Perplexity announced on October 2, 2025, that its Comet browser would be available worldwide for free. The separate Comet Plus news subscription was reported at the time to cost $5 per month, with access included for Pro and Max subscribers. Those price and eligibility details are announcement-era reporting, not confirmed current terms.
What Perplexity announced
Comet is Perplexity’s AI browser. In its October 2, 2025 report, TechCrunch reported that Perplexity was making the browser free worldwide, after first launching it to Max subscribers about three months earlier.
The free browser was described as including a sidecar assistant that could answer questions about a page, summarize content, manage web content, and navigate pages on a user’s behalf. The announcement also described a background assistant for Max users that could handle multiple computer tasks in the background, with a dashboard to monitor progress and the ability for the user to intervene or take over. These are descriptions from the October 2025 report, not confirmation of present-day plan features.
What Comet Plus was—and what its $5 price meant
Comet Plus was presented as a separate AI-enhanced news subscription, not a paid version of the browser. TechCrunch reported a price of $5 per month and said the subscription would be available to free Comet users; Pro and Max subscribers would receive access automatically. Axios had reported the Comet Plus plan and Pro/Max inclusion earlier, on August 26, 2025.

How Comet Plus was meant to support publishers
Axios reported in August 2025 that participating publishers would receive 80% of Comet Plus subscription revenue, and that Perplexity had set aside a $42.5 million pool for early publishing partners. Axios said partner allocation would depend on how much traffic a publisher’s content generated through Comet results or the assistant. These are terms as reported by Axios at the time, not independently verified current program terms.
Jessica Chan, Perplexity’s head of publisher partnerships, told Axios: “We’re really offering more of a transparent payment for participation.” The statement referred to publisher compensation, not the consumer price.
