There is no universal winner. Choose Pimax Crystal Pro if your priority is high-resolution PC VR, optional DisplayPort, and a manufacturer-designed path to 60 GHz wireless streaming. Choose Steam Frame if you want a SteamOS headset built primarily to stream from a gaming PC while retaining the option to run some software locally. Crystal Pro is planned for spring 2027 shipping, while Steam Frame pricing and availability were reported in September 2026, so timing may decide the purchase as much as specifications.

The comparison below separates announced specifications from independent measurements. Neither product has established side-by-side results for image clarity, comfort, tracking reliability, latency, battery life, or game-library compatibility.

Quick answer

  • Best fit for demanding PC VR simulation and a wired fallback: Pimax Crystal Pro. Pimax lists 2,880 × 2,880 pixels per eye, glass aspheric lenses, Mini-LED local dimming, eye tracking, optional DisplayPort, and support for 72, 90, and 120 Hz. These are manufacturer specifications, not laboratory or hands-on findings. Pimax’s product page provides the published specification list.
  • Best fit for a Steam-centered streaming setup: Steam Frame. PC Gamer describes it as a SteamOS, streaming-first headset that uses an included wireless adapter to stream from a PC and can also run some software on its Arm-based hardware. The reported details are secondary coverage, not a complete confirmation from Valve’s product page.
  • Best value depends on the configuration: Pimax announces Crystal Pro at $1,399, or $1,899 with its 60G AirLink bundle. PC Gamer reports Steam Frame at $1,059 for 256 GB and $1,299 for 1 TB, both with VR controllers. Taxes, shipping, accessories and final retail terms can change those totals.
  • Best decision today: map your actual use between wired PC VR, ordinary Wi-Fi streaming, 60 GHz line-of-sight streaming, and local headset software. Do not choose from pixel counts alone.

What the two headsets are designed to do

Pimax Crystal Pro: a PC VR headset with optional local use

Pimax describes Crystal Pro as a PC VR headset that can operate wirelessly or through DisplayPort, with limited standalone capability. Its product page identifies a Snapdragon XR2 Gen1 for applications that run without a PC, including some Android and OpenXR mobile software. That description does not establish a general-purpose standalone game library equivalent to a dedicated standalone platform.

The design is therefore PC-first. A gaming computer supplies the demanding VR rendering, while the headset receives frames over standard Wi-Fi, the optional 60G AirLink system, or an optional DisplayPort cable. The external 16,000mAh battery pack is part of the package rather than a battery integrated into the headset, according to Pimax.

Steam Frame: streaming-first SteamOS hardware

PC Gamer characterizes Steam Frame as a SteamOS headset intended primarily to stream games from a PC, while also allowing software to run locally on the headset. The reported platform uses a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 16 GB of RAM and either 256 GB or 1 TB of storage. Local execution uses an Arm processor, so a title being available in a Steam library does not automatically mean it will run locally on the headset.

That distinction matters. Streaming can give you access to the rendering power and broad compatibility of a desktop PC, but it makes network quality, adapter placement and the host computer part of the experience. Local SteamOS use can reduce dependence on a PC for compatible software, but the available catalogue and performance need to be checked title by title.

Published and reported specifications

The table combines Pimax’s own announced figures with PC Gamer’s November 2025 preview of Steam Frame. A specification is not a measurement of perceived clarity, comfort or reliability.

Pimax lists approximately 17 million total pixels, 35 pixels per degree and a 110-degree horizontal field of view for Crystal Pro. Those figures describe the panel and optical design on paper; they do not prove that text will look sharper, the edge of the image will remain clear, or glare will be lower than on Steam Frame.

Image quality and optics: what the numbers can and cannot tell you

Crystal Pro’s announced optical system

Pimax’s specification sheet combines high per-eye pixel count with QD-LCD/QLED panels, glass aspheric lenses and Mini-LED local dimming. It lists 576 dimming zones per eye and eye tracking for dynamic foveated rendering. In theory, more pixels can help with cockpit instruments and desktop text, while local dimming can improve dark-scene contrast. Those are potential benefits, not observed results.

  • VISUALS: 2880 x 2880 per eye resolution and 16.6 million pixels, enjoy the pinnacle of clarity
  • SCREEN TECHNOLOGY: QLED display, supporting local dimming and HDR, achieving high contrast and vivid colors
  • LENS: Glass aspheric lens, providing edge-to-edge clarity and reducing distortion
  • ULTRA-LOW LATENCY: Up to 120Hz, Experience minimal lag with high refresh rates, providing a fluid and responsive VR environment for immersive simulations
  • COMPATIBILITY: Seamlessly integrate with your existing SteamVR setup, including compatibility with controllers like the Valve Index Knuckles or HTC VIVE

Crystal Pro’s 35 PPD and 110-degree horizontal field of view are also manufacturer figures. PPD depends on how the lens presents pixels across the field, and field-of-view figures can be measured differently between vendors. Treat them as useful design targets rather than a direct ranking against Steam Frame.

