On November 12, 2013, Pivotal announced Pivotal One, an enterprise cloud application platform combining Pivotal CF—the company’s commercial distribution of Cloud Foundry—with data services for Hadoop, analytics, RabbitMQ messaging, and MySQL. It was software for building and running applications, not a physical cloud device or a consumer product.

What Pivotal One was

Pivotal described Pivotal One as a platform intended to help enterprises develop and operate data-centric applications. Its central application layer was Pivotal CF, which Pivotal presented as an enterprise distribution of Cloud Foundry. The 2013 launch announcement said Pivotal CF was available on VMware vSphere.

The platform joined an application runtime with services that applications could use. Pivotal’s announcement said its data services were ready to run on Pivotal CF; it did not make Pivotal One a single database or a single-purpose analytics product.

What the launch included

Layer or service Role in the 2013 announcement
Pivotal CF Pivotal’s commercial enterprise distribution of Cloud Foundry, described as the application platform layer.
Pivotal HD Pivotal’s Hadoop distribution.
Pivotal AX Analytics service.
Pivotal RabbitMQ Messaging service based on RabbitMQ.
MySQL service Database service for applications.

The launch announcement also described platform capabilities including horizontal application scaling, load balancing, DNS, automated health management, and logging. Those are vendor descriptions of the product at launch, not independent performance findings.

How Pivotal CF related to open-source Cloud Foundry

Cloud Foundry and Pivotal CF were related but not interchangeable names. VMware announced Cloud Foundry as an open-source platform-as-a-service in 2011. Pivotal CF was Pivotal’s commercial enterprise distribution of that project, packaged as the application layer of Pivotal One.

The Cloud Foundry Foundation says VMware donated the code when the independent foundation launched in January 2015. That later governance change concerns the open-source project; it does not change what Pivotal announced as its commercial product in 2013. What Pivotal promised—and what that means

Pivotal positioned Pivotal One as a way to shorten development-to-production cycles and simplify platform operations. Its 2013 announcement claimed delivery could be reduced “from months to days” and that applications could scale to hundreds of instances in seconds. Those were promotional claims from the launch, not independently audited benchmarks, so they should not be read as guaranteed outcomes.

The launch is best understood as a product and packaging announcement: an enterprise application platform plus data services intended to work with it. It does not establish measured productivity gains or comparative performance against other platforms.

How the product name changed

The product branding evolved after the Pivotal One launch. VMware said in September 2019 that references to Pivotal Cloud Foundry would evolve to Pivotal Platform. In May 2024, VMware described Tanzu Platform as drawing on experience from Pivotal Cloud Foundry and Tanzu Application Service. Broadcom support documentation uses “Tanzu Platform for Cloud Foundry” as an umbrella name for products formerly known as Tanzu Application Service and Pivotal Cloud Foundry. These names show a product lineage, not proof that every historical component or package is available today.

For the launch itself, the accurate name is Pivotal One, announced on November 12, 2013. Current product packaging and commercial availability can change; the historical names should not be treated as current purchasing guidance.

Why it was called a VMware spinoff

Pivotal’s launch announcement said the company had been formed from VMware and EMC about six months earlier. That corporate context helps explain the “VMware spinoff” wording, while the product story is specifically about Pivotal’s new platform and commercial Cloud Foundry distribution.
