Start by finishing the opening tutorial, growing a dependable supply of Pikmin, and learning to divide jobs between your explorer, Oatchi, and the squad. Pikmin 4 is built around a repeating loop: grow Pikmin, pluck and organize them, scout hazards, fight, carry treasure, gather construction materials, rescue crew, and return to your ship before the day ends. The best squad is not a permanent color formula; it is the group whose abilities match the hazards and tasks in the area you are entering.

What to do first in Pikmin 4

The opening tutorial teaches the controls and the basic expedition rhythm. Complete it rather than rushing past the explanations, because nearly every later objective combines the same fundamentals in a different environment.

Learn the core loop

  1. Grow Pikmin. Collect pellets and defeated wildlife, bring them to an Onion, and wait for new Pikmin to appear.
  2. Pluck them. Pull sprouts from the ground so they join your available roster.
  3. Regroup. Use the whistle to call nearby Pikmin back into your active group and to check that none are waiting behind.
  4. Scout before committing. Look for fire, water, electricity, poison, ice, crystals, darkness, flying enemies, and narrow routes before choosing a squad.
  5. Assign jobs. Send Pikmin to fight, carry treasure, remove obstacles, dig, or gather materials while you and Oatchi handle another task.
  6. Return safely. The in-game day has a time limit. Finish nearby work and head back to the ship before the day ends.

Nintendo summarizes the time pressure this way: “Every in-game day brings different adventures, but there’s only so much you can do before you must return to the safety of your ship.” Treat that as a planning rule, not a reason to panic. A short, completed route is more valuable than a distant treasure left in danger at sunset.

Establish a base supply

At the beginning of an area, grow enough Pikmin to give yourself options instead of spending the entire day with only the first few sprouts. Pluck them, then use the whistle to form one tidy group. A mixed group is useful while scouting, but do not carry every type into every fight. Once you identify the next obstacle, dismiss the types that cannot contribute and bring forward the specialists you need.

Use the Rescue Command Post as your planning hub

Save at the Rescue Command Post, review what the current objective requires, and decide which jobs must be completed before you leave. Nintendo’s Fresh Recruits guidance also highlights Oatchi’s commands, scent-finding, and the X-button option for automatic squad creation. Automatic creation is a quick starting point; inspect the resulting group and adjust it for the hazards ahead.

How to build a Pikmin squad

Build a squad by job, not by a fixed color ratio. Before selecting Pikmin, answer three questions:

  • Which hazard blocks the route? Fire, water, electricity, poison, darkness, ice, crystals, or an aerial enemy may determine your minimum type.
  • What must the squad do? Fighting, carrying, digging, breaking a route open, lifting an obstruction, or solving a puzzle can require different specialists.
  • How much risk can you accept? Heavy or slow Pikmin may be ideal for a difficult object but awkward when you need to retreat quickly.

Carry a small core of generally useful fighters, then add the specialists required by the next room or route. When the objective changes, change the squad too. There is no advantage to keeping a type in the group after its job is finished.

Pikmin type reference

Type Best uses Important limitation or trade-off
Red Resisting fire and leading attacks; Nintendo describes them as a strong first line of attack. They do not solve water, electricity, poison, or other non-fire hazards by themselves.
Blue Working on land and in water, including carrying treasure or fighting in wet areas. They are the dependable water option, but a water-safe squad still needs other types for separate hazards.
Yellow Handling electrified gates and currents, digging, and reaching high targets because they can be thrown higher. Use them for electricity and elevated targets rather than treating them as universal fighters.
Ice Freezing enemies and freezing a body of water so other Pikmin can cross. Freezing is a tactical tool; once the route or target changes, another type may be more efficient.
Glow Exploring darkness and forming a bright ball that can stun enemies. They are most valuable where darkness or a stun opportunity is part of the problem.
Purple One Purple Pikmin has the strength and weight of 10 regular Pikmin. They can stun and carry heavier objects. They move more slowly, so their power costs speed and can make quick repositioning harder.
Rock Smashing crystals and dealing with large enemies; they are heavy and unbreakable. Their weight is an advantage for impact and durability, not a reason to use them for every carrying job.
Winged Lifting obstructions, carrying over water, and fighting flying enemies. They are specialized for air and water-crossing routes; ground hazards still need another answer.
White Moving quickly, using poison, and tolerating toxic environments better than other types. Bring them when speed or poison matters, not simply because they are fast.

Examples of practical squad decisions

If an electrified gate is the next mandatory route, Yellow Pikmin belong in the group before you think about carrying capacity. If the route then enters a flooded section, add Blue Pikmin or switch the group once the gate is open. A crystal barrier calls for Rock Pikmin, while a high target may justify Yellow Pikmin because of their throwing arc. A dark cave favors Glow Pikmin, and a toxic passage favors White Pikmin. For a heavy treasure, Purple Pikmin can shorten the carrying job, but keep enough agile Pikmin available to respond to enemies and changing routes.

Using Oatchi effectively

Oatchi is a trainable Rescue Pup and a second way to manage work. He can help with obstacles, carry Pikmin, receive commands, and follow a scent when you need direction. Think of him as a mobile work platform rather than simply another attacker.

Give Oatchi a separate job

When you find two nearby objectives, keep your main group on the safer or more complex task and send Oatchi toward the other. He can carry Pikmin to a work site, help with an obstacle, or hold a group while you scout. This reduces idle time and lets you complete a short route before the day expires.

