Short answer: there is no standard storage size for a PC Game Pass game. Microsoft lists 150MB for the Xbox PC app, while each game’s installation requirement is different and must be checked on that title’s detail page. The bigger issue is platform: Microsoft documents PC Game Pass for Windows 10 or Windows 11 (version 22H2 or higher), whereas Steam Deck ships with SteamOS 3. A microSD card expands capacity, but it does not turn SteamOS into the supported Windows PC environment. If you plan to install Windows and keep games locally, a 512GB UHS-I microSD card is the practical default; choose 1TB for a large library. Streaming is a separate case because the game files are not stored locally.

Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked
256GB-class setup Occasional local installs Editorial planning tier; no official Microsoft capacity requirement Steam Deck expansion; local PC Game Pass installs require Windows Oct 2026
512GB UHS-I microSD card Most Windows-on-Deck libraries UHS-I; UHS-I Class 3 or better is supported by Valve Steam Deck expansion; Windows required for local PC Game Pass Oct 2026
1TB UHS-I microSD card Several large games kept installed UHS-I; capacity is planning guidance, not a Microsoft requirement Steam Deck expansion; Windows required for local PC Game Pass Oct 2026
Streaming-first setup Readers who do not keep PC Game Pass files locally Local game-file capacity is not the main constraint Streaming path; local PC Game Pass installation remains a Windows scenario Oct 2026

The table separates capacity advice from official requirements. Microsoft does not publish a single average installation size for PC Game Pass games, and Valve’s storage support does not change Microsoft’s operating-system requirement.

How much storage does a PC Game Pass game actually need?

The only useful answer is the requirement for the specific game and edition you intend to install. Microsoft’s PC Game Pass page lists 150MB in the system-requirements area for the Xbox PC app; that figure is for the app, not for a Game Pass game. Microsoft also states that system requirements vary by game, so an average number would be misleading.

Open the individual game’s detail page in the PC Game Pass/Xbox PC experience and use its installation requirement when planning space. Treat that number as the starting point for your capacity decision rather than assuming every title occupies the same amount. If you keep several games installed, add their listed requirements together and leave room for the Windows installation, the Xbox app, saves, updates and other software on the same volume.

Because no publisher-owned average is provided, “PC Game Pass needs X GB” is not a reliable statement. A 512GB or 1TB recommendation is a convenience choice for managing a library, not a specification imposed by Microsoft.

Can you install PC Game Pass games directly on a Steam Deck?

For a local installation, plan on a Windows-on-Deck setup. Microsoft says PC Game Pass can be played on a Windows PC and requires Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 22H2 or higher. Valve identifies SteamOS 3, an Arch-based Linux distribution, as the Steam Deck’s default operating system. Those statements establish the supported platform distinction: a normal SteamOS installation is not the same environment as Microsoft’s documented PC Game Pass target.

This does not prove that every community-created workaround is impossible, but it does mean you should not buy a card expecting it to make PC Game Pass a native SteamOS installation. Decide first whether you are willing to run a compatible Windows installation. Only then should you size storage for locally installed games.

What the microSD card changes

A card gives Windows (or SteamOS) another storage volume for files. It does not supply Windows, the Xbox PC app, a license, or compatibility with a particular title. If your plan is streaming rather than installing, the card is not the component that determines whether the session works; network and service compatibility become the separate questions.

Which Steam Deck storage size should you choose?

Choose capacity by the number of titles you want available without moving them, not by a fictional Game Pass average. The following tiers are practical planning guidance rather than Microsoft or Valve requirements.

256GB-class: occasional local installs

A 256GB-class setup can work when you install only a small number of games, remove titles after finishing them and keep free space under control. It leaves less flexibility for a Windows installation and other applications, so it suits a deliberate, rotating library rather than a “keep everything installed” approach.

512GB UHS-I: the balanced default

A 512GB UHS-I microSD card is the strongest general recommendation for readers who intend to run Windows and keep a useful local library. It adds substantial space without committing to the largest capacity, and it leaves room to manage multiple installations as individual game requirements vary. The 512GB figure is editorial guidance; Microsoft does not require it.

1TB UHS-I: for a larger local library

Choose 1TB when you expect several large games to remain installed at the same time or you dislike moving installations between volumes. It is a capacity preference, not evidence that PC Game Pass games have a standard 1TB-related requirement. Confirm each title’s own requirement before deciding whether even 1TB meets your particular library plan.

Streaming-first: storage is a secondary concern

If you stream instead of downloading game files, local game storage is not the main constraint. Keep this scenario separate from a Windows local-install plan: streaming avoids the same file-capacity pressure, but it does not establish that a SteamOS device is a supported Windows PC Game Pass environment for downloaded games.

