If a Percy screenshot is blank or stuck loading, first confirm the page and target element were ready when percySnapshot ran. Percy captures the test browser’s DOM and assets, then renders that snapshot in Percy’s infrastructure, so a correct test-browser view and a correct Percy result are separate stages. Check timing, captured DOM, asset discovery, and Percy’s build diagnostics in that order.

How Percy screenshots are captured

Percy does not simply save the browser screenshot produced by your test. Its SDK captures the DOM state and discovers the assets needed to render it; Percy then receives that snapshot and renders it across browser and viewport configurations. That distinction helps narrow the fault: the app or test may have failed before capture, or capture may have succeeded while asset discovery, upload, or remote rendering did not. See BrowserStack’s Percy troubleshooting documentation.

Percy renders snapshots with JavaScript disabled by default because the application’s JavaScript has already run in the test browser before the DOM is captured. If you enabled JavaScript for Percy rendering and are seeing a blank page or timeout, test with it disabled. Enabling it can rerun scripts against an already formed DOM and cause unexpected behavior.

Troubleshoot a blank Percy screenshot step by step

  1. Check the test browser at snapshot time. Before debugging Percy’s rendered image, establish whether the intended UI was visible in the browser running the test when percySnapshot was called. If it was absent there, investigate application state or test flow. If it was visible there but not in Percy, investigate capture timing, the serialized DOM, assets, or remote rendering.
  2. Wait for a meaningful ready state. Avoid taking a snapshot immediately after navigation if data is still loading or the target element has not rendered. Wait for a selector or application state that confirms the content is ready. For script-based CLI snapshots, BrowserStack documents using waitForSelector or waitForTimeout. In Cypress, take snapshots after meaningful milestones such as navigation, interaction, or completed asynchronous loading; see the troubleshooting guide.
  3. Check Percy’s JavaScript setting. If enable-javascript: true is configured, test with it set to false and compare the result. Only enable JavaScript when the rendered page requires it, and account for the possibility that scripts will execute again on the captured DOM.
  4. Inspect the assets Percy discovered. In the build’s Network logs and asset-discovery output, look for failed or slow image, CSS, font, and other resource requests. Check that private asset hosts are allowed and reachable from Percy, that CI requests did not time out, and that protected assets have the required authentication. If content is lazy-loaded, scroll enough to trigger it before capture. For responsive image sources, check the documented captureSrcset option.
  5. Separate an empty build from a blank snapshot. If a build has no uploaded snapshots, verify that the test actually invoked the Percy SDK or CLI command and that CI has a valid PERCY_TOKEN. For parallel runs, make sure the build is finalized after all shards complete. A snapshot that uploaded but renders blank is a different problem from a command that never uploaded one.
  6. Use diagnostics to identify the failing stage. Start with the build’s smart-debug Overview and its classified failure and relevant log line. Open Network logs to investigate missing assets or slow third-party resources. To inspect local capture and asset discovery without creating a build or uploading snapshots, run npx percy exec --debug -- [test command]. Use --verbose for detailed logs while uploading snapshots.
  7. Check intermittent or viewport-specific failures. Compare whether the issue recurs across runs, browsers, and widths. If snapshots are missing, the official guide suggests reducing concurrency to 1 as a diagnostic. For responsive DOM problems, Percy documents deferred upload to load DOMs on the specific device; inspect browser-specific network and rendering details before treating a failure at one width as a global capture problem.

Match the symptom to the likely cause

Symptom First checks
Entire screenshot is blank or stuck loading Check page readiness and snapshot timing; if JavaScript was enabled for rendering, test with it disabled.
One element is missing Confirm it rendered before capture; inspect the serialized DOM, its assets, and lazy-loading behavior.
Images, fonts, or CSS are missing Inspect network logs, host access, CI timeouts, authentication, lazy loading, and responsive srcset capture.
Build contains no snapshots Verify SDK or CLI wiring, command execution, PERCY_TOKEN, and parallel-build finalization.
Only some snapshots are missing Check pending CI requests and concurrency; try concurrency of 1 to test reproducibility.
Percy reports failed snapshots or upload errors Inspect network stability and upload logs; distinguish upload failures from capture or rendering failures.
Test browser looks right, Percy does not Compare the captured DOM and discovered assets with the remote result; investigate JavaScript and responsive rendering configuration.

Keep a short diagnostic record

When comparing a passing and failing run, record these checkpoints so you can locate the stage that changed:

If you need a standalone website screenshot rather than a Percy visual-test snapshot, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one GET request. Its API is separate from Percy’s test workflow and does not replace Percy snapshots in a visual regression suite.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers screenshot and PDF tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Percy take the screenshot directly in my test browser?

No. Its SDK captures the DOM and discovers assets in the test browser; Percy’s service then renders the snapshot.

Why is my Percy build empty even though the test ran?

Check that the Percy SDK or CLI snapshot command actually ran, CI had a valid PERCY_TOKEN, and parallel builds were finalized after their shards completed.
