Neither Patagonia nor The North Face is the better jacket brand for every use. Compare specific jackets by shell construction, insulation, activity, fit and care: for prolonged rain or wet snow, look for waterproof construction; for cool, drier conditions and greater freedom of movement, a soft shell may suit better. Choose insulation based on whether low weight or damp-weather performance matters more.
Start with the jacket’s job, not the logo
Each brand sells jackets designed for different conditions, so a brand-wide verdict would be misleading. Compare like with like: a waterproof shell against another waterproof shell, or an insulated parka against a similar parka. The relevant questions are how wet and cold it will be, how hard you will be moving, what you need to layer underneath, and how you will care for or repair the garment.
- For sustained rain, wet snow or strong wind: look for a waterproof membrane or back finish and protective construction. A durable water-repellent (DWR) treatment by itself is not a substitute.
- For cool, relatively dry conditions or active movement: a soft shell can offer more breathability and flexibility, with less protection in severe weather.
- For insulation: down is light and compressible when dry; synthetic insulation is a practical alternative when damp conditions are likely.
How to compare weather protection
Waterproof construction versus DWR
DWR is an exterior treatment that helps water bead on fabric. A waterproof membrane or back finish is the layer intended to stop water passing through. DWR performance can decline as dirt and oils accumulate, so a jacket that initially sheds water may need cleaning according to its care label. Patagonia explains the distinction in its waterproof-shell guide; The North Face likewise distinguishes water-repellent treatments from waterproof finishes in its US DWR guidance.
For extended exposure to rain or wet snow, verify that the particular model is described as waterproof and check its seam and hood details. Do not infer that protection from a brand name, a water-beading treatment, or a soft-shell label.

Hard shell or soft shell
Patagonia describes hard shells as outer layers for severe weather and soft shells as more breathable, flexible layers for less severe conditions. A hard shell generally prioritizes weather protection; a soft shell prioritizes comfort and movement when conditions are milder. The choice depends on expected precipitation and activity, not on which brand makes it.
Choose insulation for the conditions
Down and synthetic insulation are not interchangeable performance claims. Down offers strong warmth for its weight and packs down compactly, but performs best when kept dry. Synthetic insulation generally holds its structure and warmth better when damp. Check the exact jacket’s insulation specification rather than assuming every model from either company uses the same material.

A jacket can combine insulation with a weatherproof outer shell. Patagonia’s Men’s Jackson Glacier Parka is one example: the official listing describes a waterproof, breathable and windproof two-layer H2No shell made with recycled polyester and 700-fill-power recycled down. That is a specification for this parka, not a description of Patagonia’s entire range or evidence that it outperforms a comparable The North Face jacket.
Compare fit, layering and ownership details
Fit and layering
Think about what you will wear underneath. A shell may need room for a base layer and insulating midlayer; a standalone insulated jacket may fit differently. Check the fit notes, hood, cuffs and hem adjustment for each model. The available sources do not establish a matched sizing comparison between the brands, so do not assume their sizing is equivalent.

Care and repair
Follow the sewn-in care label for the specific garment. Patagonia’s August 20, 2026 care guide recommends washing waterproof garments with mild technical-gear detergent and drying on low heat to help restore water repellency and maintain performance. It explains that the membrane blocks liquid water while allowing vapor to escape, while DWR is an exterior finish. Patagonia also states that all new styles since Spring 2025 are made without intentionally added PFAS; that statement concerns Patagonia’s new styles and is not a comparison with The North Face.
The North Face’s US shell-care guidance notes that DWR performance can decline as soils accumulate and directs owners to the garment tag for cleaning instructions. Its UK product information recommends taking damaged waterproof garments to a retailer or outdoor-garment repair centre. These are region- and product-specific instructions, so confirm the current local repair and warranty terms for the model you are considering.

- Safely cleans technical synthetic outerwear without damaging DWR (waterproofing treatment). Household detergents leave behind water attracting residues.
- Easy to use wash-in technical cleaner that cleans effectively, restores water repellency and revives breathability by removing water attracting residues from the surface.
- Nikwax products are PFAS-free, water based, non-persistent, and contain no optical brighteners or added scent; machine wash safe

What the available comparison can—and cannot—establish
Official brand guidance supports comparing shell type, waterproof construction, insulation and care. It does not establish a controlled head-to-head test, a directly matched current model from each brand, or a comparable price basket. Accordingly, there is no sound basis here to declare one brand warmer, more waterproof, more durable or better value overall. Product prices, stock, seasonal ranges and repair terms can change; verify current details for the exact model and region before buying.
