The right creature-collector game depends on what you want a second player to do. Choose Temtem for a friend joining the campaign online, Cassette Beasts for local shared exploration, Pokémon Scarlet or Violet for a mostly solo adventure with optional group activities, or Palworld if collecting creatures should sit alongside survival, crafting, and building. These modes are not interchangeable: local wireless is not the same as couch co-op, and online multiplayer does not automatically mean a shared campaign.

| Temtem | Online campaign co-op | Friends can catch creatures, complete routes, face leaders, and fight in dual battles; the world is always online. | Oct 2026 |
| Cassette Beasts | Local shared exploration | Local co-op exploration, transformation, and fighting; online features are separately described as trades, 1v1 battles, and cooperative Rogue Fusions. | Oct 2026 |
| Pokémon Scarlet or Violet | Solo exploration with optional group activities | Two to four players can explore, trade, battle, and take on Tera Raids online or over local wireless; local players need separate systems and copies. | Oct 2026 |
| Palworld | Creature collecting combined with survival | Its listing includes single-player and online co-op alongside survival, crafting, and building. | Oct 2026 |
These are matches for different needs, not a ranking. The central question is not whether a title has multiplayer, but what your second player can actually do—and what equipment or connection each of you needs to do it.
What kind of co-op do you actually want?
Start with the activity you expect to share, not the word “multiplayer” on a store page. In creature-collector games, a second player might share the same local adventure, join a story campaign online, meet you for selected activities, or help run a survival world. A game can support one of those arrangements without supporting the others.
- Shared local adventure: Both people explore and fight together in the same local session. Confirm whether this means one shared screen or a connection between separate devices.
- Online campaign co-op: A friend joins story activities such as routes and major encounters. Look for explicit descriptions of campaign progress, not just online battles or trading.
- Online activities: Players meet for specific features—such as trading, competitive battles, raids, or co-op encounters—without necessarily sharing the whole story.
- Survival-world co-op: Players gather, build, craft, and deal with survival systems together, with creature collection as one part of a broader loop.
Also separate three questions that are easy to blur: Can you play alone? Can you play without an internet connection? Can you bring another person into the same activity? For instance, a game can have a solo mode but still require an always-online connection, or have local multiplayer that requires a separate device for each player.

It also helps to be precise about what “together” means for your group. Do you want to progress through the main adventure side by side, or is it enough to trade creatures, test teams in battles, and join occasional group encounters? Do you expect to sit on one couch, or will each player connect from a different home? Those answers can rule out a game more quickly than a genre label can. If the shared campaign is non-negotiable, prioritize a publisher description that names story activities, routes, or leaders. If drop-in activities are enough, specific support for raids, trades, or co-op encounters may meet the need.
Which game fits each play style?
These are conditional recommendations rather than a universal ranking. The best fit is the one whose documented multiplayer matches how you and your friend intend to play.
Temtem: choose it for an online campaign with a friend
Temtem is the clearest match here if you want a friend to participate in the adventure rather than only meet for side activities. Its publisher describes co-op in which friends catch Temtem, complete routes, confront leaders, and fight together in dual battles. That makes it a better fit for a shared online journey than a game whose online features are limited to trading or selected encounters.

The important trade-off is the connection requirement: the publisher describes Temtem as an always-online world. “I’m playing solo” does not mean “I can play offline” in this case. If reliable internet access is not part of your usual play setup, make that a deciding factor before buying.
That requirement matters even if your friend is not available every time you play. A solo session is still taking place in a world described as always online, so this is not the safer pick for someone who wants to take a console somewhere without internet or avoid a persistent connection. Choose it when the online campaign is the point and your connection setup is compatible with that expectation.
Cassette Beasts: choose it for local shared exploration
Cassette Beasts explicitly describes local multiplayer in which a friend can explore, transform, and fight alongside the player. If your priority is playing together in person in a creature-collecting, turn-based RPG, that is a more direct match than assuming a game’s wireless or online modes amount to couch co-op. Its battles also include a form-fusion system.
Do not assume the local experience carries over unchanged to online play. The separately described online features are trading monster tapes, 1v1 battles, and cooperative Rogue Fusion encounters. Those are specific online activities; they do not establish that two players can complete the entire campaign together over the internet. If online story co-op is essential, look for an explicit campaign description before choosing it.

