There is no clean set of verified 2024 personal-computer statistics in the source article: many figures describe 2021–2023, are forecasts, or lack a clear reference year. The available evidence distinguishes PC shipments from web-traffic share and device usage, so those measures should not be treated as interchangeable.

Here is what the figures support, and how to interpret them without presenting older or projected data as 2024 facts.

What the source article actually measures

The article titled “Personal Computer Statistics in 2024: Latest Facts & Numbers” was published on January 29, 2024. It combines shipment figures, web-traffic data, internet-use statistics, forecasts, and older market claims. Its publication date does not make every number a 2024 observation.

These measures answer different questions:

Measure What it tells you What it does not tell you
PC shipments How many computers vendors shipped during a period How many PCs are currently in use or owned
Web-traffic share The share of measured web activity associated with desktop, mobile, or tablet devices The number of devices in existence
Internet-user device usage Whether internet users access online services with particular device types Household ownership or annual sales
Market CAGR A projected growth rate over a stated forecast period Observed growth in a completed year

PC shipments: the figures are not 2024 totals

The source article states that 56.7 million PCs shipped worldwide in the first quarter of 2023. That is explicitly a Q1 2023 figure, not a 2024 shipment total.

It also mentions 286 million PCs shipped globally. The associated annual period is not clearly established, and the discussion is followed by a cited 16.2% shipment decline in 2022. That figure should not be used as evidence of 2024 global shipments.

Likewise, the article cites a 2.22% PC-market compound annual growth rate for 2023–2028. This is a forecast, not a measurement of what happened in 2024.

Desktop, mobile, and tablet web traffic

The article gives a 43% desktop, 55% mobile, and 2% tablet split. That breakdown is not current. StatCounter’s worldwide platform page reports the following values for July 2026:

How many people use computers to go online?

DataReportal’s global overview reports 6.12 billion internet users at the start of April 2026, equal to 73.8% of the world’s population. It also reports that:

  • 96.2% of internet users use a mobile phone to go online at least some of the time.
  • Mobile phones account for 51.6% of global web traffic.
  • 53.8% of adult internet users in larger economies use laptops and desktops for at least some online activities.

The last figure is a usage statistic. It does not mean that 53.8% of households own a computer or measure PC shipments. DataReportal also notes routine reporting delays in global internet-user data, which may cause recent growth rates to understate actual adoption. Its live overview changes over time, so use a static report when a stable citation is required.

Claim Why it is unsuitable as a verified 2024 figure
“50% of private households worldwide own a computer” The cited page provides no directly verifiable underlying dataset or clearly defined reference year.
“More than 3 billion people access the internet through computers and tablets” The article labels this as an April 2023 figure.
“The average American spends 3 hours 31 minutes daily looking at computer screens” Screen time is not the same as personal-computer use, and the article provides no current, directly verifiable primary dataset or methodology.
“Laptops account for 75.8% of the global PC market” The claim is attributed to Gitnux and dated 2023; it is not a verified 2024 shipment or installed-base statistic.
“Lenovo had 23.3% of global PC shipments” This refers to Q1 2023, not 2024 or the current market.
“Only 37% of Google’s U.S. organic search traffic came from desktops” The article does not provide a current measurement date in the body.
“The top 10 websites visited on a computer” The heading appears in the article, but the accessible text does not contain a corresponding top-10 list.
“Bard” as Google’s current AI product name Google renamed Bard to Gemini in February 2024.
“Fastest internet speeds in 2024” The section says its data were current as of April 2023, so it does not verify 2024 rankings.

Desktop browsing was not eliminated by mobile

The article refers to desktop browsing being overtaken by mobile in 2016. That is a historical milestone, not a current market statistic. StatCounter’s July 2026 data show desktop at 45.93% of worldwide web traffic.

The practical conclusion is not that desktop has replaced mobile or vice versa. Mobile leads global web traffic, while desktop remains responsible for a large share of activity. Device preference also varies by country, audience, website type, work requirements, and task.

How to cite PC statistics accurately

  1. Name the metric. Say “PC shipments,” “desktop web-traffic share,” or “laptop and desktop usage,” rather than simply “PC users.”
  2. Include the period. A Q1 2023 shipment number is not an annual 2024 number.
  3. Separate observations from forecasts. A 2023–2028 CAGR is a projection, even when cited in an article published in 2024.
  4. Record the source’s definition. StatCounter measures percentage market share of web traffic; it does not count computers.
  5. Use a stable citation where possible. DataReportal’s live overview changes over time, so use a static report when reproducibility matters.
  6. Avoid converting one measure into another. A person who uses a laptop sometimes is not automatically a laptop owner, and a shipped PC is not necessarily still active.

What can reasonably be concluded?

The evidence supports three careful conclusions. First, the source article does not provide a clean set of verified 2024 PC statistics; much of its material is historical or projected. Second, mobile devices are central to global internet access: DataReportal reports mobile-phone use among 96.2% of internet users. Third, laptops and desktops remain important: 53.8% of adult internet users in larger economies use them for at least some online activities, and desktop represented 45.93% of worldwide web traffic in StatCounter’s July 2026 view.

Those findings describe different parts of the technology landscape. They should not be combined into a claim about the percentage of people who own personal computers.

FAQ

Is the article’s 56.7 million figure a 2024 PC shipment statistic?

No. It is explicitly identified as worldwide PC shipments in Q1 2023.

What does the 286 million PC figure represent?

The article presents it as an annual global total associated with earlier market data, but it does not clearly establish the reference year. It should not be treated as a 2024 total.

Does StatCounter count computers?

No. StatCounter reports percentage market share of measured web traffic by platform. Its figures are not counts of computers owned, installed, sold, or used.

What percentage of people still use laptops or desktops?

DataReportal reports that 53.8% of adult internet users in larger economies use laptops and desktops for at least some online activities. This is a usage measure, not an ownership or shipment figure.

Is the 2.22% PC-market CAGR an observed 2024 result?

No. It is a forecast for the 2023–2028 period.

What is Google Bard called now?

Google renamed Bard to Gemini in February 2024.

The Bottom Line

The safest summary is that the source article is a mixed collection of older figures, forecasts, and usage measurements—not a verified 2024 statistical snapshot. Treat 56.7 million as Q1 2023 shipments, 2.22% as a 2023–2028 forecast, and the 43% desktop figure as stale. For current comparisons, identify the metric and date first: StatCounter measures web traffic, while DataReportal measures internet access and device usage. Neither source, by itself, proves how many personal computers people own.
