For most everyday-use priorities, the Pixel 5 is the stronger specification-based choice: it pairs a main camera with an ultrawide, and lists more RAM, a larger display, and a larger typical battery capacity. Choose the Pixel 4 if you specifically want a telephoto camera or prefer a smaller screen. There is one major qualification for either phone in 2026: Google says both no longer receive Android version or security updates.

Pixel 4 vs Pixel 5 at a glance

Feature Pixel 4 Pixel 5 What it means
Rear cameras 12.2 MP main and 16 MP telephoto 12.2 MP main and 16 MP ultrawide Choose telephoto framing or the ability to capture wider scenes.
Display 5.7-inch OLED, up to 90 Hz 6.0-inch OLED, up to 90 Hz The Pixel 4 is smaller; both list a high-refresh display.
Typical battery capacity 2,800 mAh 4,080 mAh The Pixel 5 has more capacity on paper; a used phone’s battery condition affects its runtime.
RAM and storage 6 GB RAM; 64 GB or 128 GB storage 8 GB RAM; 128 GB storage The Pixel 5 has more RAM. Compare phones with the same storage capacity.
Google update status as of October 4, 2026 No longer receives Android version or security updates No longer receives Android version or security updates Neither is a currently supported choice for someone who needs ongoing Google updates.

These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not the results of a hands-on comparison. In particular, camera resolution and lens specifications do not establish which phone takes better-looking photos overall.

Which camera setup suits you?

The most meaningful camera difference is the secondary rear camera: the Pixel 4 gives you a telephoto view, while the Pixel 5 gives you an ultrawide view. Their listed main cameras share a 12.2 MP resolution, ƒ/1.7 aperture, and 77° field of view.

Pixel 4: a telephoto option

Google lists the Pixel 4’s second rear camera as a 16 MP telephoto with an ƒ/2.4 aperture and 52° field of view. It is the better fit if you want a dedicated tighter view for framing subjects from farther away, rather than stepping closer or cropping the main-camera image.

Pixel 5: an ultrawide option

The Pixel 5’s second rear camera is a 16 MP ultrawide with an ƒ/2.2 aperture. Google lists its 118.7° field of view when the RAW image file setting is enabled; RAW is off by default. This wider perspective is useful when a scene, group, or nearby subject is difficult to fit into the main camera’s view.

Video and stabilization specifications

Google lists rear video recording up to 4K at 30 frames per second for Pixel 4 and up to 4K at 60 frames per second for Pixel 5. The specification listings also describe optical and electronic image stabilization for specified rear-camera components. These figures describe listed capabilities; they do not measure video quality or stabilization performance in real use.

Which is better for everyday use?

On the listed hardware, the Pixel 5 has the more accommodating screen size, more RAM, and greater original battery capacity. Those advantages make it the more appealing specification-based choice for routine use, but they do not guarantee that a particular used Pixel 5 will feel faster or last longer than a particular Pixel 4.

  • Screen: Pixel 5 has a 6.0-inch, 1080 × 2340 flexible OLED display; Pixel 4 has a 5.7-inch FHD+ OLED display. Both list Smooth Display up to 90 Hz. Google notes that Smooth Display is not available for all apps or content.
  • Memory and storage: Pixel 5 lists 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage. Pixel 4 lists 6 GB RAM and either 64 GB or 128 GB storage, so check the exact configuration when comparing capacity.
  • Battery: Google lists typical capacities of 4,080 mAh for Pixel 5 and 2,800 mAh for Pixel 4. These are original-device specifications, not a promise of runtime from a used handset; battery age and condition matter.
  • Processor: The listings specify Snapdragon 765G for Pixel 5 and Snapdragon 855 for Pixel 4. Chip names alone are not a measured comparison of speed, and the available specifications do not establish which phone performs better in a particular task.

Important: neither phone receives Google updates

Google’s Pixel software update support page includes both Pixel 4 and Pixel 5 among the phones that no longer receive Android version updates or security updates. That makes support status a central consideration if you plan to depend on either phone as your primary device. A larger battery or newer camera option does not change that status.

What to check if buying one used

Google’s hardware specifications cannot tell you the condition of an individual second-hand phone. Before paying, check the specific listing and device rather than assuming the published battery capacity reflects its present condition.

  • Ask about battery health or real-world battery condition, and inspect the phone for damage.
  • Confirm the exact storage configuration, especially for a Pixel 4, which was listed with either 64 GB or 128 GB.
  • Check carrier compatibility, the seller’s reputation, and the return terms for that listing.

Google’s Pixel phone hardware specifications for earlier models lists the camera, display, memory, processor, and battery details used above.