Steam Frame’s reported pancake design

PC Gamer’s preview lists 2,160 × 2,160 LCD displays and pancake optics for Steam Frame. Pancake lenses are commonly chosen for a slimmer optical path, but the preview does not provide a controlled comparison of glare, edge clarity, geometric distortion or the usable sweet spot against Crystal Pro’s aspheric lenses.

Steam Frame’s reported 144 Hz mode is described as experimental. The established reported modes are 72, 90 and 120 Hz. A higher refresh option can be useful only when the headset, streamed frames, network and PC can sustain it; the existence of a mode is not evidence that every game will run at that rate.

What an independent review still needs to measure

  • Center and edge clarity when reading small text.
  • God rays, glare and contrast in bright and dark scenes.
  • Lens sweet spot and how often the headset must be repositioned.
  • Actual field of view and distortion at different eye positions.
  • Whether eye tracking remains reliable for foveated rendering across users.

No source used for this comparison supplies those side-by-side measurements, so a definitive image-quality winner would overstate the evidence.

Wireless, wired and latency considerations

Crystal Pro’s connection choices

Standard Wi-Fi streaming and a dedicated Wi-Fi adapter are included with Crystal Pro. Pimax’s third-generation 60G AirLink is an optional upgrade. The company advertises up to 6 Gbps and under 2 milliseconds of added latency for that kit, using two room antennas and two headset antennas with 2×2 MIMO. These are Pimax claims, not independently verified performance.

  • Unmatched Visual Acuity with 50 PPD: Aspherical lenses deliver 50 Pixels Per Degree, eliminating the screen-door effect for true edge-to-edge sharpness.
  • QLED & Mini-LED Display: 3840x3840 per eye with Local Dimming. Combines OLED-level blacks with QLED brightness via Mini-LED technology.
  • Expansive 140° Wide Field of View: Break free from tunnel vision,Ultra-wide 140° field of view expands peripheral vision, maximizing situational awareness in simulators.
  • Precision Inside-Out Tracking: Flexible tracking, ensures low-latency, responsive motion capture, allowing you to jump into the action instantly.
  • High Refresh Rate: Supports up to 90Hz (and beyond), ensuring buttery-smooth gameplay for fast-paced action and racing, for professionals and sim racers demanding absolute precision and immersion.

The 60 GHz band has a physical limitation: Pimax says it does not pass through walls. The FAQ says Wi-Fi serves as a fallback if the 60 GHz signal is lost. A practical installation therefore needs a clear path between the room antennas and the headset, and a suitable Wi-Fi network for fallback coverage. A multi-room setup or play area separated by walls may not receive the advertised 60 GHz behavior.

Crystal Pro also supports optional DisplayPort for wired PC VR. The DisplayPort cable is not listed as included in the standard package. Wired operation can remove wireless-network variables, but it adds a cable-management constraint and does not by itself guarantee a lower end-to-end latency than every wireless configuration.

Steam Frame’s streaming model

PC Gamer reports that Steam Frame includes a wireless adapter and is primarily intended to stream games from a PC. Its preview reports Wi-Fi 7, but the reviewed sources do not establish a comparable wired display mode. Do not assume that Steam Frame’s wireless implementation performs like Crystal Pro’s optional 60 GHz system; they use different hardware and software designs, and no controlled latency test is available here.

For either headset, network conditions include more than internet speed. The relevant path is the local connection between the gaming PC, adapter and headset. Wired Ethernet from the PC to the access point, a clear radio path, low congestion and correct channel configuration can matter more than the headline maximum throughput.

Standalone software and compatibility

When Crystal Pro can work without a PC

Pimax says Crystal Pro can run some Android and OpenXR mobile applications through its Snapdragon XR2 Gen1. This is a limited standalone function, not evidence that every PC VR title or a broad standalone catalogue will install and run. If you expect to travel without a gaming computer, verify each required application and its controller, tracking and performance support before ordering.

When Steam Frame can work locally

SteamOS gives Steam Frame a local software path in addition to streaming. PC Gamer’s reporting discusses compatibility and performance on an Arm processor, which means software built for desktop x86 hardware may require a compatible build, translation or streaming instead. A Steam purchase alone is not a guarantee of local headset support.

For buyers with a large existing PC library, streaming is the safer assumption until a specific title is confirmed for local execution. For buyers who want to leave the PC behind, the relevant question is not whether the headset is called standalone, but whether the applications, input methods and graphics settings they need are supported on that device.

Tracking, controllers, battery and accessories

Crystal Pro hardware in the announced package

Pimax lists SLAM 2.0 inside-out tracking and two ringed controllers. Lighthouse tracking is described as an option delivered through a swappable faceplate, which could suit users who already have compatible base stations or require that tracking ecosystem. No independent source establishes tracking volume, occlusion handling or controller accuracy.

The package includes an external 16,000mAh battery and a Wi-Fi dongle. Pimax also describes optional official prescription lenses and an MR faceplate with LiDAR depth sensing and full-color passthrough. These accessories can change fit, mixed-reality capability and total cost, so check compatibility and availability for the exact regional package.