What microSD cards does Steam Deck support?

Valve says Steam Deck cards must be formatted before use and supports any UHS-I Class 3 or better microSD card. Valve’s hardware information also says every Steam Deck model supports expanding storage with a microSD card, and games stored on a card appear in the library instantly.

The Deck’s expansion interface is UHS-I. Valve notes that UHS-II and UHS-III cards may work, but the Deck does not support their higher transfer speeds. Paying extra for a card solely to obtain UHS-II or UHS-III interface speed therefore does not deliver that advertised speed on this hardware.

Class and interface are different labels

“UHS-I” describes the interface the Deck can use; “Class 3” is the performance class Valve names in its support guidance. For a straightforward purchase, look for a genuine UHS-I card rated Class 3 or better and avoid assuming that a higher-interface label will make the Deck faster than its controller allows.

How should you plan a Windows-on-Deck Game Pass volume?

Use this order so a capacity purchase does not solve the wrong problem:

  1. Choose the platform path. Decide whether you will run Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher for local PC Game Pass, remain on SteamOS for supported Steam software, or stream instead of installing.
  2. List the games you actually expect to keep. Read each game’s installation requirement on its individual PC Game Pass detail page. Do not substitute the Xbox PC app’s 150MB figure.
  3. Add non-game space. Reserve capacity for Windows, the Xbox app, updates, saves and other programs sharing the same storage volume. The exact amount depends on your chosen Windows installation and software, so it cannot be reduced to a universal Game Pass number.
  4. Select the tier. Use 256GB-class capacity for a tightly managed rotation, 512GB for a balanced local library, or 1TB when avoiding frequent moves matters more than minimizing the purchase.
  5. Match the card to the Deck interface. Select UHS-I, Class 3 or better. Do not pay for UHS-II/III speed on the assumption that the Deck will use it.
  6. Format before copying or installing. Valve requires the card to be formatted for Deck use. Follow the Deck’s on-screen formatting flow, then confirm the card is visible before assigning it as a destination in your Windows setup.

The last step is a preparation requirement, not a guarantee that a particular Windows configuration or Game Pass title will work. Compatibility remains governed by the operating system, Microsoft’s app requirements and each game’s own requirements.

What are the common storage and compatibility mistakes?

  • Treating 150MB as a game size: it is the Xbox PC app figure, not a per-game installation allowance.
  • Assuming every Game Pass title fits the same footprint: Microsoft says requirements vary by game; check the title page.
  • Buying a card before deciding on Windows: extra capacity cannot replace the Windows 10/11 requirement for local PC Game Pass.
  • Calling a Windows install “native SteamOS Game Pass”: Steam Deck’s default OS and Microsoft’s documented PC environment are different.
  • Paying for unsupported interface speed: UHS-II and UHS-III cards may function, but the Deck does not support their higher transfer speeds.
  • Using the card’s full nominal capacity in your calculation: leave room for the operating system, apps and updates instead of planning to the last free gigabyte.

What should you buy for PC Game Pass on Steam Deck?

For most readers planning local Windows installations, buy a 512GB UHS-I Class 3 or better microSD card. It is the balanced capacity recommendation, while remaining within the interface Valve supports. Move to 1TB when your priority is keeping a larger set of games installed at once; choose a smaller setup only if you are comfortable rotating titles. If you intend to stream, decide that service and network path first rather than buying storage to solve a problem you will not have.

How we picked these capacity tiers

The tiers follow four facts: Microsoft’s per-game variability, the Windows requirement for PC Game Pass, Valve’s UHS-I expansion support and the practical difference between a rotating, balanced and large local library. They are planning guidance, not official minimums.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 150MB Xbox PC app figure include a game’s files?

No. That figure belongs to the app’s listed system requirements. A downloaded title has its own installation requirement, which Microsoft says can vary by game, so use the individual game’s detail page instead.

How can I estimate space if I alternate between several games?

Add the installation requirements for the titles you want available simultaneously, then reserve additional room for Windows, the Xbox app and updates. If that total leaves little working space, step up from the 512GB tier or plan to remove games more often.

Is a 512GB card an official Game Pass requirement?

No. Microsoft does not mandate 512GB or 1TB for PC Game Pass. Those capacities are practical choices for managing a local library on a Deck after you have chosen a Windows installation path.

Will a premium UHS-II card make Steam Deck transfers run at UHS-II speed?

No. Valve says UHS-II and UHS-III cards may work, but the Deck does not support their higher transfer speeds. A properly rated UHS-I card matches the interface the hardware is designed to use.
