Choose E2B for a focused, developer-friendly code-execution sandbox with predictable tiers. Choose Daytona when you need persistent workspaces, GPU or desktop operating systems, or customer-managed compute. Choose Modal for Modal-native applications, reinforcement-learning rollouts, and very high parallelism. Choose Perplexity SPACE when pause/resume, session forking, live-state snapshots, credential isolation, and outbound-network policy are the deciding requirements.

The platforms overlap, but they are not interchangeable products. Their isolation boundaries, lifecycles, runtime choices, controls, APIs, concurrency limits, and billing units differ enough that the cheapest-looking rate may be the wrong choice for your agent.

At-a-glance decision

Platform Best fit Isolation and lifecycle Runtime breadth Distinctive controls Published pricing examples

What an AI agent sandbox actually provides

An agent sandbox is an isolated execution environment where an agent can run generated code, inspect or transform files, install or use dependencies, call approved tools, and execute tests without giving that code unrestricted access to the host application or production network. The practical question is not simply whether a vendor uses a container or virtual machine. You need to evaluate the complete boundary: kernel isolation, writable storage, network egress, credentials, process lifetime, suspension behavior, restoration, and the operator’s ability to set limits.

Isolation boundary

A container normally shares a host kernel, while a virtual machine supplies a stronger boundary by running a separate kernel. Firecracker microVMs, Linux VMs, and secure containers can all be appropriate, but their security properties depend on configuration, host hardening, network policy, and the paths through which credentials and files enter the environment. Ask what happens if generated code tries to read another tenant’s data, access metadata services, open an unrestricted outbound connection, or retain a secret in a log.

Lifecycle and state

Agents often need more than a one-shot process. A short code interpreter call can be disposable, whereas a coding agent may need to stop overnight, resume with its processes and files intact, or branch a working state into several experiments. “Persistent” can mean retained disk only, a stopped VM, a full memory snapshot, or a workspace that survives without the original process. Confirm which state is saved and when charges stop.

Network and secret handling

Network controls should be evaluated separately from filesystem isolation. A sandbox can be isolated and still exfiltrate data over an unrestricted connection. Host allowlists, protocol forwarding, egress proxies, and per-session credentials reduce that risk. A strong design keeps plaintext credentials out of environment variables, files, command arguments, and logs, then injects access only for an approved destination.

Perplexity SPACE: best for resumable, policy-controlled sessions

Architecture and lifecycle

Perplexity describes SPACE as a set of ephemeral sandboxes, each running in a Firecracker microVM. A template defines the starting filesystem and runtime configuration; a sandbox is the isolated microVM with a writable filesystem. The platform describes the sandbox as living only while it is needed for code execution, file interaction, or another task, then being destroyed when the task finishes.

That disposability does not mean all state is lost. SPACE supports pause and resume, session forking, and rolling snapshots that can preserve live memory and files. Sandboxes created through the API suspend after six hours without access or command activity. In practice, you should distinguish an active sandbox, an automatically suspended sandbox, and a destroyed sandbox whose state can be recreated from a snapshot. Verify your retention and restoration policy before treating a snapshot as a long-term backup.

Security and connectivity controls

SPACE documents node-level outbound-network controls, per-session credential isolation, and protocol forwarding. Those controls are useful when an agent needs access to a narrow set of services but must not inherit the host application’s broad credentials or unrestricted internet access. The platform calls the in-sandbox layer its “last line of defence,” so application-level validation and least-privilege tool design remain necessary even with microVM isolation.

When SPACE is the right choice

  • Sessions need to pause and resume with process memory, not just a rebuilt filesystem.
  • Users need to fork an agent session to explore alternative plans without mutating the original.
  • Credentials must be isolated per session and outbound traffic constrained by policy.
  • Your control plane can accommodate a SPACE-specific API rather than assuming every E2B feature maps exactly.

SPACE limitations to plan for

The published material does not establish a complete matrix for Windows, macOS, GPU types, or SPACE pricing, so do not assume those capabilities from the microVM description alone. The six-hour inactivity suspension also matters for agents that depend on an unattended process. Design a wake-up and state-check path, and measure how your application handles a resumed session.

