If the Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy upgrade will not download, install the latest console and Pikmin 4 updates first, verify that the correct virtual game card is loaded, redownload the upgrade pack, restart the Switch 2, and look for “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” on the title screen. The upgrade pack does not replace the base game: an upgrade-pack purchase requires the full Pikmin 4 game.
Nintendo lists the Switch 2 Edition for release on November 12, 2026. It adds enhanced visuals, Dandori Academy, Oatchi voice commands through the console microphone and GameShare support. The US upgrade-pack listing estimates a 1.2 GB download, while Nintendo’s UK listing says TV-mode resolution can reach 4K. The procedures below separate download problems from entitlement, feature-access and save-data problems so you can choose the least risky fix first.
What the Switch 2 upgrade includes
Nintendo describes a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition as a bundle containing the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack. For Pikmin 4, the full edition therefore includes the base game plus the Switch 2 additions. Existing owners can buy the upgrade pack instead of purchasing the full bundle again, but the upgrade pack is not a standalone copy of Pikmin 4.

Nintendo’s official upgrade-pack listing says Dandori Academy will contain 72 stages over time. That figure describes the planned content listing, not a promise that every stage is available immediately on release. The same US listing gives an estimated 1.2 GB download size; the actual space and download time can vary with system data and network conditions.

The announced release date is November 12, 2026. If you are troubleshooting before that date, an unavailable listing or absent content may simply mean the upgrade has not been released in your region yet. Nintendo’s published US and UK details are not necessarily identical, so check the eShop region attached to your Nintendo Account.
Do these checks before changing save data
Most missing-upgrade cases are entitlement or version problems rather than damaged saves. Work through this order before deleting software, initializing the console or choosing an overwrite in the cloud-save menu.
- Confirm the release and purchase. Verify that the Switch 2 Edition or upgrade pack is available in your eShop region and that the Nintendo Account that bought it is being used on the console.
- Connect the Switch 2 to the internet. Open the console’s internet settings and run a connection test. Nintendo’s Pikmin 4 update guidance recommends placing the console within 10 feet of the wireless router while testing. If the test returns an error code, open Nintendo’s support article for that exact code rather than retrying the download indefinitely.
- Update the console. In System Settings, open System and choose System Update. Restart if the console requests it.
- Update Pikmin 4 itself. Highlight Pikmin 4 on the HOME Menu without launching it, press the + button, choose Software Update and then Via the Internet. Nintendo says the base-game update is required in addition to the upgrade pack.
- Load the right virtual game card. Open the HOME Menu’s Virtual Game Cards area, select the Nintendo Account and load Pikmin 4 on the Switch 2. A digital entitlement can exist on the account while the game is unavailable on the current console if its virtual game card is loaded elsewhere.
- Restart before testing again. After the update and entitlement changes finish, restart the Switch 2 and launch Pikmin 4 once. This forces the software to recheck the installed content without risking a save overwrite.
Fixing an upgrade that will not download or install
The eShop does not show the upgrade
First check the date, region and ownership conditions. The upgrade is tied to the full Pikmin 4 game, and Nintendo’s announced Switch 2 Edition release date is November 12, 2026. If you own only an unrelated demo or a different account purchased the game, the upgrade offer may not appear for the account currently viewing the eShop.

For a digital copy, close Pikmin 4, open Virtual Game Cards from HOME and load the game on this Switch 2. Then reopen the eShop with the purchasing account. Do not buy a second copy until you have verified which account owns the base game and which account is signed in.
The download starts and then fails
- Run the internet connection test again with the console near the router, following Nintendo’s 10-foot recommendation.
- Check that the Switch 2 has enough free storage for the estimated 1.2 GB upgrade download plus temporary installation space. Nintendo’s figure is an estimate, so leave additional room rather than treating 1.2 GB as an exact requirement.
- Pause other downloads and close software that is running. Resume Pikmin 4 from the HOME Menu.
- If the test reports an error code, follow Nintendo’s article for that code. The code-specific remedy is more reliable than changing unrelated network settings.
- After the connection is stable, highlight Pikmin 4, press +, choose Software Update and install the latest base-game update before trying the upgrade pack again.
The pack says it is installed, but the game still looks unchanged
Redownload the upgrade pack from the Nintendo Account that purchased it. On the Switch 2, open Nintendo eShop, select the account icon, open the account’s redownload list and choose the Pikmin 4 upgrade content. If the title is digital, load its virtual game card first. When the redownload completes, restart the console and launch the game.
Do not judge installation only by the download notification. Nintendo’s support wording says the HOME Menu icon is updated to include “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” when an upgrade pack is installed. Check that label, then check the title screen inside Pikmin 4. If neither label appears, the console is still running the base version or the entitlement has not been recognized.

