On November 24, 2025, Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky said the core Pebble watch software stack—including PebbleOS, the phone companion app, and developer and app-store tools—was open source. For owners, the key addition was the mobile app: it is the bridge that keeps a Pebble connected to a phone. The announcement is encouraging for long-term continuity, but it is not a guarantee that every service, component, or official support channel will last indefinitely.
What “100% open source” means for Pebble
Migicovsky described the scope as the “core Pebble watch software stack (everything you need to use your Pebble watch)” and said it would always be open source. That is the founder’s stated commitment, not a binding service-lifetime guarantee. He also noted that the software uses some non-free components, including the PT2 heart-rate sensor and Memfault, and that optional web services such as Wispr-Flow speech recognition may be non-free. His qualification is that these are not required to compile and run the core software; additional non-free components may appear in the future.
So “100%” refers to the core stack as Pebble and Core Devices define it—not every dependency, hosted service, or element associated with every watch feature. Source availability makes code inspectable and reusable; it does not, by itself, keep servers running, guarantee official assistance, or ensure replacement parts remain available.
How the software release changed during 2025
| Date and source | What became available | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| January 27, 2025 — Google Open Source Blog | PebbleOS source, covering core watch functions such as notifications, media controls, fitness tracking, custom apps, and watchfaces. | Google said proprietary chipset-support and Bluetooth-stack code had been removed. The release included build-system files, but would not compile or link as released. |
| November 24, 2025 — Eric Migicovsky | The later Core Devices effort described PebbleOS and its improvements, the mobile companion app, and developer and Appstore software as the core open-source stack. | This describes a subsequent, maintained effort and broader scope than Google’s January code release. It should not be read as a claim that Google’s original January snapshot was build-ready. |
Google reported historically that more than two million Pebble smartwatches had been sold over four years and that more than 10,000 apps and watchfaces had been created. Those figures provide context for the community and codebase, not a count of current owners or active downloads.

Why the companion app matters to owners
A Pebble watch does not connect to the internet on its own. Its companion app on the phone maintains Bluetooth connectivity and handles important jobs: relaying notifications, synchronizing data, installing watchapps, and proxying network requests for the watch. Publishing that app’s source is therefore more than a developer convenience; it exposes a central part of how the watch works day to day.
Core Devices’ public app repository says the app supports all Pebble watches and Pebble Index 01. It also describes the public repository as a manually synced copy of an internal active-development repository, which may lag behind current internal work. Public code can be inspected and reused, but a repository snapshot is not necessarily a real-time view of every change.

App distribution and development are separate parts of continuity
Software can remain available while the easiest way to find and install watch apps becomes a separate point of dependence. Migicovsky described the Pebble Appstore collection as nearly 15,000 watchfaces and watchapps created between 2012 and July 2018. That is his description of the archive, not a fresh count of items currently available. He credited Rebble with downloading an archive when Fitbit closed the original store and continuing a download service.
To reduce reliance on one hosted store, Core Devices announced multiple app-store feeds in the mobile app, its own feed, a developer dashboard, and an Archive.org backup. At announcement, the backup was to be completed gradually and the new feed contained only a subset of apps and faces; the announcement did not establish that either was complete that day.

Core Devices’ official store links to the Pebble Appstore and developer information, and describes browser-based CloudPebble development. Its July 2026 update reported 2,120 apps and watchfaces created for Pebble Time 2 and Pebble Round 2, along with community software contributions. That later activity is evidence of continued development, not a promise about how long any particular feed or service will be hosted.

- Existing owners: The newly published phone-app source addresses a key piece of the phone-to-watch connection, while PebbleOS and developer work provide a broader public foundation.
- Developers: Public code, developer information, and browser-based CloudPebble provide ways to inspect or build for Pebble. The public app repository may lag the internal development version.
- People concerned about longevity: Open source can make it easier for a community to maintain software if official development or hosting changes. It cannot guarantee that community volunteers, hosting, phone-platform compatibility, or hardware parts will always be available.
- Prospective buyers: Treat software openness and hardware suitability as different questions. Core Devices lists Pebble Time 2 and Pebble Round 2; Migicovsky said Pebble Time 2 has a screwed back cover and replaceable battery. Check the current model details, availability, feature set, and support information before buying.
Core Devices’ July 2026 update also reported user complaints involving inaccurate step or sleep metrics, accelerometer issues, and touchscreen problems on Pebble Time 2. The company said it was working on fixes without a stated ETA in that update. These are company-reported issues, not evidence that every unit is affected or independently measured defect rates. The same update discussed high power consumption and cracked-glass reports; those reports should likewise be treated as company-reported, rather than universal findings.