E2B: the straightforward choice for agent code execution

Core model

E2B provides isolated sandboxes for agents to execute code, process data, and run tools. Its documented building blocks are a fast, secure Linux VM, a template, and persistence. A template packages the starting environment; persistence lets an agent keep useful state between interactions. Pausing saves filesystem and memory, and a paused sandbox remains until it is killed.

Plans and limits

Tier Published allowance or limit What it means operationally
Hobby $100 one-time usage credit; sessions up to one hour; 20 concurrent sandboxes Useful for prototyping and low-duty-cycle experiments; the credit is not described as a recurring monthly grant
Pro $150 per month plus usage; sessions up to 24 hours; 100 concurrent sandboxes, expandable to 1,100; custom CPU and RAM Suitable for production workloads that fit a one-day session window and need predictable concurrency controls
Enterprise Committed usage, multi-day persistent sessions, tens of thousands of concurrent sandboxes, custom sizes, and BYOC Designed for large deployments or teams that need negotiated capacity and customer-managed infrastructure

Running E2B sandboxes are charged per second. The platform reports more than 2 billion sandboxes started, a scale indicator rather than a guarantee of performance for your workload.

Strengths and trade-offs

  • Strength: A narrow product scope makes the VM, template, persistence, lifecycle, and SDK concepts easy to explain to a development team.
  • Strength: Per-second billing and explicit Hobby, Pro, and Enterprise paths make an initial capacity model easier than a bundle with opaque included services.
  • Trade-off: The documented runtime is Linux VM-oriented; the supplied material does not establish Daytona-style macOS or Windows environments.
  • Trade-off: A 24-hour Pro session limit can be restrictive for jobs that must remain live for several days unless you move to Enterprise or redesign around checkpoints.

Daytona: broad runtimes and infrastructure control

Isolation and runtime choices

Daytona describes every sandbox as an isolated runtime with its own kernel, filesystem, network stack, vCPU, RAM, and disk. Its documented choices include Linux containers, Linux VMs, GPU sandboxes with NVIDIA and AMD acceleration, and macOS sandboxes on dedicated Apple silicon. The product also presents Windows support and customer-managed compute, which can matter for desktop automation, platform-specific builds, or regulated deployments.

Secrets without plaintext injection

Daytona Secrets keep plaintext credentials outside the sandbox. Its outbound proxy substitutes an opaque placeholder with the real value only when a request is made to an allowed host. The secret therefore does not appear in environment variables, files, process arguments, or logs. This pattern reduces accidental leakage, but you still need to restrict which hosts and operations the credential can reach.

Published resource rates

Resource Rate Billing unit
CPU $0.0504 Per vCPU-hour
Memory $0.0162 Per GiB-hour
Storage $0.000108 Per GiB-hour

These are vendor-published resource rates, not a complete workload price. Add the amount of CPU, memory, storage, GPU time, networking, and any managed-control-plane charges your deployment uses.

When Daytona wins

  • Your agent must use GPU acceleration and you want a documented NVIDIA or AMD choice.
  • You need a macOS environment on dedicated Apple silicon or Windows support rather than a Linux-only runtime.
  • Workspaces should persist as development environments instead of being rebuilt for each short call.
  • Customer-managed compute is a requirement for compliance, locality, or existing infrastructure policy.

Modal: maximum fan-out and Modal-native workloads

Execution model

Modal Sandboxes are secure containers for untrusted user or agent code. The documented use cases include model-generated code, isolated untrusted execution, repository tests, CI pipelines, arbitrary dependencies, and reinforcement-learning rollouts. Images are defined at runtime, and the platform exposes volumes, command execution, readiness probes, and lifecycle events.

Lifetime and checkpointing

The default maximum lifetime is five minutes, configurable up to 24 hours. That short default favors bursty work and rapid cleanup. For longer jobs, Modal recommends filesystem snapshots and restoring a later sandbox. A snapshot-based design is different from keeping the original process alive: plan explicit checkpoints for in-memory state that cannot be reconstructed from files.

Scale and price examples

Modal advertises more than 1 million sandboxes in parallel. Its product page lists $0.1419 per physical core-hour and $0.0240 per GiB-hour. These units differ from Daytona’s vCPU-hour and GiB-hour rates, so multiplying the numbers directly can produce a misleading comparison. Modal’s advantage is usually throughput and integration with its image, volume, and GPU platform rather than the lowest headline unit price.

