Draft 0.5 became available to PCI-SIG members on May 1, 2026; the group says the completed specification remains on track for 2028.
What PCIe 8.0’s 1 TB/s figure means
PCI-SIG states a target raw signaling rate of 256.0 gigatransfers per second (GT/s) and up to 1.0 terabyte per second (TB/s) bidirectionally over an x16 configuration. “Bidirectionally” means the headline figure combines traffic in both directions; it is not a one-way transfer rate. The x16 label means the link uses 16 lanes. The 1 TB/s figure is a specification target, not a measured result from a finished PCIe 8.0 product.
GT/s describes transfers per second, not bytes delivered to an application. Actual usable throughput depends on how the final standard encodes and manages data, as well as the devices and workload. The public draft announcements do not establish a final application-level throughput figure.
Where PCIe 8.0 stands—and when it may arrive
On May 1, 2026, PCI-SIG announced that draft 0.5 was available for member review. The draft incorporates feedback after version 0.3 became available to members on September 18, 2025. PCI-SIG President and Chairperson Al Yanes said the specification “remains on track for full release by 2028.” That is a target for the standard’s release, not a retail launch date for computers, graphics cards, accelerators, or storage devices.

- EIGHT PORTS FROM ONE PCIE SLOT: Add 8 USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports running at 5Gbps, 2 USB-C and 6 USB-A, to a desktop, server or NAS through a single PCIe x1 slot, for keyboards, drives, docks, printers and controllers.
- THREE-GROUP 5V/3A POWER MANAGEMENT: USB-C 1-2, USB-A 3-5 and USB-A 6-8 are isolated power groups, so the card sustains up to eight 5V/1A devices or three 5V/2A devices without an external power supply.
- UPD720201 + UPD720210 DUAL CONTROLLERS: The same Renesas dual-chip architecture used in servers and professional motherboards, with high-frequency ceramic and solid-state capacitors on every port.
- DRIVER-FREE ON WINDOWS AND LINUX: Recognised instantly on Windows 11/10/8, Windows Server 2012-2022 and most Linux distributions on Intel, AMD and ARM platforms, with drivers supplied for legacy Windows. Not compatible with Mac OS.
- CLEAN SELF-POWERED INSTALL: Draws power entirely from the PCIe x1 slot with no SATA connector or extra cables, and fits standard desktop towers with the standard-profile bracket. Not intended for slim cases.
PCI-SIG’s 2026 announcement describes the schedule and performance target. Its PCIe 8.0 member announcement outlines the standard’s objectives. The earlier version 0.3 announcement dates the preceding member draft to September 18, 2025.
Why PCI-SIG is targeting higher bandwidth
PCI-SIG names AI and machine learning, data centers, high-speed networking, edge computing, quantum computing, high-performance computing (HPC), automotive, and military/aerospace as intended markets or applications. These are areas the standard is being designed to serve; they are not proof that PCIe 8.0 systems are deployed or available today.

- 6-PORT SATA EXPANSION CARD: Adds 6 SATA III (6Gbps) drives to your desktop at once, turning one PCIe x4 slot into a 6-bay storage pool for unRAID, TrueNAS, ZFS, Proxmox or Windows Storage Spaces software RAID. Hardware RAID is not supported.
- 277MB/S ON EVERY PORT: PCIe 3.0 X2 upstream runs at 16GT/s, and each of the 6 SATA ports delivers up to 277MB/s, so large multi-drive transfers, media libraries and backup jobs finish fast with no bottleneck.
- NO DRIVER, WIDE COMPATIBILITY: Plug and play on Windows (except XP), Mac OS, Linux and NAS systems. Set SATA mode to AHCI in BIOS or UEFI before first install. This is a data storage HBA and does not boot an operating system.
- 6 BUILT-IN LED INDICATORS: A steady red LED means the drive is powered, a flashing LED means it is reading or writing, so you can check every SATA drive at a glance without opening the case.
- FITS X4/X8/X16 SLOTS, FULL KIT INCLUDED: Ships with 6 x SATA III cables (350mm/13.5in), a 1:5 SATA power splitter cable, and both a 12cm regular and an 8cm low-profile bracket for any PC or NAS case.
For AI systems, faster interconnects can help move data among processors, accelerators, memory, and networking hardware. But a link’s peak rate alone does not determine real-world performance. The final implementation and the rest of the system matter, and PCI-SIG has not published final PCIe 8.0 latency or power specifications in the cited public material.
What is known about compatibility, power, and connectors
PCI-SIG lists backward compatibility as an objective and says it is evaluating new connector technology. That does not settle the final connector design or every condition needed for older and newer components to work together. A compatibility objective should not be read as a guarantee that any PCIe 8.0 device will fit or operate in every existing system.

What the announcement means for buyers
There is no PCIe 8.0 retail device or product ship date established by these announcements. The practical takeaway is that PCI-SIG is advancing a draft standard with a high bandwidth target, while the final specification and hardware ecosystem remain in the future. If you are choosing a system now, do not treat PCIe 8.0 as a feature you can buy on the strength of this roadmap announcement. PCI-SIG’s specifications page lists its standards resources.