In practical terms, decide whether you will mostly play in the same room or need to connect across the internet. The local description specifically supports exploration together; the online listing describes a narrower set of shared activities. That distinction makes Cassette Beasts a strong candidate for a local session, but not a safe assumption for a remote, start-to-finish campaign.
Pokémon Scarlet or Violet: choose it for a self-paced solo adventure with group activities
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are a fit if you want to explore and catch Pokémon at your own pace, then bring other players into supported group activities. Nintendo Support describes two to four people exploring, trading, battling, and challenging Tera Raids online or over local wireless. That is meaningful multiplayer, but it is not evidence that friends jointly complete every story battle.
Local wireless has a practical cost: each participant needs an individual Nintendo Switch system and a copy of the game. An extra controller for one console does not meet that requirement. Online play has separate account and service conditions, detailed below. If you want a low-friction shared-screen game, do not interpret “local” in Nintendo’s description as same-screen couch co-op.
The two versions can play together, according to Nintendo’s guidance, so friends do not need matching versions for that reason. However, version-dependent species differ. If collecting particular Pokémon is part of your plan, account for the version each person owns rather than assuming both copies offer identical species. The multiplayer specification is two to four players for the listed group activities; it is not a general promise that every part of the adventure works as a four-player campaign.

Palworld: choose it when collecting is part of a survival game
Palworld combines collecting Pals with survival, crafting, and building. Its listing identifies both single-player and online co-op, so it suits players who want creature-collecting alongside a broader survival loop rather than a campaign centered only on catching and battling.
The listing does not establish same-screen co-op or universal cross-play between every platform combination. Platform pairing and server details can change with game versions. Pocketpair’s server guide is labeled version 0.5.0, so it should not be treated as a guarantee for a current platform pairing. The U.S. PlayStation listing says PlayStation Plus is required for online play on that platform; check the current listing and requirements for the edition and region you plan to use.
For a group, the relevant question is whether you want shared survival and building as much as creature collecting. If crafting and maintaining a world are appealing, the broader loop may be a better fit than a game focused mainly on routes, collection, and battles. If your main requirement is a shared story campaign or a particular cross-platform pairing, verify that exact setup instead of treating the general “online co-op” label as an answer.