The game card version does not trigger the upgrade
With a physical copy, insert the original Pikmin 4 game card into the Switch 2 and install the latest game update. The upgrade pack is separate digital content, so the card by itself does not supply the Switch 2 additions. Confirm that the Nintendo Account purchasing the upgrade is on the console, download the pack, and keep the card inserted when starting the game if the base game requires it.
When Pikmin 4 launches but new features are missing
If Pikmin 4 starts normally but Dandori Academy, enhanced visuals, Oatchi voice commands or GameShare are absent, treat the symptom as a version or entitlement mismatch. Follow this exact sequence:
- Update the Switch 2 through System Settings > System > System Update.
- Highlight Pikmin 4 on HOME, press +, select Software Update and install the latest update via the internet.
- For a digital purchase, open Virtual Game Cards and load Pikmin 4 on this console.
- Redownload the upgrade pack from the purchasing Nintendo Account.
- Restart the console and start Pikmin 4 again.
- Verify that the HOME Menu icon and the in-game title screen identify the software as “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.”
The feature checks have different implications:
- Dandori Academy: It is part of the Switch 2 upgrade content. If it is missing while the title screen still shows the ordinary version, the pack is not being applied.
- Enhanced visuals: These are delivered by the Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo’s UK information says TV-mode resolution can reach 4K; that is a maximum listed capability, not a guarantee that every scene renders at 4K.
- Oatchi voice commands: The feature uses the Nintendo Switch 2 console microphone. Check the feature on the Switch 2 itself; it is not expected to operate on an original Switch.
- GameShare: It is an announced Switch 2 Edition feature. Both the software version and the participating hardware must support the GameShare session.
Inserting the same card in an original Nintendo Switch runs the ordinary Switch version. The base game can be accessed on that console, but Switch 2-exclusive enhancements require Nintendo Switch 2. A missing enhancement on an original Switch is therefore a hardware limitation, not evidence that your save or purchase is broken.

Move Pikmin 4 progress from Switch to Switch 2 safely
Use Nintendo’s save-data transfer or cloud-save process before starting substantial new progress on the second console. The critical rule is to identify which copy is newest before accepting any replacement prompt. Switch 2 Edition save data can be accessed on a Switch, but the Switch 2-only enhancements still require Switch 2 hardware.
If both consoles are available
- On the original console, finish the latest session and make sure the game has saved. Do not start Pikmin 4 on the Switch 2 until you have prepared the transfer or downloaded the current cloud copy.
- Use the console’s save-data transfer tools to send Pikmin 4’s save from the old Switch to the Switch 2, following the on-screen Nintendo instructions.
- If you use cloud backup instead, upload the latest save from the old console, then open Save Data Cloud on the Switch 2 and download that backup before playing.
- Launch Pikmin 4 on the Switch 2 and verify the file, story progress and other expected data. Only then continue playing.
Understanding “backup save data was created separately from the save data on this console”
Nintendo says this conflict can occur when you backed up a save on one console and then played on another without first downloading the cloud copy. The cloud backup and the local console file are now different versions.

Nintendo warns that an overwrite cannot be recovered. Compare the dates and the actual progress represented by each copy before selecting either option. If you are unsure, stop at the conflict screen and do not confirm an overwrite; determine which console was used most recently and which file contains the latest story, collectibles and other progress.

After resolving the conflict
Launch Pikmin 4 once and inspect the save slots. If the expected file is present, close the game normally so the selected version is written to the console. Create a new cloud backup afterward if you use cloud storage. For future console changes, Nintendo’s advice is to download the latest cloud backup first, before playing on another console; that prevents a second local file from diverging silently.

The full edition is the simpler choice for someone who does not already own Pikmin 4. An existing owner generally needs the upgrade pack rather than another full copy, but the account must still hold access to the original game. Nintendo’s bundle definition is the reason an upgrade-pack download alone cannot launch as a complete game.
Do not confuse the Switch 2 upgrade with the December 2025 game update
Nintendo’s December 16, 2025 Pikmin 4 update added features to the game itself, independently of the later Switch 2 Edition content. It introduced three creature activity levels—Relaxed, Normal and Fierce—plus Field Camera and Decor Pikmin functions, new controls and Roll Over.
Roll Over and an existing completed file
Roll Over starts a new playthrough while carrying some data from a file that has cleared the story. On the file-selection screen, select an empty Rescue Database to begin it. This is game-update behavior, not a sign that the Switch 2 upgrade failed.
An older save affected by the update
Nintendo instructs players with an affected save created before the December 16, 2025 update to reload it from the file-selection screen after updating. Reloading the file is separate from transferring it between consoles and does not replace the cloud-conflict decision described above.

Preventing another failed upgrade or save conflict
- Install the latest Pikmin 4 update before troubleshooting the upgrade pack. Nintendo explicitly requires the base-game update in addition to the pack.
- Keep the Switch 2 near the router during the connection test and record any returned error code before changing settings.
- For digital ownership, check the active virtual game card whenever a title appears unavailable after moving between consoles.
- After installing an upgrade, verify the HOME Menu icon and title-screen edition label rather than relying only on a download-complete notification.
- Before playing on a different console, download the latest cloud backup. This keeps the local file aligned with the backup and avoids the separate-save warning.
- When a cloud conflict appears, do not choose an option simply to dismiss the message. Decide whether the cloud or console copy has the latest progress first.
These checks resolve the common download, launch and save-data paths without deleting Pikmin 4 or accepting an irreversible save overwrite. If a Nintendo connection error remains after following its code-specific guidance, or the correct edition label never appears after a successful redownload, contact Nintendo Support with the console, account and error details ready.
