The PE85N1013 is a 50-ohm coaxial amplified noise-source module covering 10 MHz to 6 GHz. It is specified for wireless bit-error-rate (BER) and noise-figure testing, with -14 dBm output power, -112 dBm/Hz noise power and ±2.5 dB typical flatness. Its RF output is SMA female, and it requires a +15 VDC nominal bias.

What the PE85N1013 does

An amplified noise source generates broadband RF noise for injecting a known noise signal into a test setup. The PE85N1013 is intended for applications including wireless BER and error-rate measurement, noise-figure measurement, automated test equipment (ATE), satellite communications (SATCOM), and radar-related built-in testing. Its stated operating bandwidth is 10 MHz to 6 GHz, making it relevant to systems whose test frequencies fall within that range.

The specifications below are from the PE/Mouser datasheet listing in 2026. They describe the module; they do not establish a particular test result or guarantee compatibility with every test fixture.

PE85N1013 specifications

Specification Documented value
Frequency range 10 MHz to 6 GHz
Output power -14 dBm
Noise power -112 dBm/Hz
Amplitude flatness ±2.5 dB typical
RF impedance 50 ohms
RF connector SMA female
Bias supply +15 VDC nominal; 14–18 V range
Operating temperature -40°C to +100°C

Using it for wireless BER or noise-figure tests

For BER or error-rate work, the module can provide broadband noise to a wireless test setup. The stated frequency coverage must include the band under test, and the output level and noise density must suit the receiver, signal chain and test method. A system may need additional attenuation or other RF conditioning to reach the intended noise level; the published figures alone do not specify a complete calibrated test configuration.

What to check before selecting a noise source

  • Frequency coverage: Ensure the source covers every test frequency of interest; the PE85N1013 is specified from 10 MHz through 6 GHz.
  • Level and spectral density: Compare the -14 dBm output power and -112 dBm/Hz noise power with the levels required by the test, accounting for attenuation and the rest of the RF path.
  • Flatness: Its ±2.5 dB flatness is typical, not a stated guaranteed maximum across all units or conditions.
  • Control range: The listing does not specify an integrated attenuation or output-level control range.
  • Connections and power: Check that the SMA female RF interface and 14–18 VDC bias range fit the fixture and supply you plan to use.
  • Calibration and environment: Verify calibration or ENR documentation if needed, and make sure the unit’s operating temperature range fits the intended environment.