When Modal is the right fit

  • Your team already operates applications, images, volumes, and GPUs on Modal.
  • You need to launch very large numbers of independent rollouts or test jobs.
  • Reinforcement learning or bursty inference creates high parallelism but uneven utilization.
  • Your workload can checkpoint to files or external storage before a sandbox reaches its lifetime limit.

Security: what the published evaluation does and does not prove

Perplexity’s September 23, 2026 security evaluation tested SPACE and eight other platforms, including E2B, Modal Sandboxes, and Daytona Sandbox. The configurations were tested on August 31 and September 1, 2026. After remediation, none of the evaluated models retrieved the callback flag.

That result applies to the versions and configurations used in that evaluation. It does not certify every deployment, image, SDK version, network rule, customer integration, or future release. Use it as one data point, then run your own tests for prompt injection, filesystem escape, credential exposure, metadata access, unrestricted egress, denial of service, and log leakage.

Compatibility: can E2B clients run on SPACE?

SPACE provides an E2B Compatibility Wrapper, but it is a separate compatibility surface rather than the full SPACE API. The documented tested packages are e2b==2.21.1 and e2b-code-interpreter==2.6.2. Common create, lifecycle, command, filesystem, watch, and port flows are supported.

The wrapper rejects mcp, volumeMounts, and iam create capabilities. It also rejects network.allowPublicTraffic=true, and some memory-related pause and resume variants are unsupported. Treat a successful import or basic command as evidence of migration compatibility only for the flows you exercise, not as proof of identical semantics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical migration checklist

  1. Pin the tested E2B package versions in a disposable branch and run your existing unit and integration tests.
  2. Inventory every create option, especially network, volume, identity, and memory-related fields.
  3. Replace rejected capabilities with SPACE-native credential, network, storage, or protocol controls.
  4. Test command execution, filesystem reads and writes, port forwarding, file watching, pause, resume, fork, and failure recovery separately.
  5. Compare timeouts, suspension behavior, snapshot restoration, and error types under load before switching production traffic.

Cost comparison without false precision

E2B is the only platform here with a published tier price in the supplied material: Pro is $150 per month plus usage, while Hobby includes a $100 one-time usage credit. Daytona and Modal publish resource rates, but their units differ. SPACE pricing is not stated in the available product material. No fair, all-in total-cost figure is published across all four platforms.

Question to model E2B Daytona Modal SPACE
How is compute expressed? Running sandboxes charged per second; plan limits also apply vCPU-hours, GiB-hours of memory, and GiB-hours of storage Physical core-hours and GiB-hours Not stated
What may dominate cost? Runtime duration, concurrency, custom CPU/RAM, and plan commitment CPU, memory, storage, GPU, networking, and managed infrastructure choices High parallelism, memory, GPU or other Modal resources, and snapshot/storage patterns Not stated; measure active, suspended, and snapshot retention behavior
Best first estimate Expected sandbox-seconds multiplied by resource size, then add plan fee vCPU-hours plus GiB-hours memory and storage, with separate workload services Physical core-hours plus GiB-hours and platform resources Obtain current pricing and model active versus suspended sessions

How to choose: a requirements-first framework

Choose SPACE when session state is the product

Select SPACE if users expect an agent to stop and continue later with live memory and files, branch a session, and access only narrowly authorized services. Confirm the six-hour inactivity suspension and design explicit resume handling.

Choose E2B when code execution is the product

Select E2B for a conventional agent coding loop: create a Linux VM from a template, execute commands, inspect files, pause when idle, and meter usage per second. Its clear plan ladder is useful when you can fit within one-hour or 24-hour session limits or have an Enterprise requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Daytona when runtime diversity matters

Select Daytona for GPU variants, macOS on Apple silicon, Windows support, persistent workspaces, or customer-managed compute. Its secret and proxy model is especially relevant when credentials must never be materialized inside the sandbox.

Choose Modal when throughput matters most

Select Modal when your existing platform is Modal or when you need very high fan-out for tests, generated-code evaluation, or reinforcement-learning rollouts. Build around snapshots and checkpoints if work can exceed the five-minute default lifetime.