Steam Frame package information

PC Gamer’s price report says both Steam Frame storage configurations include VR controllers. The reviewed coverage does not establish battery endurance under representative games, comfort with different face shapes, controller tracking reliability or the availability of prescription and mixed-reality accessories. Those omissions are important for a purchase decision and should not be filled with assumptions based on the processor or display specification.

Steam Frame, 1 TB $1,299 PC Gamer report from September 2026; includes VR controllers

Pimax’s FAQ also describes a $1 reservation and launch discounts, but a reservation is not the same as a completed purchase or a guaranteed delivery slot. Recheck the final price, tax, shipping charge, accessory contents and reservation terms before paying.

The apparent price gap narrows or widens depending on how you configure Crystal Pro. The base headset is closer to Steam Frame’s reported 1 TB price than the AirLink bundle is, while the optional 60G system adds a substantial separate cost. Conversely, Steam Frame’s reported capacities differ by storage tier, so compare the configuration that actually fits your software needs rather than the lowest advertised entry price.

Which headset fits each buyer?

Choose Crystal Pro when these conditions describe you

  • You primarily play demanding PC VR simulations, racing titles or productivity applications and value the highest announced per-eye resolution.
  • You want the option of DisplayPort rather than relying entirely on wireless streaming.
  • Your play space can support line of sight for a 60 GHz system, and you are willing to pay extra for AirLink’s advertised native-foveated-streaming design.
  • You may use Lighthouse tracking or need the announced eye-tracking and local-dimming features.
  • You can wait for a planned spring 2027 shipment and accept that launch timing and terms may change.

Choose Steam Frame when these conditions describe you

  • Your existing games are centered on Steam and you want a headset designed around PC streaming.
  • You prefer a lower reported entry price than Crystal Pro’s AirLink bundle and want controllers included in either storage configuration.
  • You value the option to run compatible software locally through SteamOS but understand that Arm compatibility must be checked per title.
  • You want to evaluate a product reported as available in September 2026 rather than wait for Crystal Pro’s planned launch window.

Wait for independent testing when these conditions describe you

  • You need predictable wireless latency for competitive play.
  • You are sensitive to lens glare, edge blur, headset weight or facial pressure.
  • You require reliable hand tracking, controller tracking or room-scale performance in difficult lighting.
  • You need a specific game, simulator, mod, OpenXR runtime or productivity application to work locally.
  • You cannot tolerate uncertain battery life or accessory availability.

Purchase checklist

  1. List your must-run software. Separate PC-only titles from applications you expect to run on the headset. Confirm local SteamOS compatibility for Steam Frame and Android/OpenXR support for Crystal Pro rather than relying on the word “standalone.”
  2. Choose your connection mode. Decide whether ordinary Wi-Fi is sufficient, whether you can provide a clear 60 GHz path, or whether Crystal Pro’s optional DisplayPort cable is essential.
  3. Budget the complete configuration. Include the headset, controllers, AirLink if desired, DisplayPort cable, prescription lenses, MR accessories, tax and shipping. Do not compare a base headset with a fully equipped bundle.
  4. Check the host PC. Pimax lists RTX 2070 or above as a minimum GPU and RTX 3080/RTX 4070 or above as recommended, while labeling other computer requirements as to be determined. Treat those GPU figures as Pimax guidance, not a complete system requirement.
  5. Measure the room. For AirLink, identify antenna positions and wall obstructions. For any wireless setup, plan the PC-to-network connection and keep the play area free of radio interference where possible.
  6. Verify current commercial details. Pimax launch pricing, reservation terms, accessories and spring 2027 timing are pre-release details. Steam Frame specifications, prices, stock and software support should be checked against Valve’s current material because the official hardware page was not readable in the reviewed coverage.

Questions that still need hands-on answers

A buying guide can identify the design trade-offs, but several decisive facts remain unverified. Independent reviewers should measure both headsets under the same PC, game, network and room conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • End-to-end motion-to-photon latency over each wireless mode, including fallback behavior.
  • Image quality through the entire lens, not just the quoted panel resolution.
  • Comfort, balance, facial-interface options and cable or battery ergonomics during long sessions.
  • Battery runtime while streaming and while running local software.
  • Tracking recovery after occlusion, low light or rapid controller movement.
  • Compatibility and frame-rate stability for the buyer’s specific Steam, OpenXR and Android applications.

Verdict

Buy based on architecture, not a specification-sheet shootout. Crystal Pro is the more clearly PC-VR-focused choice for buyers who want optional wired operation and are prepared to pay for a specialized 60 GHz link, but its shipping date and performance claims remain prospective. Steam Frame is the more natural choice for a Steam-centered household that wants streaming first and local software as a secondary path, provided the reported specifications and availability hold and the buyer accepts unresolved Arm compatibility questions.

If you cannot decide between those use cases, waiting for independent testing is rational. The missing evidence—clarity, comfort, tracking, latency, battery life and real software compatibility—will affect daily ownership more than the difference between the two headline resolution figures.