How these choices were selected
The recommendations follow the described play structure, not sales figures, popularity claims, or hands-on performance. The deciding criteria are whether solo play is supported, whether offline play is established, what the second player actually does, how much of the campaign is explicitly shared, and whether platform or membership requirements could change the purchase decision.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe documented player-count detail worth keeping in mind is Nintendo Support’s two-to-four-player specification for the listed Scarlet and Violet group activities, verified in October 2026. It describes supported group play, not a genre-wide benchmark or a universal campaign size. No price comparison is included here: the relevant known cost issue is whether a player needs an additional system, game copy, online membership, or platform service for the arrangement they want.
Can you play solo, and does that mean you can play offline?
Solo availability and offline availability are different. A game can let you play alone while still depending on a persistent online connection, so check both before buying if you expect to play without internet.
- Temtem: Its publisher calls the world always online. That is a connection requirement even when you are not playing with a friend.
- Palworld: Its store listing includes single-player. That confirms a solo option, but the listing information here does not establish every offline behavior or requirement for every platform.
- Pokémon Scarlet or Violet: Nintendo describes a self-paced solo exploration experience, alongside optional multiplayer activities. The cited multiplayer guidance does not establish a need for an online connection to play the solo adventure.
- Cassette Beasts: The listing describes its creature-collecting RPG and local shared play, plus separate online features. The available description does not set out a broad offline guarantee for every mode.
If you need a game that works when disconnected, treat “single-player” or “solo adventure” as insufficient proof by itself. Check the current platform store page or publisher support information for offline requirements for the mode you intend to use.
This distinction is especially useful when one person in a pair expects to play more often than the other. You may be buying a game for shared sessions but still want independent progress between them. Confirm that the solo mode suits that use, then separately check whether a connection is required. The sources described here do not establish every offline behavior for every title and platform, so do not turn a “single-player” label into a broader promise.
What hardware, accounts, and services should you check?
Before purchasing, line up the exact platform, game edition, and play arrangement for every person. A friend’s compatible game does not necessarily remove the need for a second system, a separate copy, an account, an online membership, or the right network connection.
For Pokémon Scarlet or Violet local wireless
- Nintendo’s consumer guidance says each local player needs their own Nintendo Switch system and game copy. “Local” here means systems connected over local wireless, not multiple players sharing one console.
- Nintendo’s guidance describes a group of two to four people for the listed group activities.
- Nintendo’s online-play notice specifies a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play. Check current Nintendo terms for the account and service requirements that apply to your region and activity.
Nintendo’s official Play Nintendo guidance states: “Additional games and systems required for multiplayer mode. Sold separately.” That is why an additional controller alone is not a substitute for another console and game copy.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Count the setup per person before you buy: each local participant needs a system and a copy, not just a seat on one console. If you already own one Switch and one copy, the additional purchase category for this arrangement is another Switch system and another game copy. No specific price is established here, so compare current retailer and platform prices for your region rather than budgeting from an assumed figure. If you are shopping for a physical game, verify that the specific listing is for the format and platform you intend to use.
For online play in the other games
- For Temtem, plan around the always-online requirement the publisher describes.
- For Palworld on PlayStation in the United States, the PlayStation listing says PS Plus is required for online play. Do not apply that platform-specific condition automatically to other platforms or regions.
- For any Palworld platform pairing, confirm current cross-play support for the exact platforms and versions. The version 0.5.0 server guide is not enough to promise current compatibility.
- For Cassette Beasts, distinguish the local shared-play description from its separate online feature list. Confirm that the specific online activity you want is supported before purchase.
A useful pre-purchase checklist is to write down each player’s device, game copy, account, online service, and connection needs. Then check the current requirements for that exact activity. An online membership mentioned for one platform, region, or title should not automatically be assumed to apply to every other setup.

