Separately, GeekWire reported that Peter Lee, the former head of Microsoft Research and most recently president of Microsoft Science, is resigning after more than 16 years at the company. The announcements are distinct; available reporting does not establish that they are coordinated.
Why is Ryan Roslansky leaving Microsoft?
Roslansky said the next phase of his work would require him to be in Redmond full-time, every day, while his and his family’s life is in the Bay Area. He described the decision as one he had considered for a long time. That is his stated explanation; Microsoft’s announcement does not attribute his departure to a dispute or a company performance issue. Microsoft’s October 1, 2026 announcement includes his explanation.
When will Ryan Roslansky leave, and who will lead LinkedIn?
Roslansky plans to leave at the end of calendar year 2026. Until then, he will serve as an adviser to Nadella and support the transition, according to Microsoft. The company said Dan Shapero continues as LinkedIn CEO; it did not describe him as a new appointment in this announcement.
Roslansky’s role before the departure announcement
In March 2026, Microsoft named Roslansky among its executive vice presidents reporting directly to Nadella. In a separate Copilot update that month, Microsoft said Roslansky, Perry Clarke, and Charles Lamanna would lead Microsoft 365 apps and the Copilot platform. Those announcements describe his role before his planned departure, not a post-departure reporting structure. Microsoft’s March leadership announcement and its March Microsoft 365 Copilot update provide that context.

LinkedIn figures in Microsoft’s announcement
Microsoft’s October post gives LinkedIn’s membership at 1.3 billion. In his message reproduced there, Roslansky said the company had grown to more than 1 billion members and that its business had nearly tripled during his period as CEO. The latter figures are his account of growth, not independently audited metrics cited by the announcement. Microsoft also describes his combined tenure at LinkedIn and Microsoft as nearly 18 years.
What is known about Peter Lee’s departure?
GeekWire reported on October 1, 2026, that Lee was resigning from Microsoft after more than 16 years. It identifies him as the former head of Microsoft Research and most recently president of Microsoft Science. Unlike Roslansky’s departure, Lee’s departure is reported by GeekWire rather than confirmed in a Microsoft announcement in the reporting reviewed. GeekWire’s report quotes Lee’s LinkedIn post.

Both executives were reported to be leaving Microsoft on October 1, 2026, but the available accounts differ in what they confirm. Microsoft’s post sets out Roslansky’s planned year-end departure, advisory transition, stated reason, and LinkedIn leadership continuity. GeekWire’s report covers Lee’s resignation and his description of an unnamed opportunity. The sources do not establish a connection between the two decisions.
