suggests that a future regular firmware release is possible. Do not treat that report as a schedule. Check Google’s Pixel release notes and the HiLight support page after each Android or Pixel update for confirmation.

How to interpret the reported colour expansion
The currently documented colours are teal, yellow, pink, purple and white. Tech Advisor’s beta-code report described four possible additions and inferred blue, red and green shades from an image, but it did not establish a final Google palette. The number, names and availability of new colours may therefore change before release.

What to check before expecting the upgrade
- You own a Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL or Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
- Android and the Contacts app are updated.
- HiLight is enabled under Settings > System > HiLight.
- The desired Gemini or calls option is enabled separately.
- Flash notifications are off if you expect a call cue.
- You are relying on a published stable release note, not only beta-code coverage, for message support or new colours.