Use a two-tier design when workloads differ

Some organizations should not force every task onto one provider. A short-lived, massively parallel evaluator can use Modal while a user-facing, resumable coding session uses SPACE or E2B. A GPU or desktop-specific workflow can use Daytona. Keep the agent orchestration layer provider-neutral, but isolate provider-specific lifecycle, snapshot, credential, and network adapters behind explicit interfaces.

Deployment checklist and common failure modes

Before exposing an agent to untrusted prompts

  • Define the exact filesystem paths the agent may read and write.
  • Apply an outbound allowlist and deny public traffic by default unless a documented use case requires it.
  • Issue per-session credentials with the smallest possible host and operation scope.
  • Strip secrets from environment dumps, process listings, command output, and logs.
  • Set CPU, memory, disk, process-count, and wall-clock limits appropriate to the task.
  • Record sandbox creation, suspension, resume, fork, snapshot, and destruction events for audit.

If a resumed session is missing state

Determine whether the state was in memory, on the writable filesystem, in a snapshot, or in an external volume. Rebuildable files should be checkpointed; transient process state needs a platform feature that explicitly preserves memory. Do not assume a destroyed ephemeral sandbox can be recovered merely because a previous session existed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an agent cannot reach a dependency

Check the platform’s egress policy, proxy host allowlist, protocol forwarding rules, DNS behavior, and credential scope in that order. On SPACE, a public-traffic option rejected by the compatibility wrapper must be replaced with an approved policy. On Daytona, verify that the outbound proxy is configured for the requested host. On any platform, test from inside the sandbox rather than inferring access from the control plane.

If costs spike

Look for idle sessions that were paused too late, snapshots retained longer than needed, high memory reservations, uncontrolled retries, and excessive concurrency. Modal’s default five-minute lifetime and E2B’s per-second running charge make lifecycle instrumentation particularly important; Daytona’s separate CPU, memory, and storage meters require the same discipline.

Final recommendation

There is no universal winner. E2B is the default recommendation for a focused Linux code sandbox and a team that values familiar SDK flows and transparent usage tiers. Daytona is the broadest operational choice when persistent workspaces, GPU, macOS, Windows, or customer-managed compute are non-negotiable. Modal is the strongest fit for Modal-native, bursty, massively parallel workloads. SPACE is the specialist choice for durable agent sessions with microVM isolation, per-session credentials, egress policy, snapshots, and fork/resume behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is E2B better than Daytona?

Neither is universally better. E2B is simpler for Linux VM-based agent code execution with per-second billing and explicit Hobby, Pro, and Enterprise tiers. Daytona is better when you need GPU variants, macOS or Windows environments, persistent workspaces, or customer-managed compute.

How does Modal compare with E2B?

Modal emphasizes runtime-defined images, volumes, short-lived containers, and very high parallelism, including reinforcement-learning rollouts. E2B emphasizes a focused Linux VM sandbox with templates, persistence, SDK workflows, and plan-based concurrency. Choose based on your existing platform and whether fan-out or session-oriented development is the dominant workload.

What is the safest sandbox for running agent-generated code?

Safety depends on configuration as well as the provider. SPACE documents Firecracker microVMs, per-session credential isolation, and outbound controls; Daytona documents dedicated runtime resources and a proxy that keeps secrets out of the sandbox; E2B and Modal provide isolated execution environments. Test the exact images, SDK versions, network rules, and credentials used by your deployment.

Which sandbox is cheapest?

The published figures do not support a fair universal ranking. E2B lists a $100 one-time Hobby credit and a $150-per-month Pro plan plus usage; Daytona lists separate CPU, memory, and storage rates; Modal lists physical core-hour and GiB-hour rates; SPACE pricing is not stated here. Benchmark your actual runtime, memory, storage, concurrency, and snapshot behavior.

Can I use E2B clients with Perplexity SPACE?

SPACE offers an E2B Compatibility Wrapper tested with e2b==2.21.1 and e2b-code-interpreter==2.6.2. Common create, lifecycle, command, filesystem, watch, and port flows are supported, but mcp, volumeMounts, iam, public traffic, and some memory-related pause/resume variants are rejected or unsupported. Test your specific calls before migrating.