Use this short sequence to turn “we want a creature game” into a concrete compatibility check. It helps prevent the most common mismatch: buying a game with multiplayer features that are not the kind of multiplayer you meant.
- Name the shared activity. Decide whether you want to explore a story together, meet for trades or battles, play locally in person, or build and survive in the same world.
- Decide where each person will play. Write down the exact devices and platforms. Do not infer same-screen play from the phrase “local multiplayer,” and do not infer cross-play from “online co-op.”
- Check the campaign scope. Look for wording that specifically says friends can complete routes, story content, or major encounters together. A list of online trades, PvP, or raids answers a narrower question.
- Check solo and connection needs separately. If either person may play alone or offline, confirm both conditions for that game and platform. Temtem’s always-online description is especially important for this decision.
- Count the required hardware and copies. For Scarlet or Violet local wireless, count one Switch system and one game copy per participant. Do not budget for an extra controller as if it provides local co-op on one console.
- Verify accounts, memberships, and region. Confirm online-service requirements for the platform and country where each person will play. Nintendo and the U.S. PlayStation listing specify requirements that should not be generalized beyond their stated contexts.
- Recheck version-specific compatibility. Store listings and service terms can change. For Palworld in particular, verify current platform pairing rather than relying on a server guide labeled version 0.5.0.
For two players, make the checklist together rather than letting one person buy first and assume the other can join. Ask each player to confirm their actual platform and whether they own the game. Then match those answers to the desired mode. This catches common avoidable disappointments: an online activity mistaken for campaign co-op, “local” mistaken for one-screen play, or a compatible title assumed to require only an extra controller.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What common buying assumptions lead to disappointment?
Most multiplayer mismatches come from reading a broad label as a promise about a specific mode. Treat the following assumptions as unconfirmed unless the current publisher or platform information explicitly supports them.
- “Local multiplayer means one screen.” Not necessarily. Scarlet and Violet local group play uses separate systems connected wirelessly; Cassette Beasts is the option here whose description expressly presents local shared exploration.
- “Online multiplayer means we can play the whole story together.” Not necessarily. Cassette Beasts describes online trades, 1v1 battles, and cooperative Rogue Fusions, while its local description is the one that expressly mentions exploring together. Temtem’s publisher gives a more explicit account of co-op campaign activities.
- “I can play solo, so I can play without internet.” Not necessarily. Temtem is described as always online despite offering a campaign that can be played alone.
- “The game is cross-platform because it has online co-op.” That conclusion is not supported for every Palworld pairing. Verify compatibility for the exact platform and version combination.
- “A spare controller solves local multiplayer.” It does not satisfy Nintendo’s separate-system and separate-copy requirements for Scarlet or Violet local wireless.
- “A two-to-four-player specification means the whole campaign is a four-player co-op story.” Nintendo’s figure concerns the listed group activities—exploring, trading, battling, and Tera Raids—not a promise that friends jointly complete every story battle.
Which game should you choose?
Choose according to the shared activity you care about most: Temtem for an online co-op campaign, Cassette Beasts for described local shared exploration, Scarlet or Violet for a mostly solo adventure with supported group activities, and Palworld for a survival-and-crafting world with creature collecting. If your must-have is offline play, same-screen multiplayer, or cross-play between particular platforms, verify that exact requirement rather than relying on a general multiplayer label.
In short, buy for the mode you will actually use. Choose the shared campaign when you want to progress through adventure activities with a friend; choose local exploration when playing together in the same room is the priority; choose group activities when solo exploration remains central; and choose a survival world when crafting and building are part of the appeal. Before checkout, confirm every player’s device, copy, account, service, and connection requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can we play the story together online?
Temtem is the clearest match among these choices: its publisher describes friends catching Temtem, completing routes, confronting leaders, and fighting together in dual battles. Cassette Beasts lists online trades, 1v1 battles, and cooperative Rogue Fusions, but those features do not establish full online campaign co-op.
Does local co-op mean we can play on one screen?
Not always. Nintendo describes Scarlet and Violet local group play over local wireless, with each player using an individual system and game copy. Cassette Beasts explicitly describes local shared exploration, transformation, and fighting. Check the exact platform listing for the arrangement you want.
Can different versions of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet play together?
Yes. Nintendo’s guidance says the different Scarlet and Violet versions can play together. Version-dependent Pokémon species still differ, so players may encounter different species depending on which version each owns.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo we each need a Switch and a copy for local Scarlet or Violet multiplayer?
Yes. Nintendo’s local-play guidance requires a separate Switch system and game copy for each participant; an additional controller alone does not meet that requirement. The listed group activities support two to four players.
Can I play solo without an internet connection?
Solo play does not by itself confirm offline play. The publisher describes Temtem as always online, including when you play alone. For the other titles, check the current platform or publisher information for the offline requirements of the mode you plan to use.
Does Palworld require a dedicated server for two friends to play online?
The listing confirms online co-op, but it does not establish that a dedicated server is required for every two-player setup. Pocketpair’s server guide distinguishes dedicated and listed community servers, but its version 0.5.0 label does not confirm current setup requirements for every platform.
Does Palworld have cross-play between every platform?
Do not assume so. The available listing does not establish universal cross-play, and the server guide labeled version 0.5.0 cannot certify every current platform pairing. Confirm compatibility for the specific platforms and versions before buying.
Do I need an online membership to play with friends?
Requirements depend on the title, platform, region, and activity. Nintendo’s online-play notice specifies a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play. The U.S. PlayStation listing says PS Plus is required for Palworld online play on that platform. Check current terms for your own setup.
The Bottom Line
Pick the game by the job you want a second player to do: Temtem for an explicitly described online campaign, Cassette Beasts for local shared exploration, Pokémon Scarlet or Violet for solo exploration plus group activities, or Palworld for collecting inside a survival-and-crafting game. Verify the exact connection, device, copy, membership, and cross-play requirements before buying.
