Choose by verifying the exact filter model’s PFAS-specific claim in an accredited certifier’s directory, then keep up with its replacement schedule. A standard number on a label alone is not proof of PFAS reduction or compliance with every EPA drinking-water limit.
How reverse osmosis and activated carbon reduce PFAS
Granular activated carbon (GAC)
GAC traps contaminants as water flows through carbon media. Its performance depends on the specific product and its certified claim; the words “carbon filter” alone do not establish that a device reduces PFAS. EPA describes both GAC and RO as treatment options for PFAS in drinking water. EPA’s filter guide explains the technologies and their use.
Reverse osmosis (RO)
RO pushes water across a thin membrane, separating treated water from a reject-water stream. The system typically has more installation and water-use considerations than a simple carbon cartridge. EPA’s guide estimates RO systems at $150–$1,000 before maintenance costs and says the systems discussed waste about one gallon for every gallon treated. Those are guide estimates, not universal figures for every model or current retail prices.
Which option should you choose?
Start with the exact PFAS claim and the fit for your home—not the technology name alone. Use the comparison below as a selection framework; installation format, upkeep, and performance details vary by product.

EPA recommends checking for NSF/ANSI 53 (drinking-water treatment units) or NSF/ANSI 58 (RO systems) specifically for PFAS reduction, and consulting a certifier’s directory if a claim is unclear. EPA’s home-filter guidance provides its recommendations. NSF likewise says devices certified to NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 are an effective way to limit PFAS exposure. NSF’s PFAS guidance explains its certification information.
What a PFAS certification does—and does not—tell you
Verify the precise model, standard, and contaminant claim. A certification to a standard number by itself does not mean the product has a PFAS reduction claim: EPA advises looking for PFAS specifically. Check the certifier’s directory and the product’s current performance data sheet to confirm which PFAS are covered.

- EFFECTIVE FILTRATION – Reduces TDS (93-98%), PFAS (96-99%), Chlorine (95-99%), Asbestos (>99.7%), Barium (>98.4%), Cadmium (>98.8%), Chromium (>99.2%), Copper (>97.8%), Fluoride (>97.4%), Lead (>98.9%), Selenium (>99.0%), and over 1,000 other contaminants.
Certification is not a guarantee that filtered water meets every EPA maximum contaminant level (MCL). NSF describes its PFAS reduction claim threshold as below 20 parts per trillion (ppt). EPA said in its filter guide, as of April 2024, that the then-current PFAS filter certification standards did not show reduction to the levels in its new drinking-water rule. The NSF threshold and the EPA limits therefore should not be treated as equivalent.
EPA’s 2024 rule set MCLs of 4.0 ppt for PFOA and 4.0 ppt for PFOS, and 10 ppt each for PFHxS, PFNA, and HFPO-DA (GenX). It also set a hazard index for mixtures containing two or more of PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA, and PFBS. These regulatory limits are context for interpreting test results, not a claim that a particular home filter will achieve them.

How to check a filter before buying
- Identify the exact product. Record the model number and system type, not just the brand or a broad label such as “carbon” or “RO.”
- Find the PFAS-specific claim. Look for NSF/ANSI 53 for a drinking-water treatment unit or NSF/ANSI 58 for an RO system, with PFAS reduction expressly identified.
- Confirm the listing. Search the relevant accredited certifier’s product directory if the packaging or seller’s page is ambiguous. Match the listing to the model number.
- Read the performance data sheet. Check which PFAS are covered, the stated conditions and replacement instructions, and any limits on the claim. Do not infer a reduction percentage or coverage of unlisted PFAS.
- Price the upkeep and fit. Include replacement cartridges or membranes, installation needs, and—if considering RO—the reject-water tradeoff. Compare with the costs and requirements of the particular GAC product.
Maintenance determines whether treatment continues
A filter’s claim depends on operating it as directed. Replace cartridges, membranes, and other scheduled components on the manufacturer’s timetable; do not assume that a filter remains effective indefinitely because it once had a PFAS certification. EPA’s home-filter guidance emphasizes following manufacturer instructions and replacing components on time.

Do not assume a well is PFAS-free or select a filter based on a general claim alone. EPA advises private-well owners to contact state or tribal environmental or health agencies for advice and lists of certified laboratories that use EPA-developed drinking-water methods. Use local testing guidance to understand what PFAS testing is appropriate, then match any treatment choice to the results and a verified product claim. See EPA’s guidance for PFAS and private wells.
