PCI-SIG released PCI Express (PCIe) 7.0 version 1.0 to its members on June 11, 2025. It doubles the raw transfer rate of PCIe 6.x to 128 GT/s and specifies up to 512 GB/s of aggregate bidirectional bandwidth over an x16 link. The “optical twist” is a retimer-based link-extension approach that can include optical technologies in part of a link—not a change that makes the entire PCIe architecture optical. PCIe 8.0, meanwhile, remains a draft: its 256 GT/s and 1 TB/s x16 figures are objectives, not finalized specifications or product performance.

What PCIe 7.0’s release means

PCIe 7.0 version 1.0 became available to PCI-SIG members on June 11, 2025. The standards body’s specification index now lists Base Specification Revision 7.1, dated September 17, 2026, as the current approved base revision. That is a later revision in the PCIe 7.0 lineage; the 7.0 version 1.0 release remains the milestone that introduced the generation. PCI-SIG’s PCIe 7.0 release page and base specification index document those points.

The headline speed is 128.0 GT/s, twice PCIe 6.x’s 64 GT/s raw rate. PCI-SIG states up to 512.0 GB/s bidirectionally over x16. GT/s describes transfers per second; the GB/s figure is the aggregate bandwidth in both directions for the specified lane configuration. It is not a promise that an application or device will achieve that much usable payload throughput. Actual performance depends on the system and workload, and the specification figures are not independent product benchmarks. See the PCI-SIG PCIe 7.0 FAQ for the stated rate and bandwidth.

What the optical feature is—and is not

At higher signaling rates, keeping a reliable link over distance becomes more challenging. PCI-SIG’s Optical Aware Retimer engineering change notice (ECN) describes a link-extension implementation that is partly composed of optical technologies. A retimer sits in the link to support signal transmission over an extended reach; the approach allows electrical and optical portions to be mapped together rather than requiring the whole connection to use one medium.

GLOTRENDS 200mm PCIe 4.0 x16 GPU Riser Cable, 90 Degree Right Angle
  • 200MM FOR STANDARD MID-TOWERS – Long reach for vertical GPU mounts in standard mid-tower and ATX cases, with extra slack for routing behind the motherboard tray from a CPU-direct PCIe 4.0 x16 slot – enough margin for thicker coolers and radiator setups.
  • FULL PCIE 4.0 x16 BANDWIDTH – Delivers up to 32GB/s in a CPU-direct PCIe 4.0 x16 slot; backward compatible with PCIe 3.0 slots and GPUs at Gen3 speed. No drivers, no BIOS settings, no external power required.
  • SHIELDED FOR A STABLE SIGNAL – Every differential signal pair is individually foil-wrapped for EMI protection, built on 30AWG silver-plated copper with Teflon insulation, so 4K/8K output and sustained frame rates stay stable over the whole run.
  • CHECK YOUR HARDWARE FOR GEN4 SPEED – CPU: Intel 11th Gen / Ryzen 5000 or newer; GPU: GeForce RTX 40/30 or Radeon RX 7000/6000; slot: direct CPU-connected PCIe 4.0 x16. Older setups still work, just at PCIe 3.0 speed.
  • EASY INSTALL, LIFETIME SUPPORT – Slide-on installation with no drivers (hot swapping not supported). Ships in an anti-static bag – avoid touching the gold fingers. Backed by GLOTRENDS lifetime tech support and a length-selection guide.

PCI-SIG includes optical interconnection and reach across racks and pods among PCIe 7.0’s goals. It also describes multiplexing or mapping data across electrical and optical domains and targeting more compact implementations than electrical copper solutions. These are standards goals, not evidence of measured savings, a particular deployment, or an optical PCIe product being commercially available. The Optical Aware Retimer ECN is dated June 11, 2025, and is listed under PCIe Base Spec 6.3 in PCI-SIG’s index; it should not be mistaken for proof that every PCIe 7.0 connection is optical. Details are in the Optical Aware Retimer ECN and the PCIe 7.0 release announcement.

PCIe 7.0 and PCIe 8.0 compared

Specification Status as of October 4, 2026 Raw rate Stated x16 bidirectional bandwidth
PCIe 7.0 Version 1.0 released to members June 11, 2025; Base Specification Revision 7.1 is listed as current approved 128 GT/s Up to 512 GB/s
PCIe 8.0 Draft 0.5 available for member review from May 1, 2026; full release targeted for 2028 256 GT/s objective Up to 1.0 TB/s objective

The PCIe 8.0 numbers are draft objectives from PCI-SIG, not final guarantees. Its announcement says connector technology is under review and that latency, forward error correction (FEC), and reliability targets are still being confirmed. The draft also includes objectives for backward compatibility, bandwidth protocol enhancements, and additional power-reduction techniques. The organization says the full specification remains on track for 2028. Consult the PCIe 8.0 draft 0.5 announcement for the roadmap and qualifications.

What changes for devices and buyers now

A finalized specification does not mean that compatible consumer devices are immediately on sale. PCI-SIG anticipates preliminary PCIe 7.0 FYI testing in 2026, followed by an official compliance program. Its FAQ gives a general estimate of 12–18 months after a final specification release for products utilizing that specification; this is not a date for a named product or a guaranteed shipping schedule.

PCI-SIG positions PCIe 7.0 for data-intensive settings such as hyperscale data centers, high-performance computing, AI and machine learning, cloud, high-speed networking including 800G Ethernet, automotive, military and aerospace, and quantum computing. Those are target markets identified by the standards body, not confirmation that products in each category have adopted the specification. PCI-SIG’s FAQ describes PAM4 signaling and Flit-based encoding, improved power efficiency, and backward compatibility as part of the PCIe 7.0 context. For current adoption and compliance timing, see the PCI-SIG FAQ.

Why the distinction between specification and product matters

The 512 GB/s and 1 TB/s figures describe aggregate bidirectional bandwidth for x16, while the raw GT/s rates describe transfers per second. Neither figure alone predicts the throughput a particular storage device, accelerator, or workload will deliver. Likewise, a specification’s optical link-extension provision does not establish that a retail component uses optical retiming. For purchasing or system-design decisions, look for explicit support claims for the specific PCIe generation and configuration, plus applicable compliance information; do not infer PCIe 7.0 support from a generic SSD, GPU, adapter, or cable listing.