Use scent when the route is unclear

If you know the general target but cannot see the path, use Oatchi’s scent command. Follow the resulting lead instead of wandering through hazards with your full squad. Scent is particularly useful after a fight or detour, when the original route is no longer obvious.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Regroup after every split

After Oatchi finishes a command, approach and use the whistle to bring waiting Pikmin back into the active group. Make a headcount before entering the next room. A missing carrier is easy to overlook when the screen is busy, and the whistle is the quickest way to restore control.

How to collect treasure without losing Pikmin

Treasure carriers are vulnerable because they are occupied and move along a fixed route. The safest beginner rule is simple: clear nearby enemies before assigning Pikmin to carry. Nintendo Life also recommends this order of operations for new players.

  1. Scout the full carrying lane. Check the destination and the path between it and the base, including water, fire, electricity, poison, crystals, and corners where an enemy could ambush carriers.
  2. Defeat or bypass threats first. Do not start a long carry while an enemy is still patrolling the route.
  3. Choose carriers for the object. Use Purple Pikmin when weight is the priority, Blue or Winged Pikmin when water is involved, and another specialist when the route has a hazard.
  4. Watch the carriers until the job is secure. Follow them far enough to confirm that the route is clear, then return to your other task.
  5. Whistle when work ends. Call waiting Pikmin back before moving to a new objective or entering a cave.

If a carrier group repeatedly disappears, the problem is usually not the treasure itself but the route: an uncleared enemy, an incompatible hazard, or a group left outside your view. Shorten the route by clearing the area in stages, or assign Oatchi to supervise one job while you handle another.

Planning each in-game day

Every expedition advances several forms of progress at once. Rescuing crew expands the Rescue Corps, repairing the ship supports the wider mission, treasure produces Sparklium, materials enable construction, and caves or other challenges open new discoveries. A good day links those systems instead of chasing a single distant object.

Use a short-route plan

  1. Choose a nearby anchor objective. Pick a crew rescue, obstacle, cave entrance, or cluster of treasure within a manageable distance.
  2. Clear hazards on the way. Removing a route blocker first makes later carrying and regrouping safer.
  3. Split labor. Keep your strongest combat or puzzle group with you while Oatchi and spare Pikmin gather materials or work on a second nearby task.
  4. Finish carries before the final part of the day. Long transports are the jobs most likely to run past the safe return window.
  5. Return to the ship with time remaining. Do not start a new distant fight when your current work is already complete.

When to explore caves

Caves and other challenges are worth entering when your squad includes the types needed for their visible hazards and you have enough time to complete a meaningful segment. If the entrance reveals a hazard for which you have no answer, leave, grow or retrieve the appropriate type, and return with a plan. Entering unprepared can strand carriers and consume the rest of the day without advancing the route.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes

Taking one color mix everywhere

Symptom: A gate, pool, crystal, or poison cloud stops the group immediately. Fix: Read the environment first, then swap in the specialist that answers the obstacle. Squad composition should change as the objective changes.

Starting a carry before clearing enemies

Symptom: Pikmin carrying treasure are attacked while you are fighting somewhere else. Fix: Clear the entire nearby lane, then assign carriers and watch the first part of their route.

Leaving Pikmin behind

Symptom: Your visible group is smaller after a split or command. Fix: Return to the work site and blow the whistle. Use the whistle again before entering a cave or ending the day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring movement trade-offs

Symptom: A heavy group cannot reposition quickly, or a fast group cannot move a large object. Fix: Use Purple Pikmin for strength when weight is the bottleneck, then switch to faster types for scouting, combat positioning, or the next route.

Overcommitting late in the day

Symptom: A distant objective remains unfinished as the return window approaches. Fix: Stop, call the squad together, complete the nearest safe task, and return. The next day can begin with a better squad and a known route.

A repeatable routine for new players

Use this checklist whenever you enter a new area:

  • Save or review plans at the Rescue Command Post.
  • Grow and pluck a reserve of Pikmin.
  • Use the whistle to form one controlled group.
  • Scan for the next hazard and identify the required type.
  • Assign Oatchi a separate, nearby task when practical.
  • Defeat enemies before sending carriers through their lane.
  • Check the group after every command, carry, and split.
  • Spend remaining time on nearby treasure and construction materials.
  • Return to the ship before the day ends.

This routine keeps the important decisions in the right order: safety first, specialization second, efficiency third. As you rescue crew, repair the Rescue Corps ship, collect Sparklium, and unlock more areas, the same process continues to work because it is based on hazards and jobs rather than a fixed roster.

Quick decisions before you leave the base

Question Decision
Is the next route on fire? Bring Red Pikmin and avoid sending other types into the flames.
Does it cross or enter water? Use Blue Pikmin; consider Winged Pikmin when carrying over water is the task.
Is electricity blocking progress? Bring Yellow Pikmin for electrified gates and currents.
Are crystals or a large enemy in the way? Use Rock Pikmin for smashing and heavy impact.
Is the space dark? Use Glow Pikmin and their stunning bright-ball ability.
Is poison or toxic terrain involved? Use White Pikmin, which tolerate toxic environments better than other types.
Is the object unusually heavy? Use Purple Pikmin, accepting their slower movement.
Is the target high or airborne? Use Yellow Pikmin for high throws or Winged Pikmin for aerial enemies and lifted obstructions.
